Deerhoof

Long running experimental alt-rock band Deerhoof just released their latest opus, "Miracle-Level," today.  Quirky tracks for all.  Check out "Phase-Out All Remaining Non-Miracles by 2028" below and get the record here from Joyful Noise.

Daily Jam - Release

It's Friday.  It's late '90s moody Canadian alt-rock time.  Here's The Tea Party with "Release," our Daily Jam.

Rahill Featuring Beck

Rahill Jamalifard is a member of New York psych pop outfit Habibi.  In May she sets out on her own with new solo album "Flowers at Your Feet," but brings along a familiar voice for some backing vocals on new single "Fables" with Beck.  Check out the hazy bounce below and pre-order the record here from Big Dada.

Daily Jam - Blood on Our Hands

Here's a cool Death From Above 1979 song that i've always liked to start your day.  Listen to "Blood on Our Hands" below, our Daily Jam.

Softcult

Canadian duo Softcult make a mix of shoegaze, dreampop, and grunge, or as they call it, "music for mall goths."  New EP "See You in the Dark" is out now.  Get it here and listen to the moody, dreamy "Spoiled" below.

Bonus jam: here's a wonderful cover of Nirvana's "Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle" the duo recorded last year.

GHOST COP

Here's a couple of cool dark synth wave tracks from New York duo GHOST COP.  "A Shot in the Dark" sounds like something that would soundtrack a dystopian cyberpunk video game, while the excellently named "Using Witchcraft Against a Witch" would be right at home in an '80s horror movie.  Check them both out below and get them here for a dollar.

Troller

It's been 7 years since we last got a record from Austin darkwave band Troller.  I remember hearing a few years ago that they had signed to Relapse and have been patiently waiting for this one.  "Drain" will finally see release in May.  Happy day!  Get moody, check out "Out Back" below and pre-order the LP here.

Daily Jam - Sweet Thing

I don't have a favorite David Bowie album.  It's just too hard to decide.  Gun to my head though, it's very possible i'd choose "Diamond Dogs."  I think.  Anyway, here's a track from the 1974 contender.  Listen to "Sweet Thing" below, our Daily Jam.

Disintegration

Here's some gothy, synthy post punk from Cleveland's Disintegration.  The band's "Time Moves for Me" EP is out now.  Get it here from Feel It Records and listen to "Carry With You" below.

Daily Jam - Cool Scene

Wife already left for work, so i'm getting the boys ready and about to take them to school.  It's still dark outside.  Listening to The Dandy Warhols.  Here's "Cool Scene," our Daily Jam.

Molly Nilsson

Molly Nilsson's last album of nostalgia-laden synth pop was last year's "Extreme."  This month, the Berlin based artist released a couple of tracks recorded at the same time that were left off the record for one reason or another.  But you can hear them now.  Check out "Chario's Bride" below and get the "Extra" 7" here from Night School.

Daily Jam - Hideaway

The Olivia Tremor Control's "Black Foliage: Animation Music Vol. 1" is one of those albums i go back to again and again, going on now for almost 25 years.  It's the perfect blend of psychedelic pop and experimental weirdness.  Here's the sunshiny "Hideaway," our Daily Jam.

The Murlocs

Melbourne garage psych band The Murlocs are back in May with new album "Calm Ya Farm."  Check out the '70s country-fried sounds of new track "Initiative" below and pre-order the record here from ATO.

Daily Jam - Heroes and Villains

When i was a kid, i could never really get into The Beach Boys' later era stuff, preferring all the surf vibes from the early '60s.  That later stuff is my bread and butter now.  Here's a track from the troubled production "Smiley Smile."  Listen to "Heroes and Villains" below, our Daily Jam.

Sven Wunder

Moving into a little bit of a different direction before i head outside to do some yardwork.  Here's the latest from Sven Wunder.  Jazzy, groovy library jams for the masses...this time with harmonica.  Listen to "Harmonica And..." below and download it here (the 7" is already sold out).

Optic Nerve

Keeping with the noisy post punk this afternoon, this time around from Sydney, Australia's Optic Nerve.  New album "Angel Numbers" is out next month in all its punchy, frenetic glory on Urge Records.  Pre-order it here and listen to "Trap Door" below.

Chalk

Here's some noisy and moody post punk from UK band Chalk.  The group's new "Conditions" EP is out in May.  Pre-order it from them here and listen to the album opening "Asking" below.

Depeche Mode

Depeche Mode has long been one of my favorite bands, and it's a damn shame i've never been able to see them live before.  Hopefully that will change this year when they come to Austin in September.  Anyway, while i'm a big fan, i haven't really been able to connect with much of their output over the last 20 years.  Sure, a song here or there might make its mark, but with new album "Memento Mori," it feels like they're making the best music they've made since 1996's "Ultra."  Essentially a duo now since the passing of Andy Fletcher last year, his presence can still be felt in tribute.  It gives the whole thing a mix of sorrow and joy.  Listen to "My Cosmos Is Mine" below, download the album here (the band is now on Bandcamp), and look for physical copies wherever you buy physical media.

Swans

It's wild to think that experimental band Swans has been kicking it around in one incarnation or another for 40 years now.  And this summer, they're back again with their 16th album "The Beggar."  Check out the creeping and crawling "Paradise Is Mine" below and pre-order the album download here or the LP here from Young God Records.

Daily Jam - April Skies

I don't think i listen to The Jesus and Mary Chain enough, so let's listen to The Jesus and Mary Chain today.  Here's "April Skies" from the band's sophomore effort, our Daily Jam.

Liturgy

New York metal band Liturgy is back with new album "93696."  I always dig the band's blend of ferocity, noise, and all around experimentation they bring to every release.  Pick up the new "93696" LP here and check out the sprawling title track below.

Daily Jam - Obvious

Going back and listening to Jane's Addiction's first three albums, and holy moly do they still stand up.  I was too young when these records first dropped, but i bet in some ways they felt like the future.  Anyway, here's "Obvious" from "Ritual de lo Habitual," our Daily Jam.

JPEGMAFIA & Danny Brown

An upcoming release that escaped my attention last week during SXSW is the collaboration between two of the more unique voices in hip-hop, JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown.  This is most welcome news.  "Scaring the Hoes" drops tomorrow on streaming and digital platforms.  Pre-order the vinyl and a bunch of other merch here from the artists and watch the video for the weird and banging title track below.

King Khan

I love that among the prolific work of King Khan, aside from the psych rock, soul, garage rock, folk, and punk, he also experiments with weird, exotica-tinged, psychedelic jazz and lounge music.  Get new album "The Nature of Things" here from Ernest Jenning Record Co. and listen to the title track below.

Daily Jam - Make It Easy on Yourself

He passed away earlier this year, which devastated my mother-in-law, so let's listen to some Burt Bacharach today.  Check out "Make It Easy on Yourself" below, our Daily Jam.

BRIDE

Whether or not it's country-tinged shoegaze or shoegaze-tinged country, Portland artist BRIDE's new single "Cowgirl" is a dusty dream, playing like a late night lament after the honkytonk has closed.  Check it out below and download it here.

1981

Here's a little lo-fi punk from Finnish band 1981.  The band just dropped their new "What Should We Do with the Ones Who Don't Feel the Same?" 7" a few days ago.  Get it here and listen to the B-side, "A Prisoner of This World" below.

Daily Jam - We Trying to Stay Alive

It kind of feels a little dated now, but i still love Wyclef Jean's 1997 solo debut.  Here's "We Trying to Stay Alive," our Daily Jam.

Some SXSW '23 Pics

Well, i managed to catch a few shows last week during SXSW, though there were a few artists i really wanted to see that were just not meant to be (Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs just wasn't in the cards for me despite my best efforts).  I had fun, but i will say that the vibe was kind off from previous years, and not just because of our new COVID reality.  Comments have trickled out from various venues around town about how disorganized or outright flippant the festival was in regards to booking acts at official spaces.  Many clubs were left dark and empty in the evenings, and of those that had artists slotted to perform, many booked them themselves in an unofficial capacity.  This is all disheartening.  And i realize that as the tech side of the festival gets bigger and admittedly more profitable, attention to the music side is waning.  That's going to have to be remedied, lest SXSW just become another tech bro goober fest.

Anyhow, stepping off my soapbox now.  Here are a few pics from the week.  Highlights include Model/Actriz, Algiers, and Baby Rose.  Check 'em out below.
