It's not all indie jams and horror flicks around here. Football is also alive and well in the Heaven Is An Incubator household (lockouts be damned). And my Saints have scored a couple of good picks in the first round, nabbing DE Cameron Jordan from Cal at 24 and then trading with New England for the 28th pick to secure running back Mark Ingram from 'Bama. Should be good fits. Who Dat!

Lone Star Lowlands

Everyone should go ahead and do themselves a giant favor and buy Numero Group's "Lone Star Lowlands." It's a great compilation of really obscure music recorded in Beaumont, Texas back in the day. Everything (and i seriously mean everything) that Numero has ever put out is brilliant and should be owned by everyone, but as a Texan, i'm highlighting this entry. Check out this synopsis for God's sake:

"The songs themselves run the gamut; southern boogie rock, CSNY clones, British blues thunder, garage-psych hangovers, Morricone-esque supper club instrumentals, yacht rock, and what can only be described as Bobby McPherin fronting the Velvet Underground."

You know what sounds cooler than that? Nothing.

John Maus

Okay, i didn't want to like this guy at first, but the one-time Ariel Pink collaborator John Maus has gotten under my skin, and now i'm hooked. Check out the tune "Believer" below, a long lost, synth-driven anthem to some unmade John Hughes movie where everybody dies at the end. Sweet.

Ganglians "Still Living"

Sacramento's psych-folk-indie-rock weirdos Ganglians have a brand spanking new record out this summer form Lefse called "Still Living." These guys were responsible for one of my favorite albums of 2009, so high hopes for this next outing. You can pre-order and download the track "Jungle" right here. The first 50 people to pre-order get a copy on cassette tape too (whoo-hoo?), so there's that.

Crawling and echoing across some vast desert-scape, Weyes Blood's "The Outside Room," haunts the soul like Nico on a bender, scraping her nails along her tonsils, spattering blood into the ether, a riveting display of modern death-folk.

That's my super-pretentious way of saying this record is fucking awesome. Get it from Not Not Fun.

John Dies At The End

So, as i'm currently reading "John Dies At The End," by David Wong (editor of Cracked), i suppose i should probably voice my opinion about the novel. It's a shitload of fun. Zombies, ghosts, roach-monsters, a drug that opens up a transdimensional doorway, a car-driving dog, a race to stop an apocalypse brought on by a drunk, ancient god named Korrok, and plenty of smart-ass characters to boot. Check this one out before the movie's released (by Don (Phantasm/Bubba Ho-Tep) Coscarelli no less).

Xander Duell

It comes as no surprise that we listen to a lot of weird shit around here, and the newest obsession comes from New York's Xander Duell, and his "Experimental Tape No. 2 Vol. 1" album from Mexican Summer. I'm not even sure where to start with this one, so why don't i just let the record label spell it out instead:

"It’s going to take more than the space provided here to sum up the ideas and talent of NYC’s Xander Duell, who has fused decades’ worth of nuance into these thirteen songs. The implication in the title of this one is at least somewhat correct in that the experimental nature of Duell’s music rears its head in style and content atop songwriting that touches the emotional core without hesitation or regret. There is joy and sadness here, electronics and guitars, grandeur alongside the neon-lit sleaze. Calibrate your expectations appropriately on this one, but be prepared to have them shattered by this outsider work, in the spirit of Scott Walker’s numbered albums and the prime cut of ‘70s soft rock."

Birdemic: Shock and Terror

If you've been anxiously searching for a film that rivals "The Room" in sheer ineptitude and hilariousness, then look no further than "Birdemic: Shock and Terror." This piece of shit really feels like someone was trying their best to make the worst movie ever, and seriously, it's so bad, it feels purposeful. But then you watch some footage of director James Nguyen, and Goddamnit, it think he was trying to make a real movie. Mull over the checklist: stupid plot, inane subplots that go absolutely nowhere and pop up for no narrative reason whatsoever, horrible acting, horrible dialogue, horrible effects, annoyingly bad cinematography, bad, kitschy music, and on and on and on. Add some unnecessary political commentary to the mix, and you've got an awesome 90 minutes ahead of you.

All joking aside, this movie is pure crap, but enjoyable crap nonetheless. And, while it's not quite as awesomely horrible as "The Room," it's good to know that with the right attitude and a certain amount of chutzpah and drive, you too can birth your own stinking pile of art into the culture. Bon Appetite!

As i anxiously await Record Store Day this Saturday (what records am i going to miss out on because i'm not a crazy motherfucker who waits outside the store hours before opening?), i just came across a scheduled release i'm pretty excited for. San Franciscan garage rocker Ty Segall is set to release a 6-song EP of T. Rex covers called "Ty Rex." These are two things i love very much. Justice - Civilization

French elecro duo make their triumphant return tomorrow with the release of "Civilization" from Ed Banger Records. You might recognize the tune from an Adidas commercial, but product consumption aside, the song's pretty fun, sounding like the Justice we know with a tad of Daft Punk thrown in for good measure. Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi

The upcoming "Rome" project from Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi still has me very excited. The two pay homage to the music of the spaghetti westerns of the 1960's even recruiting a lot of the original musicians who worked with Morricone back in the day. Jack White and Norah Jones also make appearances. Check out the the collaboration with Norah Jones below called "Black."

Late to the party again on this wonderful LP from Anika, a "political journalist" moving between Berlin and Bristol when she met Portishead's Geoff Barrow, who then recruited the chanteuse to sing with his band Beak>. The result is the crazy mix of covers and original tunes sung in a Nico style voice backed by a kind of no wave/punk/funk/underground disco mutant hybrid. Groovy stuff if you're into awesomeness.
