Seattle based artist Thomas Meluch's Benoît Pioulard project has a new album headed our way in September, full of the beautiful ambient drone and hushed dreampop he's been perfecting over the last several years. "Same Time Next Year" crawls, like the layered background music to an intricate nature film. Listen below and get the Lignin Poise LP from Beacon Sound.

Ty Segall - Fried Shallots
It's Sunday. I feel bleh. The kids are crazy. It's a million degrees outside. Here's a new jam from Ty Segall from the surprise EP release "Fried Shallots." The album features a handful of tunes from the last couple of years and new song "Big Man." And all proceeds benefit the ACLU. Listen below and get the album here via Drag City.

Roosevelt
Synthy, German electronic artist Roosevelt offers up some self-made remixes of material from last year's " self-titled album, and they are smooth, neon-tinted jams for a warm summer evening. Listen to "Wait Up (Midnight Version)" below and download the "Midnight Versions" EP here via City Slang.

David West with Teardrops
Australian musician David West is a busy man, churning out releases with bands like Rat Columns and Rank/Xerox, and on his latest, the upcoming "Cherry on Willow" LP with Teardrops, he combs through spacey beats, drugged up and warped melodies, and dubby, chilled vocals. Or at least, that's what first single "Swan's Beat" would suggest. It's a hazy, dazed little number that feels like post punk pureed in a blender with heaps of molasses. What a great way to start a Friday. Listen below and get the record in September from Tough Love.

Alvvays - Dreams Tonite
Indie rock outfit Alvvays have a new album in the works, and they've just released a new jam from it called "Dreams Tonite." The tune finds the band traversing a much more dreampop vibe than on previous efforts, and they handle it stunningly. I'm all for this. Listen below and be on the lookout of the upcoming "Antisocialites" LP in September on Polyvinyl.

Magnatron 2.0
Stupid retro techno synth...i just can't help myself. The good folks over at NewRetroWave Records have bequeathed us a pretty bitchin' compilation of synthwave and retro techno artists called "Magnatron 2.0." Listen to "Dystopia" by ALEX below and grab the album in various formats here.

Tyler The Creator
Somehow, i managed to sleep on this for the last couple of weeks, but Tyler The Creator just released a new record called "Flower Boy," and from what i've heard so far, it's really damn good. Listen to synthy, underground R&B leaning "Boredom" below.

The Murlocs
It's storming outside, and i don't feel great, and electronic devices never work the way intended, and my dog is afraid, and i've got to go pick up my son from school in an hour. Anyway, here's a new jam from Australian garage psych rock band The Murlocs (an offshoot of King Gizzard), and a wonderfully claymated video. Watch "Snake in the Grass" below and get "Old Locomotive" from Flightless.

Stranger Things Season 2
Someday, i will try to make it to the annual nerd clusterfuck that is San Diego Comic Con, but until then, i'll just have to get my jollys watching all the trailers as they eek out on to Youtube like everyone else. And lo and behold, one of my favorite things last year, Stranger Things, gets a great looking peek at the upcoming season 2. Say what you will about the first season (there certainly is a lot to critique), but i still loved it. And i'm psyched for the continuing story of the denizens of Hawkins. Watch it below and nerd out with me.

Massachusetts cold wave duo Boy Harsher have a new record on the horizon. Watch the video for the pulsing and brooding "Motion" below and be on the lookout for the "Country Girl" EP in October on Ascetic House.

Paul Draper
Long defunct Britpop band Mansun were always one of my very favorite groups from that era, releasing three excellent albums and a never completed final LP. Lead singer Paul Draper is now releasing a solo album some 15 years later, and from the scope of first single "Things People Want," he hasn't missed a beat. Listen to the track below, and pre-order the upcoming "Spooky Action" LP here.
Psychic Temple
Here's a little countrified psych pop from California band Psychic Temple. Listen to "Paper Tiger" below, a dusty and AM ready little nugget and get the band's new album "IV" here via Joyful Noise.
Dent May - 90210
One of my very favorite things about quirky singer songwriter Dent May is the time years ago at SXSW when my friend (with no idea who he was) made like he was going to hit him in a crowd of festival goers, and May scurried away to then take the stage. Good times. But, as it turns out, his music is also consistently great. Listen to future singalong "90210" below and get the upcoming "Across the Multiverse" LP in August from Carpark.
Liars - Cred Woes
Holy shit, how did i not know there was new Liars album coming out next month? Easily one of my favorite artists since their inception 15 years ago, with a string of excellent, weird and noisy and challenging records under their belts, Liars are nothing if not strange and consistent. New album "TFCF" is due at the end of August on Mute, but in the meantime, listen to the beeping, rattling "Cred Woes" below.
Lee Ranaldo and Sharon Van Etten - New Thing
Former Sonic Youth guitarist Lee Ranaldo has a new solo record due in September called "Electric Trim." The album features Sharon Van Etten on a number of tracks and feels like a lovely mix of crunchy, dusty rock. Watch the video for "New Thing" below and get the album from Mute.
Andrew Hung
Andrew Hung of Fuck Buttons is all set to release his first full length solo album in October on Lex. First single "Say What You Want" does not sound anything like his previous output, but is still a captivating little nugget of sound, using the artist's vocals for the first time. Listen below and pre-order the "Realisationship" LP here.
The Lemon Twigs - Night Song
It looks like glammy rock duo The Lemon Twigs are back with some new music later this year. Listen to "Night Song" below and be on the lookout for the "Brothers of Destruction" EP in October on 4AD.
Nine Inch Nails - Less Than
I was in Washington for the last week, so i'm a little behind in regards to all the music released or teased in the last few days. Anyway, Nine Inch Nails have been all over the place like it's 1994 or something. Aside from an appearance on "Twin Peaks" and a transcendent live Bowie cover, NIN has a new EP, "ADD VIOLENCE," out today. Watch the video for the thumping "Less Than" below and get the album here.

Wolves in the Throne Room
New Wolves in the Throne Room coming our way in September. Listen to "Born from the Serpent's Eye" below and pre-order "Thrice Woven" from the band here. That is all.
Wednesday, July 19, 2017
Patience - White of an Eye
"White of an Eye," the latest from synth pop artist Patience, sounds a bit like every single sound from the 80's all smooshed together into bubbly pop nugget. And that's not a criticism by any means as the song is just infectious. Watch the video below and pre-order the 7" here from Night School.
Wednesday, July 12, 2017
Algiers - Cleveland
Soulful, industrial, gospel, post punk band Algiers released their latest album, "The Underside of Power" last month, but now they've got a biting and political new video about police brutality for the single "Cleveland." It's as angry and anguished as it should be, and should be considered required viewing. Watch below and get the record from Matador.
SQÜRL remixed by Anton Newcombe
Jim Jarmusch's music project SQÜRL is releasing their new record, "EP #260" later this month on Sacred Bones, but in the meantime, Brian Jonestown Massacre maniac Anton Newcombe has tackled remixing the band's "Gates of Ishtar." Newcombe's version crawls and oozes at nine and a half minutes long, sounding like some dark and menacing harbinger of encroaching doom. Add Tess Parks' beautiful vocals to the mix and you get something all at once haunting and transcendent. Listen below.

Zola Jesus - Soak
Here's another new song from Zola Jesus' upcoming new album "Okovi," sung from the perspective of a serial killer's victim. Guessing this new record's gonna be pretty dark. Listen to "Soak" below and get the album in September from Sacred Bones.

Here Lies Man
It's summertime and it's hot as crap here in central Texas, so some fuzzy, funky, Afrobeat psychedelia seems in order. All hail Here Lies Man. Listen to "Eyes of the Law" below and get the self-titled album here via RidingEasy Records.

Toro y Moi - Boo Boo
Toro y Moi has a new album, "Boo Boo," out today via Carpark, and it's a slick and hazy collection of synth-driven, chilled, and dreamy pop grooves. Stream the whole thing below, with accompanying video of Chaz Bundick (now going by Chaz Bear for some reason) hanging out and driving around the Bay Area. It's kind of relaxing.
House of Waxwork
Already a fantastic record label releasing absolutely beautiful reissues of film scores, the good folks over at Waxwork Records have really come upon one of the coolest ideas i've heard in a long time. The label has begun putting out a horror anthology comic book called "House of Waxwork," and each issue comes with a 7" soundtrack (if you will) of music composed for the stories within each comic. It's awesome, and it's out today. Go get it here right now. And stream the record below, featuring work from Rami Sharkey, Kevin Dredge, The Budapest Scoring Symphonic Orchestra, Douglas Pipes, and Creeper.
Also, dig on how much "The Die-rector" resembles David Lynch.

Amateur Childbirth
It's Thursday. Here's some stripped down, minimalist, apocalyptic folk rock for your listening pleasure. "Your Afterlife Is Cancelled," the latest upcoming album from Australian doom troubadour Amateur Childbirth looks at and channels all of the sadism and biblical nightmares of the gods into creeping, haunting dark folk. Listen to "All Doomed" below and pre-order the record here from Blackest Ever Black.

Gyan Rosling
So maybe the reversing of letters for a band name is kind of dumb and played out now, but who cares when the music is fun, right? Anyway, the long silent Retro Promenade finally issued a new release yesterday with the "Decadence" EP from Gyan Rosling. Dreamy, sometimes cheesy, synth pop for the masses. Hazaa! Listen to the title track below and grab the EP here.

Xander Harris - Beautiful Blues
Somatic Records here in Austin is a pretty cool little label that puts out kinds of synthy, droney, noisy goodies. (Full disclosure: i'm friends with one of the guys who runs the label.) Anyway, celebrating the fact that they've completely sold out of all of their first run cassette releases, the label is offering up some of their offerings for free download for a limited time. Right now, you can snag Xander Harris' new half hour opus "Beautiful Blues," and you should,as it's a sweeping, washing piece of sound, and perfect to cool out to later tonight after fireworks. Listen below.

Myrkur
Fuckin' A, we've got some new music from Myrkur headed our way in September. The gothy black metal chanteuse's latest, "Mareidt," even features fellow dark princess Chelsea Wolfe on a couple of tracks, so this should be a noisy and heavy candlelit affair to remember. Get your corpse paint and your black nail polish ready, and listen to "Maneblot" below, and be sure to get the record from Relapse.

Battery Point
Here's a little dreamy shoegaze love nugget from California 4-piece Battery Point. "Wish" sounds like something i'd have hung my heart on listening to it on late Sunday nights on "120 Minutes." Listen below and snag the band's "Star" EP here for a dollar.
