Daily Jam (Covers Week 2) - The Bewlay Brothers

Failure is one of my all time favorite bands, and i discovered them via a covers project called Replicants featuring the members of Failure, Lusk, and a Tool or two.  The 1995 album features covers of everyone from The Cars to T. Rex to Steely Dan, as well as a trippy and spaced out version of David Bowie's "The Bewlay Brothers," a track that was already pretty trippy and spaced out in its own right.  Check the cover tune out below, our Daily Jam.

Daily Jam (Covers Week 2) - Shake the Disease

I feel like you don't really see them anymore, but way back in this time called "the '90s," we'd get these tribute albums with a plethora of different artists all taking on a classic or fan favorite of some beloved act, be it Led Zeppelin, The Carpenters, Joy Division, or in today's case Depeche Mode.  1998's "For The Masses" featured everyone from Failure to The Cure to Deftones to Monster Magnet covering the long running British synth pop band, and for the most part it's pretty good.  One of the highlights was trip-hop band Hooverphonic's sleek and sexy take on "Shake the Disease."  Check it out below, our Daily Jam.

Aquarian Blood

Memphis punk band Aquarian Blood counts members of Ex-Cult and Nots among its lineup, and on their upcoming sophomore album "A Love that Leads to War," they're shifting gears from their more cacophonous past for something more eerie, earthy, and folky.  Check out the first taste, "There's a World," below and dig on those Americana and spectral folk vibes.  Then, pre-order here from Goner Records.

Daily Jam (Covers Week 2) - Take My Breath Away

Back in 2004, Kentucky band My Morning Jacket released two collections of early recordings, demos, covers, and more, "The Sandworm Cometh," and "Learning."  At the time, the band had made a name for themselves combining southern rock and Americana with reverb-drenched shoegaze, and these earlier recordings, raw and lo-fi, pushed that sound even further.  It really did sound like a bunch of guys recording music in an empty grain silo.  Anyway, the albums offered up an interesting assortment of covers, everything from Elton John to Pet Shop Boys to Erykah Badu.  Today, we're listening to the band's pretty faithful cover of Berlin's "Take My Breath Away," complete with sound ripped from "Top Gun" and some notes of Harold Faltermeyer's "Memories" at the end.  Check it out below, our Daily Jam.

Ghost Funk Orchestra

Maybe we shouldn't be looking back as often as we do, as a society, as artists, as culture architects, but damn it if there aren't scores of amazing sounds to uncover in the yesteryear.  New York's Ghost Funk Orchestra harvest a plethora of '60s aesthetic and then moosh it all together to wonderful effect, bits of psych rock, funk, soul, and jazz making something that should have been there all along.  Check out "Skin I'm In" below and get the amazing "A Song for Paul" LP here from Colemine Records.

WOW

Italian duo WOW make a kind of post punk blend of psychedelic European pop and garage rock.  It's wonderful, like smoking cigarettes on a cafe corner and people watching the busy bodies going about their day, a storm slowly moving in from the east.  Listen to "Occhi Di Serpente" below and get the "Come La Notte" LP here from Maple Death.

Have A Nice Life

What wonderful news to uncover this morning.  Connecticut band Have A Nice Life are readying their upcoming album "Sea of Worry" for November release, their first in over five years.  The post punk duo infuse elements of doom, shoegaze, and noisy drone into their sound, and the effect is sublime.  Listen to the album opening title track below and pre-order the record here from The Flenser.

Daily Jam (Covers Week 2) - Love Will Tear Us Apart

Gonna do another week of cover songs for our Daily Jam selections this last week of August.  First out the gate is this achingly beautiful version Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart" from Swans.  The group actually recorded a couple of different versions, but i've always been partial to this stripped down rendition featuring vocals from band member Jarboe.  Check it out below, our Daily Jam.

Thom Yorke & Flea

Ed Norton directs and stars in the upcoming "Motherless Brooklyn," a film set in 1950s New York with a jazzy score from Wynton Marsalis.  Also included on the soundtrack is a new song from Thom Yorke called "Daily Battles."  The track is a somber, jazz-ish tune featuring Yorke on vocals and piano with a horn arrangement from Flea.  Check it out below and pre-order the 7" here.

Chromatics - I Want to Be Alone

Are Chromatics ever going to release their long gestating "Dear Tommy" LP?  I don't know and neither do you.  But they just keep on teasing and releasing new songs.  Here's the latest, a haunting cover of folk artist Jackson C. Frank's "I Want to Be Alone."  Watch the video below.

Daily Jam - Plug in Baby

There was a time when i was a big fan of the band Muse.  What had started out as one of many Radiohead-lite acts churning out of the late '90s, the trio began fusing elements of glam rock, synth pop, Britpop, and more into something overtly dramatic.  And it worked.  Muse eventually morphed into self-parody, but 2001's "Origin of Symmetry" remains one of my favorites.  Check out the punchy "Plug in Baby" below, our Daily Jam.

It seems that anytime '80s synth pop band A Flock of Seagulls comes up in conversation somewhere, the focus always centers around the hair or the hit single "I Ran."  And that's a shame.  Because while their hair was certainly unique, and "I Ran" was a solid single, the focus really should be on how amazing of a track "Space Age Love Song" is.  That should be what people talk about when they talk about A Flock of Seagulls.  Listen to it below, our Daily Jam.

Kim Gordon - Sketch Artist

Kim Gordon has kept busy over the last several years since Sonic Youth's breakup (a breakup of which i am very much still upset about), and now she's got a new solo effort heading our way in October on Matador.  Check out the video for the noisy and eerie "Sketch Artist" below and pre-order the album here.

Also, it looks like the record is going to include Gordon's 2016 track "Murdered Out."  That song kicked ass, so its inclusion is a bonus.

Prince Rama

We've got a new EP out Brooklyn sister duo Prince Rama, which unfortunately appears to also be their final release as they are splitting up.  While their sound could certainly be an acquired taste (i have some friends who despised them), i loved their particular brand of weirdo electro-pop.  So they will be missed...at least at my house.  Check out "Love in Kontrol" below and get the "Rage In Peace" EP here from Carpark.

The Body remixed by Lingua Ignota

New music from experimental metal duo The Body is always good news around these parts, even if said new music comes in remix form.  The band has an album of remixes and reinterpretations heading our way in October, titled appropriately enough "Remixed."  Check out Lingua Ignota's fairly somber mix of "Hallow/Hollow" from 2016's "No One Deserves Happiness" below and pre-order the record here from Thrill Jockey.

Tempers

I forgot all about New York darkwave synth pop duo Tempers, their 2013 track "Strange Harvest" being one of my favorite songs from that year.  But they're still kicking, and have released a lot more music than i knew of.  And now they've got a new record, "Private Life," heading our way in October Dais.  Check out the first taste, "Capital Pains," below and download it here or pre-order the vinyl here.

Chris Bell's "I Am the Cosmos" is probably one of my favorite songs ever written and recorded, a heartbreaking little nugget of power pop that perfectly encapsulates all of the feelings that come and go with a breakup.  And now, Santa Barbara psych pop artist Eamon Fogarty has seen fit to cover it on his latest album "Blue Values."  He does a great job too, and it closes the whole thing out.  Listen below and get the record here from the artist.

Daily Jam - Nobody Knows

I am not a religious person...like at all.  I went to a Christian private school for a number of years during my youth, but i guess the daily chapel sessions never took.  That being said, i sure can dig on some gospel.  Hailing from Chicago's South Side, Pastor T.L. Barrett and the Youth For Christ Choir released the positively sublime "Like a Ship...(Without a Sail)" in 1971, a record full of soul-laden gospel tunes to capture even the most atheistic heart (like mine).  Check out their rendition of "Nobody Knows" below, our Daily Jam.  Can i get an Amen?!
