Daily Jam - Dark Entries

October starts tomorrow which means we've got a whole month of Halloween and horror themed coming your way.  Why not start things out a day early with a track from the dark and gloomy Bauhaus?  Here's "Dark Entries," our Daily Jam.

Big Blood

Back in February, Maine family band Big Blood released and excellent LP, "Do You Wanna Have a Skeleton Dream?" which i missed because a whole lot of stuff started happening right around that moment.  Anyway, you can never be too late to this kind of thing, so just appreciate the sounds you find when you finally find them.  The trio trades in psych folk, lo-fi reverb, and garage and bedroom pop, throwing in elements of dream pop, '60s girl group aesthetics, and more.  They've also got a back catalog of 20 albums or something, so i've certainly got some digging to do.  Anyway, the new record closes with a lovely cover of Franz Schubert's "Ave Maria."  Check it out below, download the album here from Dontrustheruin and grab the LP here from Feeding Tube.

Daily Jam - Deeper and Deeper

Sometimes when i look back on my 40+ years, i'm surprised by how many Madonna songs i'm into.  Go figure.  Anyway, you put Udo Kier in your music video, and it's just that much better.  Here's the disco-indebted "Deeper and Deeper," our Daily Jam.

Deerhoof - Love-Lore

Yesterday Deerhoof released a 5 track mash-up medley consisting of dozens of songs smooshed together into an awesome and chaotic Deerhoof EP.  The group takes bits and pieces from artists like The Velvet Underground, Ornette Coleman, The B-52's, and more.  And is that the "Knight Rider" theme in there?  Yes it is.  The whole thing kind of plays like a live band version of Girl Talk.  Check out "Love-Lore" in its entirety below and download it here (pay what you want).

Jesu

Justin K. Broadrick has a new Jesu album coming out at the end of the year.  Always good news.  Check out the crunchy echo of "When I Was Small" below and be on the lookout for the "Terminus" LP on Avalanche Recordings soon.  In the meantime, download the song here.

Daily Jam - Emanuelle in America Theme

Joe D'Amato's "Emanuelle in America" is...well...it's something else.  Fans of taboo Euro-sleaze should definitely check it out, but it's probably not for anybody else.  That being said, Nico Fidenco's score for the film is wonderful and should be listened to by everybody.  Check out the lush, exotic, and groovy theme below, our Daily Jam.

Anna von Hausswolff

Sweden's Anna von Hausswolff is back with a new album, this time around a completely instrumental affair centered around one instrument: a pipe organ.  "All Thoughts Fly" is the sound of the wilderness, sometimes tranquil, sometimes haunting, sometimes dramatic, and ultimately beautiful.  Check out the title track below and get the album here from Southern Lord.

Daily Jam (Shame Week) - Will You Still Love Me

Chicago.  Not the city.  The band.  I've been a sometimes closeted, sometimes open fan of the group for most of my life, particularly on the dreamy vocals of Peter Cetera.  But i also really dig on the post-Cetera output, especially the 1986's "18."  Cetera jumped ship to go solo, and the band brought in Jason Scheff for bass and vocals.  He did a pretty good Cetera impersonation i guess.  Anyway, he had the hits his first at bat and those hits ingrained themselves into my 7-year old brain.  Here's "Will You Still Love Me," our Daily Jam and conclusion to Shame Week.

The Unrighteous Brothers

Record Store Day has for obvious reasons been really different this year.  The event usually happens in April, but this year was pushed back to June, and then later pushed back again and divided over three weekends in August, September, and October.  And for the most part, it's been entirely online.  The second drop was yesterday, and while i missed out on the reissue of the '90s Black Sabbath tribute "Nativity in Black," i did score the debut 7" from The Unrighteous Brothers.  The duo consists of masked country music weirdo Orville Peck and East Texas singer-songwriter Paul Cauthen covering two all-time classics from The Righteous Brothers.  It's kind of a silly idea, but also totally awesome.  Check out both "Unchained Melody" and "You've Lost that Loving Feeling" below, and look for the record (online) in brick and mortar record stores everywhere.

Daily Jam (Shame Week) - MMMBop

I don't know if i actually like this song.  Of course i scoffed at it when it came out way back when, but in reflection, it's actually...fun?  A few years back when i was standing in line to get into Fun Fun Fun Fest (RIP), the song was playing over the speakers at the gate entrance, and every single indie kid and metal head and punk rocker was totally into it.  We owned it.  So, here's "MMMBop" by the brothers Hanson, our Daily Jam.

I often lament the fact that we never got a Bond theme written and recorded by Portishead, like it's just too perfect of a thing to exist anywhere outside of our minds and hearts.  On the flip side of that idea is that we were all also cheated out of a Spice Girls Bond theme.  It would have been perfection.  They were just so big and British, they could have provided the song for one of the stupider Brosnan outings.  What could have been.  What should have been.  Anyway, i'm just as horrified as the rest of you that i'm posting a Spice Girls song today, but i've secretly liked this song for 23 years.  So here's "Too Much," our Daily Jam.

L.A. Lungs

Here's some ominous and brooding music from the Pacific Northwest's experimental ambient duo L.A. Lungs.  "Some Beaches You Can't Remember" hums and drags, gentle and eerie sustained sound that feels like a whispered harkening, a growing chime for the end of things, or maybe an escape.  It will get under your skin if you let it.  The group's new "Magishishan!" album is out next week.  Get it here from Eiderdown Records.

Daily Jam (Shame Week) - It Must Have Been Love

I try to discourage the idea of guilty pleasures.  When you like something, just like it full on.  There should be no guilt.  But there can certainly be shame.  Sometimes we all just like some real embarrassing shit, and with that in mind, welcome to "Shame Week" where we'll have a week's worth of pop songs that can make me blush.  First up is the gooey '80s pop ballad "It Must Have Been Love" from Roxette, best known for its use in "Pretty Woman."  This is one of songs that i've liked since it came out, but always kept my mouth shut because i was supposed to be listening to hip-hop or something.  And hearing it can instantly transport me back to some of the happier moments of elementary school.  Check it out below, our Daily Jam.

Pure X

Having already released an excellent comeback album earlier this year, the good dudes in Austin's Pure X have another new album of music coming our way next month, this time in the form of a rarities collection.  "Rare Ecstasy: 2009-2019" spans the last decade back to when the band was still called Pure Ecstasy and includes this wistful, reverby cover of Willie Nelson's "One Day at a Time."  Check it out below and order the record here from Fire Talk.

Daily Jam - Cello

One thing that's always been weird to me was finding out that in the '90s, radio was better in Midland, Texas of all places than the major markets of the state, DFW, San Antonio, Houston, etc.  You could still argue over the quality of what was being played, music being subjective and all that, but the stations out west had yet to become completely homogenized back then.  They played stuff that seemingly wasn't getting circulation in the bigger cities, like this spacey and dramatic alt-rock number from Irish band Blink.  Listen to "Cello" below, our Daily Jam.

Sault

And just like that, we get a second phenomenal new record from the enigmatic Sault in 2020.  "Untitled (Rise)" continues the dancing, grooving mix of soul, psych, jazz, and funk started on "Untitled (Black Is)" from earlier this year.  Hell, it might even be groovier.  Check out the album opening "Strong" below and get the record here from Forever Living Originals.

 

Health

I really dig on LA's noisy, experimental synth band Health, and my favorite output from them is probably their continuing series of "Disco" remix albums.  The lastest, the upcoming "Disco 4: Part 1," is coming our way next month and features reworks and collaborations with artists like Perturbator, The Soft Moon, Youth Code, and more.  It's also got the brand spanking new tune "Cyberpunk 2.0.2.0."  Check it out below and pre-order the record here from Loma Vista Recordings.

Salem

With the release of that new mixtape earlier this week, it just seemed like new music was on the horizon from witch house stalwarts Salem.  And here it is.  Check out the syrupy new jam "Starfall" and its accompanying storm chasing video below and download/stream here.  Here's hoping a new record will be soon to follow.

Belarus synthy post punk band Molchat Doma wrote and recorded a new album amid the global pandemic and their nation's political an social strife, the upcoming "Monument" LP headed our way in November on Sacred Bones.  Those circumstances sound awfully familiar.  We should probably pay attention.  Check out "Ne Smeshno" below and pre-order here.

Thou Covers Alice In Chains

Alice In Chains' "Dirt" is one of those quintessential '90s albums that i can hardly imagine my early teen years without.  And in just over a week, the album gets a proper tribute in the form of "Dirt Redux," featuring a slew of metal bands each taking a track from the classic record.  Kicking the whole this off is Louisiana sludge band Thou with their ripping take on "Them Bones."  It rules.  Check it out below and pre-order the album here via Magnetic Records.

 

Salem - Stay Down Mixtape

It's been almost 10 years since witch house trio Salem released their "King Night" LP, and while they've put out occasional remixes and such, there hasn't been a whole lot of activity over the last decade.  That might be changing soon.  The group has been teasing new music for a few years, and now they've dropped a dark and trippy mixtape called "Stay Down" featuring reworks of a bunch of other artists' tracks.  It's cool.  Check it out below, and keep your eyes and ears open for new music hopefully sooner than later.

Ana Roxanne

In general these days, Fridays can be long and hard for me, splitting my work time between the office and home while also steeped in the new domestic norms of in-home schooling and afternoon grocery store visits.  Combined with state of things and the ever present threat of panic attack, by 6PM, when i finally get to unplug, i'm sometimes a frazzled, exhausted mess.  And so, i was very much pleased to discover "Because of a Flower," the upcoming release from minimalist LA artist Ana Roxanne.  Listening to the hushed and gentle melody of "Suite pour l'invisible" eased my nerves and calmed my soul even if just for its 7-minute runtime.  Check it out below, and pre-order the record here from Kranky.

Gorillaz and Robert Smith

Well, it looks like the "Song Machine" project that Gorillaz started earlier this year is going to be culminating into an album next month.  And along with that announcement, the group has released the latest track from the project, "Strange Timez," featuring Robert Smith.  I've got to admit, it's pretty cool hearing both Smith's and Albarn's voices together.  Check out the video below, and be on the lookout for physical release information hopefully sooner than later.
