Here's a spooky new track from Gazelle Twin, which makes sense seeing as it comes from the artist's and Max de Wardener's upcoming score for the horror film "The Power."  I was already anticipating the movie and now i'm stoked for the soundtrack too.  Check out "The Well" below and get it here from Invada.

The Astrologer

I feel like it would be remiss of me to not inform any and everyone of you who might take a gander at this blog that Craig Denney's absolutely bonkers and hard to see film "The Astrologer" has leaked its way to YouTube.  This is essential viewing if you're into outsider filmmaking or just bafflingly insane movies.  It's extraordinary.  A vanity film project (with ample financial backing no less) from a mysterious filmmaker full of epic ambitions and narrative ineptitude.  Denney directs and stars as a world famous astrologer...who is also a diamond smuggler...who is also a successful filmmaker and producer in a "Citizen Kane"-ish rise and fall that ends on a pretentious quote from "King Lear."  The film shoots for the stars and misses spectacularly.  Come for the jarring, smash cut editing that can feel like someone stuck in a reel from a completely different movie.  Stay for the scene entirely soundtracked by Procol Harum's "Grand Hotel" in which the lyrics literally describe what's happening on screen.  But whatever you do, make sure you set your eyes on this bizarro oddity.  Check out a trailer made by the Hellfire Video Club below.

Zombi

EXUM

Of all the music i thought i might write about today, i certainly didn't expect it to come from a former NFL defensive back, but here we are.  EXUM is the moniker of Antone Exum Jr., and the former safety mixes bits of hip-hop, electronic, synth pop, and R&B into grooving cohesion that harkens back to the sounds of early Toro Y Moi or Blood Orange.  Good stuff.  Check out the video for "Dark Kept Secret" below and pre-order the "Xardinal Coffee" LP here.

Renée Reed

I've been meaning to post about the debut album from Lafayette, Louisiana's Renée Reed for a few weeks now, but for some reason it just kept escaping me.  But no more.  The artist's self-titled record dropped last Friday on Keeled Scales, and it's as soothing and dreamy as it is haunting and mysterious, stripped down numbers that get under the skin and stay there.  Listen to "I Saw a Ghost" below and order the record here.

Enumclaw

Fuzzed out melodies on equipment that sounds like it's all been taped together.  These are the sounds of Tacoma band Enumclaw on their debut EP "Jimbo Demo," a short collection of sugary pop, grunge, and lo-fi lamentations thrown into a blender and served up right.  Check out the video for "Free Drop Billy" below and pre-order the album here (digitally) or here for the cassette from Youth Riot Records.

Xiu Xiu and Chelsea Wolfe Cover The Cure

I posted about the latest from Xiu Xiu a couple months back when "OH NO," a duets album, was announced.  Well, the album's out now, and it's a dark and tangled thing featuring vocals from artists like Grouper's Liz Harris, Liars' Angus Andrew, Sharon Van Etten, Twin Shadow, and more.  A track i was particularly excited to hear is a cover of The Cure's "One Hundred Years" featuring vocals by Chelsea Wolfe which you should most definitely listen to below.  The artists turn the angsty and anguished goth song into an angsty and anguished industrial hybrid of sorts.  It rules.  Check it out and grab the record here from Polyvinyl.

Kele Covers Bronski Beat

Bloc Party's Kele Okereke is all set to release his sophomore solo effort, "The Waves Pt. 1," in May, and one of the tracks is a stripped down, somber, and beautifully haunting cover of Bronski Beat's queer synthpop classic "Smalltown Boy."  I'm very curious to hear the rest of the record now.  Check out the song below and pre-order the album digitally here.

Conway & Big Ghost Ltd

"If It Bleeds It Can Be Killed," the latest mixtape from Buffalo rapper Conway The Machine and producer Big Ghost Ltd, dropped at the beginning of February and it somehow slept on it.  I'm not going to be too hard on myself as Texas was just a couple of days from freezing over, but man does this album slap.  It's good, old fashioned, down and dirty hip-hop.  Check out the Ransom and Rome Streetz assisted "Kill All Rats" below and download the mixtape here.

Floating Points, Pharoah Sanders, & The London Symphony Orchestra

The album "Promises" kept popping up all over the place for me yesterday.  A collaborative effort between electronic artist Floating Points, The London Symphony Orchestra, and legendary saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, i guess the universe was trying to tell me something.  So i checked it out and was floored, just a beautiful and sublime mix of orchestra, synthesizer, and sax.  At moments it feels like the soundtrack to some neon noir while at others it's stargazing.  Just a wonderful, immersive experience.  Listen to the album opening "Movement 1" below and get the record here from Luaka Bop.

Vatican Shadow

A lot of the dark and brooding ambient industrial music from Dominick Fernow's Vatican Shadow project uses thematic imagery from the US's decades of imperialism and warmongering.  It's in the tones.  It's in the moods.  It's in the cover art.  The artist's latest effort draws its inspiration from SR-71 Blackbird warplane to quite haunting effect.  Check out "Twilight Nail in Its Coffin" below and get the "SR-71 Blackbird Survivors" album here via Hospital Productions.

Black Midi

Back in the days of live concerts and such, frenetic post-punk band Black Midi were one of the bands that knocked my proverbial socks off during SXSW 2019.  And they're now prepping their sophomore album "Cavalcade" for release in May.  Check out the weird and wild "John L" below and pre-order the digital version here and the LP here via Rough Trade.

Qlowski

The summer months are bringing us new music from London band Qlowski, this time around a full-length LP called "Quale Futuro?"  The band fuses post-punk with elements of noise rock, psych, and bubblegum pop to create a dark, but sugary sound.  Check out "A Woman" below and pre-order the record here from Feel It Record if you're in North America and here from Maple Death Records for anywhere else.

Beachy Head

Beachy Head is the new project from Christian Savill of Slowdive and Monster Movie.  Over the last year of COVID, he wrote a bunch of new material that didn't feel like it fit with either group, so he recruited some help from members of bands like The Flaming Lips, Soft Calvary, Dreamend, and his Slowdive bandmate Rachel Goswell to record the new self-titled album.  Check out the dreamy "Destroy Us" below and pre-order the album here from Graveface.

Daily Jam - Blackened

I like them just fine, but i've never been the biggest Metallica fan.  That's not to say that they didn't get plenty of time in the rotation, as they were pretty inescapable when i was growing up.  And that's kind of where they stayed for me.  There are plenty of artists that i listened to heavily way back when that still get mad play now, but Metallica just kind of stayed in the past for me.  Which gives it an almost stronger nostalgia vibe when listening now.  Weird.  Anyway, here's "Blackened," our Daily Jam.

Bloodslide

Bloodslide is the trio of Greg Ahee (Protomartyr), Mike Wallace (Preoccupations), and AJ Lambert, the daughter of Nancy Sinatra.  Together, they make dark, kind of slinky, kind of heavy post punk.  Check out the seizure inducing video for "Pica" below and grab the track here.  Here's hoping an album is heading our way in the future.

Electric Youth and Pilotpriest

On the recommendation of my pal Shawn over at Everyday Is Halloween, i checked out Anthony Scott Burns' film "Come True" last night, and it was great, an atmospheric hour and 45 minutes of neon tint, synthesizers, and nightmare shadow people.  Definitely give it a view when you get a chance.  And the soundtrack by synth artists Electric Youth (whom you may remember from the "Drive" soundtrack) and Pilotpriest (whom you may know if you check out this blog often enough) is an absolute dream.  Check out "Modern Fears" below.  It's been in my head since watching the film last night, and maybe now it can be in yours too.  Then go over here to Waxwork Records to pre-order the vinyl.
