Fawn

Here's another new dreamy and poppy track from Fawn, the new project of former Chromatics member Nat Walker and former(?) Glass Candy member Ida No.  That both of those projects seemed to have reached their conclusions still makes me a little sad, but i'll gladly take new music from all the artists involved however they want to release it.  Check out "Mansions" below.  I'll keep you posted when an album materializes.

Daily Jam - Coming Down

I don't remember the whos or wheres or whens, but i am forever grateful for whoever it was, wherever it was, and whenever it was that introduced me to the '60s psych rock band The United States of America.  Here's "Coming Down," our Daily Jam.

Big K.R.I.T., Wiz Khalifa, Smoke DZA, & Girl Talk

Speaking of Girl Talk.  While the artist/DJ/producer no longer plays the mash-up game, he does have a new project coming out with Big K.R.I.T., Wiz Khalifa, and Smoke DZA with an album called "Full Court Press."  70's soul samples abound on the single "Put You On."  Check the video out below and look for the album next week on various streaming services.

Wu-Khruang

I know we're years past the "mash-up" phenomenon, but occasionally something still pops up that makes me turn my head and transform into that Leo DiCaprio in "Django Unchained" meme.  And really, you just can't go wrong mixing Wu-Tang Clan into anything, as has been demonstrated over and over again.  Anyway, the most recent comes from the Tom Caruana Remix Projects with "Wu-Khruang," this time pairing the legendary hip-hop group with the worldly psych and funk sounds of Houston's Khruangbin.  And it fucking works.  Check out "Pinky Ring" below, but then go here to listen to the whole thing and pay what you want for the download.

King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard

Just when i think i'm out, they pull me back in.  Recently i wrote about how the sheer amount of music released by Australian psych outfit King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard had become daunting that i wasn't keeping up with them the way i used to.  That's still true, but now they've piqued my interest with both of the new songs released from their upcoming "Ominum Gatherum" LP, which looks like it's going to be absolutely immense by the way.  I'm sold.  I'm in.  Here we go again.  Listen to "Magenta Mountain" below and pre-order the download here from the band.  If history serves, there will be a dozen different versions of the vinyl available from various distributors.

Angel Olsen

I was not expecting to hear new music from Angel Olsen this morning, but i'm all the better for it, as are we all.  New track "All the Good Times" has some wonderful, old school country vibes working for it, the kind of thing you slow dance in a honkytonk to.  Check out the video below and pre-order the upcoming new album "Big Time" here from Jagjaguwar.

White Flowers

Erang

French artist Erang is one of the originators of the dungeon synth sound that's been in various corners of the underground this last decade, and he's just released an epic new collection of music entitled "Land of the Five Seasons" released in 5 parts.  Beginning with "A Season of Frost," and moving on with "A Season of Leaves," "A Season of Sand," "A Season of Bloom," and finally "A Season of Magic," the project meshes dungeon synth with elements of black metal, synthwave, electronica, drone, and more to essentially create and soundtrack a whole world.  It's pretty cool stuff.  Listen to "The Absolute End of Everything Human" from "A Season of Magic" below and download everything here.

Crime of Passing

There's a burgeoning post punk scene happening in Cincinnati right now that's making me want to give the city a visit and explore, even with the spaghetti noodles in chili thing they've got going on there.  Anyway, the 5-piece band Crime of Passing have a cold and raucous sound that feels like it comes straight from the life blood of the music we've adored for decades now.  Check out "Tender Fixation" below and pre-order the upcoming self-titled album here from Feel It Records.

Marissa Nadler Covers David Lynch

To celebrate 15(!) years of releasing excellent music, Sacred Bones is set to release a new compilation in May called "Todo Muere SBXV" which consists of a slew of its artists covering one another's songs.  I've got to admit that i'm very interested to hear Thou, Emma Ruth Rundle, and Mizmor take on Zola Jesus's "Night."  But in the meanwhile, i'll just let Marissa Nadler's gorgeous take on David Lynch's "Cold Wind Blowin'" tide me over until then.  Check it out below and pre-order the compilation here.

Kelly Lee Owens

The wonderful UK artist Kelly Lee Owens is back next month with her third full-length album, "LP.8."  Her sophomore effort, "Inner Song," was positively divine, and she has described the sound of the new record as a combination of Throbbing Gristle and Enya which is a sound i think we can all get behind.  Check out "Olga" below and pre-order the record here from Smalltown Supersound.

HARESS

UK band HARESS make a kind of psych and drone folk that sounds like it should be played in the forests and hills of England somewhere, conjuring old magic and old pagan gods.  That's something i can certainly get behind.  The band's "Ghosts" LP drops in May.  Get it here from Wrong Speed Records and listen to the sprawling, meditative "Litres into Metres / Susurrus" below.

King Dude & Der Blutharsch and the Infinite Church of the Leading Hand

After releasing an EP last month of covers from the 1940s, dark folk and death-rockabilly troubadour King Dude has more new music heading our way next month, this time in collaboration with Austrian artist Der Blutharsch and The Infinite Church of the Leading Hand.  Given its creators, "Black Rider on the Storm" is appropriately dark and gloomy, a goth-tinged Americana dirge.  Check the track out below and pre-order the album of same name here.

40 Days Without Water

RIP Taylor Hawkins

Woke up this morning to the awful news that Taylor Hawkins has passed away.  Best known as the drummer for the Foo Fighters, Hawkins always carried an affable aura that made him seem like the most fun guy in the room.  He was a damn good drummer too.  Below, listen to his version of Dennis Wilson's "Holy Man," a track left incomplete by Wilson upon his death, but that was finished by Hawkins in 2008.  It's wonderful.  RIP Taylor Hawkins.

Alison Cotton

Wah Together

I came across another supergroup today, this time around consisting of a bunch of artists from the '00s New York scene.  Enter Wah Together.  The band includes members or LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture, and Longwave, and their sound is a kind of noisy and catchy brand of post punk.  Check out "Closer We Get" below, download the "Let's Wah Together" LP here from DedStrange, and order the vinyl here.

Cosmo Vitelli

Here's some weird and experimental electronic pop from Berlin artist Cosmo Vitelli.  The entirety of new album "Medhead" feels like some kind of deranged fever dream brought on by a night that went on for way too long.  Chemicals replacing your bloodstream.  Fog replacing you consciousness.  But something sinister feels like it's just out of your periphery.  Check out "High Blood Pressure" below and download the album here from I'm A Cliche (the vinyl is already gone).

Mary Lattimore & Paul Sukeena

As the last two years have trudged on, like most people i've had my good days and my bad days.  Turns out it can be difficult living through a global spanning event, particularly one that's left millions dead and laid bare just how ineffective and horrible most of our systems are.  I've listened to a lot of music during this time, and every so often, i'll stumble across something that just sounds how i feel.  And today, that's "Altar of Tammy" by Mary Lattimore and Paul Sukeena.  The track is stark and desolate, somber and fragile, a simmering piece of ambient music that speaks to my soul.  I'm kind of floored right now.  Anyway, definitely give it a listen below and pre-order the upcoming "West Kensington" LP here from Three Lobed Recordings.

Sound of Ceres

A decade back or so, i remember getting into a band called Candy Claws who made a kind of dreamy, shoegaze-tinged psych pop.  They dropped off my radar years ago, but it's members, Ryan and K Hover, still make music together, now as Sound of Ceres.  There's still plenty of dreamy psych going around, but with an added, almost kosmische-tinged and cinematic flare.  Check out "Arm of Golden Flame" below and pre-order the upcoming "Emerald Sea" LP here from Joyful Noise.

David Nance / Pearl Lovejoy Boyd / James Schroeder

Here's some raw and lo-fi Americana from Omaha artist David Nance with some help from fellow artists Pearl Lovejoy Boyd and James Schroeder.  "Ash Wednesday" was recorded in the artist's back yard and then released two days later.  Check out the dusty country of "Poison" below and download the whole thing here from Western Records.

Daily Jam - Makebelieve

Prick was the kinda odd industrial project of Kevin McMahon, the former front man of new wave act Lucky Pierre.  Lucky Pierre's claim to fame was probably its inclusion of Trent Reznor as a member at one point in the '80s.  McMahon and Reznor remained friends which eventually led to Prick's debut, self-titled album being released on Reznor's Nothing Records.  The album flirted with success based on the single "Animal," which had all the hallmarks of industrial pop at the time, but i think the record as a whole was ultimately too weird for the mainstream.  I loved it.  Here's the album's closing track "Makebelieve," our Daily Jam.

Zola Jesus

The hints have been dropping for weeks, and now it's official.  We're getting new music from Zola Jesus in May.  Check out the video for the icy and tribal new single "Lost" below and pre-order "ARKHON" here from Sacred Bones.

Daily Jam - The Center of The World

There was a time 20 years ago when i was the most devoted of Bright Eyes fans.  Like most things, that's changed, my taste in music ebbing and flowing with whatever kind of niche sound feels most exciting at any given moment.  But all these years later, and i still adore that era of the band, "Fevers and Mirrors" and "Lifted..." in particular.  And going back and listening to them now is like a big ol' nostalgia bomb.  Here's "The Center of The World," our Daily Jam.

Danny Elfman & Trent Reznor

Film score composer and former Oingo Boinger Danny Elfman has teamed with fellow film score composer and Nine Inch Nails front man Trent Reznor for a new single called "Native Intelligence."  This follows the duo's collaboration "True" from last year.  Elfman has a new record heading our way this summer, and i can only assume this is not the last time these two will meet.  Check out the track below and get it here from Anti- Records.

King Hannah

It wasn't like years past, but how could it have been really?  Still, SXSW managed to run smoothly for all intents and purposes, and while i didn't take the week off to immerse myself in the experience like i used to, i did manage to catch a few hours here and there and saw some wonderful artists.  One of those artists was Liverpool alt-rock act King Hannah.  The band has a classic and timeless sound and great songwriting chops.  Check out "It's Me and You, Kid" below and get the "I'm Not Sorry, I Was Just Being Me" LP here from City Slang.

By 1998, Britpop was pretty much burning out, Pulp's "This Is Hardcore" being its hungover eulogy.  But a couple of really great albums still managed to pop up here and there in the ensuing years.  One of those is melancholy and string-laden "The Good Will Out" from Embrace.  Sure, it's a little maudlin at times, but those songs sure are pretty.  Here's "My Weakness Is None of Your Business," our Daily Jam.

Friday Horror Trailer - Subspecies

TEKE::TEKE

So, the last few days, i've managed to pop my head into a couple of SXSW day parties while on lunch breaks, and i've caught some cool stuff, one of which is the 7-member Montreal psych rock band TEKE::TEKE.  The band fuses Japanese psych rock with surf rock, punk, and more, all with a fun and cinematic flair.  A lot of their stuff feels like it would fit in perfectly on the soundtrack to some '60s spy or crime flick set in Japan.  This is very much my shit.  Check out the cool and looming "Kizashi" below from last year's "Shirushi" LP and get the record here from Kill Rock Stars.  Also, if given the opportunity, be sure to catch these guys and girls live.

Daily Jam - Darkest Light
