GHOST COP

Here's a couple of cool dark synth wave tracks from New York duo GHOST COP.  "A Shot in the Dark" sounds like something that would soundtrack a dystopian cyberpunk video game, while the excellently named "Using Witchcraft Against a Witch" would be right at home in an '80s horror movie.  Check them both out below and get them here for a dollar.

Troller

It's been 7 years since we last got a record from Austin darkwave band Troller.  I remember hearing a few years ago that they had signed to Relapse and have been patiently waiting for this one.  "Drain" will finally see release in May.  Happy day!  Get moody, check out "Out Back" below and pre-order the LP here.

Molly Nilsson

Depeche Mode

Depeche Mode has long been one of my favorite bands, and it's a damn shame i've never been able to see them live before.  Hopefully that will change this year when they come to Austin in September.  Anyway, while i'm a big fan, i haven't really been able to connect with much of their output over the last 20 years.  Sure, a song here or there might make its mark, but with new album "Memento Mori," it feels like they're making the best music they've made since 1996's "Ultra."  Essentially a duo now since the passing of Andy Fletcher last year, his presence can still be felt in tribute.  It gives the whole thing a mix of sorrow and joy.  Listen to "My Cosmos Is Mine" below, download the album here (the band is now on Bandcamp), and look for physical copies wherever you buy physical media.

Swans

It's wild to think that experimental band Swans has been kicking it around in one incarnation or another for 40 years now.  And this summer, they're back again with their 16th album "The Beggar."  Check out the creeping and crawling "Paradise Is Mine" below and pre-order the album download here or the LP here from Young God Records.

An upcoming release that escaped my attention last week during SXSW is the collaboration between two of the more unique voices in hip-hop, JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown.  This is most welcome news.  "Scaring the Hoes" drops tomorrow on streaming and digital platforms.  Pre-order the vinyl and a bunch of other merch here from the artists and watch the video for the weird and banging title track below.

King Khan

I love that among the prolific work of King Khan, aside from the psych rock, soul, garage rock, folk, and punk, he also experiments with weird, exotica-tinged, psychedelic jazz and lounge music.  Get new album "The Nature of Things" here from Ernest Jenning Record Co. and listen to the title track below.

Some SXSW '23 Pics

Well, i managed to catch a few shows last week during SXSW, though there were a few artists i really wanted to see that were just not meant to be (Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs just wasn't in the cards for me despite my best efforts).  I had fun, but i will say that the vibe was kind off from previous years, and not just because of our new COVID reality.  Comments have trickled out from various venues around town about how disorganized or outright flippant the festival was in regards to booking acts at official spaces.  Many clubs were left dark and empty in the evenings, and of those that had artists slotted to perform, many booked them themselves in an unofficial capacity.  This is all disheartening.  And i realize that as the tech side of the festival gets bigger and admittedly more profitable, attention to the music side is waning.  That's going to have to be remedied, lest SXSW just become another tech bro goober fest.
