Daily Jam - Life Is Cheap

If not for Kurt Cobain, who knows if i ever would have checked out bands like The Vaselines, Daniel Johnston, or Flipper.  That dude's recommendations really opened me up to a whole lot of old, great stuff that would have missed otherwise.  Anyway, here's Flipper with "Life Is Cheap."  Check it out below, our Daily Jam.

Blackwater Holylight

Portland's Blackwater Holylight make a kind of shoegaze-tinged stoner rock (stoner-gaze?) that plays simultaneously like a punch to the eardrums and an ethereal haze.  Heavy riffs and daydreams.  The band's new album "Not Here Not Gone" dropped today.  Grab the LP here from Suicide Squeeze and listen to "Bodies" below.

Daily Jam - Innocent Eye, Crystal See

Here is some wonderfully soothing and epic music from American violist and composer Eyvind Kang.  "Innocent Eye, Crystal See" comes from the 2003 album "Virginal Coordinates," a beautiful collection of songs recorded live in Italy in 2000.  Listen carefully and you'll recognize Mike Patton (Mr. Bungle, Faith No More, etc.) providing the vocals.  Check it out below, our Daily Jam.

Daily Jam - Hurt

I'm not one of those people that thinks some artist was born to sing some other artist's song or whatever nonsense.  I just like a good cover, something an artist can make their own while still giving a nod to the original.  Johnny Cash's take on Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt" is one of those.  Listen below, our Daily Jam.

Sprints Cover Le Tigre

I'm a few minutes out from a company-wide Zoom meeting (ugh!), so let me leave you with a raucous and propulsive new post punk jam from Irish band Sprints.  Dig on their fun cover of Le Tigre's "Deceptacon" below and download it here from Sub Pop.

Daily Jam - It's Taking So Long

20 years ago, i discovered a couple of excellent compilation CD's put together by producer and record label head Andy Votel, the seminal "Folk Is Not a Four Letter Word" and "Prog Is Not a Four Letter Word."  The albums consisted of rare and forgotten tracks from across the globe, many of which were discovered by the producer while crate digging.  I love them both dearly.  Here's a track from the former.  Listen to California folk artist Kathy Smith's 1971 track "It's Taking So Long" below, our Daily Jam.

Main Era

Boston band Main Era somehow manage to melt together every alternative rock subgenre from the last 40 years into one on their latest release, "IV of Wands."  It's all there: grunge, shoegaze, post punk, post rock, slowcore, emo, screamo, math rock, etc., etc., etc.  I believe i just found what i'll be jamming for the rest of the day.  Check out "Double Dragon" below and snag a copy of the album on cassette or CD here from Disposable America.

Shapes Like People

UK husband and wife duo Shapes Like People are set to release a new album of shoegaze and jangle-tinged dreampop with the upcoming "Under the Rainbow."  The record has an old school college radio vibe to it that gives me all the warm fuzzies.  Listen to "Find Me There" below and pre-order the LP here from the band.

Daily Jam - Roland

Interpol's debut album "Turn on the Bright Lights" is one of those records that always astounds me as to how old it currently is.  Like right now, it came out almost 24 years ago.  Holy shit!  Anyway, i still think it's an outstanding album start to finish.  Here's a track from it.  Listen to "Roland" below, our Daily Jam.

Daily Jam - Heaven

It's freezing weather here in Central Texas for the next 48 hours or so, so i'm at home, bundled up, drinking coffee, watching college basketball, and pretty much doing a million other things to briefly distract myself from the state of things.  Here's some music by The Psychedelic Furs to further the distraction.  Listen to "Heaven" below, our Daily Jam.

TVAM

Here's some cool new music from Manchester band TVAM.  "Powder Blue" feels like a breezy mix of darkwave synth pop, shoegaze, and industrial alt-rock with some hints of gothic death rock.  Good stuff.  Listen to the track below and pre-order the band's upcoming "Ruins" LP here from Invada.

Daily Jam - Mr. November

It's probably not a popular opinion, by i think, that for the most part, the music of indie rock darlings The National is unbearably boring.  That being said, they do have a couple of tracks that manage to get me to change my mind.  Here's one of those non-boring ones.  Listen to "Mr. November" below, our Daily Jam.

Magic Castles

Yesterday i posted some great and angry new hardcore punk out of Minneapolis.  Today, i'm posting something a little more sweeping and dreamy for those days when the nazis are finally all gone.  Check out "Abandoned Mansions" from psych pop band Magic Castles below and pre-order their upcoming new album "Realized" here from Fuzz Club Records.

Daily Jam - The Aeroplane Flies High (Turns Left, Looks Right)

I've probably said it before, but i'm not really that big on Smashing Pumpkins and never have been.  There's also something about Billy Corgan that makes me want to punch him the face...continuously.  That being said, there are still plenty of songs by the band that i have an affinity for.  One of those is an excellent B-side from the "Mellon Collie" era, the practically oozing "The Aeroplane Flies High (Turns Left, Looks Right."  Listen below, our Daily Jam.

Giallo

There's a lot of horrible shit going on in Minneapolis and the surrounding area right now.  It's only right that some appropriately pissed off music is coming out of the city as well.  Check out the latest from hardcore punk band Giallo from their upcoming new album "Tenebrarum."  Listen to "Sleepwalking" below and pre-order the record here from the Convulse Records.

Daily Jam - Letom Redrum

French electronic duo Principles of Geometry's debut album finally got a vinyl release late last year.  Here's hoping their sophomore effort "Lazare" gets the same.  Here's a very Carpenter-esque track from that second record.  Listen to "Letom Redrum" below, our Daily Jam.

The Cataract Pools

The sources from which i learn about or hear new music are vast and varied, and one of them is from this cat on Bluesky who seems to sniff out great shoegaze like some kind of reverb sensitive bloodhound.  And so i'm spending a few minutes of my Sunday listening to the dreamy, ethereal sounds of St. Petersburg, Florida artist The Cataract Pools and the lush new track "Mirror of Truth."  Wonderful stuff.  Check it out below and download it here from the artist.

The Giraffe Told Me in My Dream

The wonderful and excellent named Taiwanese shoegaze band The Giraffe Told Me in My Dream just dropped a gorgeous new track yesterday with "散步."  The song, whose title translates to "Stroll," sounds like a mix between My Bloody Valentine and something like This Mortal Coil, the combination of layered, reverbed guitars and dreamy synths playing together like symphonic heaven to the ears.  Dig on the track below and download it here from the band.

Daily Jam - #3

In this humble blogger's opinion, there may not be a better Sunday morning album than Aphex Twin's "Selected Ambient Works Volume II," with the untitled track "#3" in particular giving my mind, body, an soul a certain feeling of Zen.  Listen to the track below, our Daily Jam.

BE/HOLD

Last year, Brooklyn electronic artist BE/HOLD released the excellent "Where They Landed," a faux soundtrack for a pretend movie about aliens landing the Appalachians.  It seems the artist also recorded an actual soundtrack for something called "Voidstream."  Read about that project here, listen to horror synths of "Neither" below, and download the "Voidstream" soundtrack here from the artist.

Daily Jam - Home Sweet Home

Some days it's hard to write this blog.  There's just too much awful shit going on out there to feel anything good about writing an inconsequential music blog.  But then i think that one of the reasons i compulsively post stuff here is the same reason i listen to music the way i do...to escape the harsh realities of life for just a brief moment or two.  So i'll keep posting even as skies continue to darken, hoping for that silver lining to eventually break through the storm clouds.  Here's some escapism, for me at least as the track takes me back to being a kid, from Motley Crue.  Listen to "Home Sweet Home" below, our Daily Jam.

And in the event i haven't said it enough: Fuck ICE!

SECA

Moderator

Greek artist Moderator trades in the sounds of trip-hop, electronic, and more on upcoming new album "Silent Cinema."  True to the title, the LP carries a cinematic aesthetic that can be heard in all its noir-ish glory on album opener "Dark Art."  Check it out below and pre-order the album here from Melting Records.
