Popping up during the 60's garage/psych revival of the 1980's, LA's The Pandoras were the girl group of the "Paisley Underground" scene. The band combined elements of surf rock and garage noise to create riotous, go-go vibed music. Take a listen to the instrumental "Haunted Beach Party."
Band leader and singer Paula Pierce sang in guttural and hoarse voice, screeching in a way that would later become synonymous with the riot grrl acts of the 90's. Listen to "James" below.
The band's first album, "It's About Time," came out in 1984 on Bomp! Records, and the girls continued to make music until the untimely death of Ms. Pierce in 1991.
Considering our current garage rock revival, this record is a great fit. Here's one more, "Want Need Love."
