Daily Jam - Lindsay Brohan

Recycling old, unwanted sounds, and chopping and layering them over a pulsing beat, a warbled and neo-futurist audio clip slowly degrading as the technology fades away, or as we dance upon it. Sweet island melodies bent and mixed beyond recognition into something resembling the neon tint of an 80’s nightclub, but with a melancholy undercurrent keeping things from getting too garish. Constructing their jams from found sounds and with an ear for infectious synth pop, electronic duo Javelin set their own bar ridiculously high with the first track from their 2009 self-titled EP, the excellently named “Lindsay Brohan.”

The song retains a certain retro pastiche throughout its four-minute duration, but with splashes of sampled trick cyclist dude dialog and interviews popping up here and there that create an absurd and almost surreal vibe. And oh, is it danceable. Sounding like it was assembled from trash records you would find in the dollar bins and yard sales across the country and then streamlined into high-end laptops and digital recorders, “Lindsay Brohan” plays out like some kind of lo-fi disco artifact, an unearthed pop jam for suburban garage dance parties. It swings. It moves. It’s got gusto. And it’s one of the catchiest things I’ve ever heard.

This song has been stuck in my head for the last fifteen years.
