ÖLÜM
Here's a new banger from LA band ÖLÜM. The group makes trippy Turkish psych and Anatolian rock, but you know, here in the states. Groove on new tune "Kara Dünya" below and download it here from the band.
The Lemon Twigs
The Lemon Twigs are back with their throwback, sing-song psych pop in May. Listen to the sweet and lovely "I Just Can't Get Over Losing You" below and pre-order the upcoming "Look for Your Mind!" LP here from Captured Tracks.
Simon Hanes
Several years ago at SXSW, i caught New York band Tredici Bacci, a wild and eclectic band that played psych and pop to craft a kind of avant garde faux soundtrack to a series of '60 Italian films that never existed. It was truly unique stuff. Well, now front man Simon Hanes is set to release his new solo effort "Gargantua" next week, and it sounds like nothing else as well, like an experimental opera made for art school devils and demonic theater kids. Check out "Hekla 1970" below and pre-order the album here from Pyroclastic Records.
The MerKaBa Brotherhood
And now for some spacey and experimental devotional jazz from The MerKaBa Brotherhood. The group's self-titled album is out in May on Mississippi Records. Pre-order the LP here and listen to the clang and bells of "Galgalim" below.
Daily Jam - Dedicated to the One I Love
Just got back from a Renaissance Festival and am now settling in for some college basketball. But first, some music from The Mamas & The Papas. Listen to "Dedicated to the One I Love" below, our Daily Jam.

Lorelle Meets the Obsolete
Mexico's Lorelle Meets the Obsolete are releasing their new "Corporeal" EP in May, a companion piece to last year's "Corporal" LP. Check out new the dark and brooding new tune "Progreso" below and pre-order the record here from Sonic Cathedral.
Ed O'Brien
Radiohead guitarist Ed O'Brien is set to release his new solo album "Blue Morpho" in May. I'm beginning to think that he's quietly been the coolest member of that band all along now. Check out the lush and beautiful, string-laden title track below and pre-order the LP here from Transgressive.
Hannah Sandoz
Here's some strange and ghostly lo-fi folk from Chicago artist Hannah Sandoz taken from last year's "MF / HS" split EP with Mirror Fish. Float away in the eerie and ethereal hiss of "All of God" below and get the cassette here from Snart Snart Records.
Pons
One of the bands i was fortunate enough to see earlier this wee was Brooklyn duo Pons, who i have to say brought a shitload of energy to a 1PM set. The band make a mix of no wave punk and noise rock and last September's frenetic "Heavens to Peter" cassette is definitely worth a listen. Check out "Boy's Surface" below and snag the tape here from the band.
Daily Jam - Tango Till They're Sore
It's Friday and the world's falling apart. Here's one of my favorite songs of all time to maybe turn the tide for a few moments. "Tango Till They're Sore" by Tom Waits sounds like the lament of the most down-on-his-luck loser, drowning himself cheap booze, and stumbling aimlessly around New Orleans (the city of my birth) hoping to find just one set of ears that cares. Listen below, our Daily Jam.

Widowspeak
To be honest, i don't think i even knew that Widowspeak were still around, but here's the New York indie pop duo heading our way with a new album in June. Check out the lovely jangle pop of new tune "If You Change" below and pre-order the "Roses" LP here from Captured Tracks.
Natalie Wildgoose
On the upcoming "Rural Hours," London artist Natalie Wildgoose makes timeless, haunting, wistful spectral folk, the pitch perfect kind of music that feels like it's always just been there with us. Listen to the sublime "Nobody on the Path" below and pre-order the EP here from state51.
The Mellons
Here's a wonderful new psych pop gem from Salt Lake City band The Mellons. Check out the bubblegum melancholia of "Black & White" below and download it here from Earth Libraries.
The Violet Mindfield
SoCal quintet The Violet Mindfield play old school garage rock that would fit right in with one of those "Nuggets" compilations without missing a beat. Check out "Slain in the Spirit" below and snag a copy of the "From the Gutter with Love" 7" here from the band.
Liz Cooper
Vermont's Liz Cooper makes cool alternative rock that nods back to grunge, post punk, trip-hop, space rock, and more. I wouldn't call it throwback rock necessarily, but she certainly wears her influences on her sleeve. Check out the wonderful ballad "Loss of Signal" below and download the artist's new "New Day" album, featuring some positively charming cover art, here. You can also pre-order the physical release here from the artist.
Labels:
alt-rock,
grunge,
Liz Cooper,
post punk,
punk,
space rock
Hot Garbage
Here's some noisy post punk from another artist i missed out on at this year's SXSW, Toronto's Hot Garbage. Dig on the spastic cacophony of "Wewu" below and download the track here from Mothland.
Johnny Falloon
I don't know too much about Athens, Georgia based band Johnny Falloon except that i missed them during SXSW, and that last week they dropped this absolutely killer no wave noise rock jam. Listen to "Bob Dylan's 116th Dream" below and download it here.
Matthew Geary
And now it's time for some droney folk and Americana from Philadelphia based guitarist Matthew Geary. Dig on the old world, hypnotic sounds of "Relentless Intrusion" below and get the new "Owl's Lament" cassette here from Scissor Tail Records.
Blackbraid
Indigenous black metal artist Blackbraid dropped a new EP earlier this month of tunes recorded during the sessions for last year's "Blackbraid III" LP. There's a raw and earthy feel to the artist's particular brand of black metal that feels like it's channeling the ancient gods and the wilderness. Grab the "Nocturnal Womb" EP here from Wolf Mountain Productions and listen to the stellar, guttural title track below.
Daily Jam - Slaves and Bulldozers
Here's a track from Soundgarden's breakout album "Badmotorfinger" to start your Thursday to. Listen to "Slaves and Bulldozers" below, our Daily Jam.

Kim Gordon
I will forever be enthralled by the sounds of Sonic Youth and all of the spinoff projects associated with the now defunct and legendary band. One of the latest is the new solo effort from Kim Gordon. There is something about her cool and detached monotone delivery that has always grabbed hold of my shoulders and screamed directly into my psyche. Grab the "Play Me" LP here from Matador and listen to "Not Today" below.
A Mourning in Heaven
Houston band A Mourning in Heaven have an excellent dour and subdued slowcore vibe going for them on their self-titled album. It sounds like a gray and rainy day turned into sound. Unfortunately, i missed them this week during SXSW, but can do my best to remedy that by spending the morning with the album. Check out "Apricity" below and download the whole thing here.
Magick Knives
The good folks over at Library of The Occult Records put out a lot of great stuff: faux film scores, horror synths, library psychedelia, and more. And every so often, they also release a real psych rock banger, this time around with the burning, churning, stoner-tinged sounds of Magick Knives. The band's new self-titled record sounds like something a bunch of stoned bikers would listen to before getting fucked up and diving into some satanic shit in the desert. Check out the album opening "The Plague" below and grab the LP here.
Lupo Citta
Here's some crunchy new rock from Boston band Lupo Citta. New track "Can't See" is a chugging mix of psych and post punk, a noise nugget for beaten brains. Check it out below and pre-order the upcoming "Inverno" LP here from 12XU.
Daily Jam - Today Is Not the Day
Gonna start my Wednesday out with a chilled out B-side from the very underrated shoegaze band Curve. Check out "Today Is Not the Day" below, our Daily Jam.

Butthole Surfers
Hallelujah! Holy shit! The Butthole Surfers are set to release their long shelved 1998 album "After the Astronaut." Originally intended to be the follow up to "Electric Larryland," the record was rejected by the band's major label and eventually morphed into the admittedly pretty shitty 2001 release "Weird Revolution." This is the record it was always meant to be, a bunch of weirdos experimenting with new electronic toys to make their version of radio pop. Check out the video for "Jet Fighter" below and be on the lookout of the album in all forms from Sunset Blvd Records.
People I Love
I probably saw about half as many bands and artists this year's SXSW as i usually do. That's just the way things happen sometimes, but i'm now finding myself knee deep in all the stuff i didn't get to see, like Brooklyn indie band People I Love. Check out the excellent and exotica-flavored "Overcast" below and pre-order the band's upcoming "Window to Another World" album here.
Wings of Desire
UK band Wings of Desire have released two singles so far this year. Both are excellent. Check out the epic, soaring mix of post punk and post rock that is "Whisper" below and download it here from the band.
TTSSFU
One of the artists i did not get a chance to check out this year at SXSW is Manchester's TTSSFU. And that's a damn shame. Dig on the warbled and wistful indie pop of "Upstairs" below and download the track here from Partisan Records.
Labels:
bedroom pop,
indie,
indie pop,
lo-fi,
Partisan Records,
TTSSFU
Jump Source
Let's get those hips and bodies ready to sway with some cool, chilled out, and club ready electronica from Montreal's Jump Source. Listen to "Shattered" featuring Helena Deland and Ross Meen below and pre-order the upcoming "Fold" LP here from Naff Recordings.
LOR3L3I
New Zealand artist LOR3L3I makes a ghostly mix of dreampop, darkwave, goth, and electronic music to wallow in your sorrows to. New album "Peace by Proxy" is due in May. Get it here from the artist and listen to "Cloak of Stars" below.
Daily Jam - The Man Who Sold the World
Here's Midge Ure's excellent darkwave synth pop take on David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold the World." This just might be my favorite version of the song. Listen below, our Daily Jam.

Lauren Lakis
One of the artists i was fortunate enough to catch this SXSW was Austin's own Lauren Lakis. She's got a very cool gothy alt-rock thing going on her latest release, 2023's "A Fiesta and a Hell." Check out the dark and moody "Take My Hand" below and snag the 10" vinyl release here from the artist.
And Also the Trees
UK band And Also the Trees have a unique mix of sounds going on on new album "The Devil's Door," bits of gothic folk, post punk, alt-rock, and old school crooner pop abounding. It's pretty damn cool. Check out the cinematic "The Silver Key" below and get the LP here.
Labels:
alt-rock,
And Also the Trees,
folk,
gothic folk,
indie,
pop,
post punk
Slash Need
If you're in Austin, and gothy, dancey darkwave is your bag, then Toronto's Slash Need have you covered. They're making the rounds this week, and have all the smoky strobes and pulsing beats you can shake your cold heart to. Check out "Leather" below and get the band's "Sit & Grin" album here.
Prurient
I feel like i haven't thought about Prurient in a long time. There was a moment when i was really into the experimental noise and electronic tones of the New York based artist, but he kind of dropped off my radar. Until now apparently with the release of new EP "Electronic City." Dig on the pulsing industrial darkwave tones of "Called Upon to Help" below and pre-order the upcoming cassette release here from Hospital Productions.
Chalk
Here's some great new industrial techno from Belfast band Chalk. New album "Crystalpunk" is full of pulsing techno beats, industrial noise, screaming, dancing, and so on. Check out the decidedly darkwave track "Can't Feel It" below and grab the LP here from ALTER Music.
Labels:
ALTER Music,
Chalk,
darkwave,
electronic,
industrial,
techno
MX Lonely
I have not been able to go out and see nearly as many SXSW shows this year as i usually do. It's a combination of things, but here's hoping i get to see a couple more bands before the event is over...like maybe Brooklyn's MX Lonely. The band makes alt-rock with some flashes of shoegaze, post punk, and grunge thrown into the stew. New album "All Monsters" is out now on Julia's War Recordings. Snag a copy of the LP here and listen to the album opening "Kill the Candle" below.
Doused
Philly band Doused make noisy, gooey shoegaze to melt your ears and brain to. The band's new "sckrpnch" EP dropped last week, and it's a hazy dream. Check out "Eyelash" below and get the album here from the band.
Daily Jam - Memory Gongs
Here is some beautiful ambient dreampop and shoegaze from Harold Budd and Cocteau Twins from the 1986 album "The Moon and the Melodies." I remember picking this LP up on a whim from a used book and record store back when i was 18 based on the cover art alone. Listen to "Memory Gongs" below, our Daily Jam.

Gus Baldwin
One of our local Austin artists making the rounds this week at SXSW is psych and garage rocker Gus Baldwin. His latest, self-titled album dropped back in October. Check out the chugging single "Credit Card" below and grab a copy of the LP here from Permanent Teeth Records.
Daily Jam - Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)
It's still a damn shame i never got to see Brian Wilson perform live. And that all the Wilson brothers were outlived by Mike fucking Love. Anyway, here's a wonderful track from "Pet Sounds." Listen to "Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)" below, our Daily Jam.

She's Green
Somehow i missed that Minneapolis shoegazers She's Green released a new track late last month. I'm going to blame me having covid or just being really busy. Anyway, check out the lovely "Mettle" below and download it here.
Glaze
Here's a track from Austin shoegaze band Glaze, whom i caught on Thursday at a day party downtown. Listen to the band's single "Diadema (Only Constant)" below and download it here.
Commercial Breaks
I've seen the name of Austin band Commercial Breaks listed on a lot or parties and showcases around town this week for SXSW. Good for them and any and all of the other locals making waves. The band just dropped a couple of new songs collectively known as "200 Guitars at Once" a few days ago. Dig on the wonderfully fuzzy lo-fi nugget "Time Is Hungry (Eats Your Money)" below and download everything here from the band.
