Algiers

Post punk band Algiers released the excellent collaborative track "Bite Back" with Billy Woods and Backxwash last month, infusing all kinds of new sounds into their usual mix of post punk, soul, and gospel.  That was just the teaser.  February brings us new album "Shook," featuring a slew of different guest artists to shake things up (pun absolutely intended), including Rage Against the Machine's Zack De La Rocha.  Check out "Irreversible Damage" below and pre-order the record here from Matador.

Algiers w/ Billy Woods & Backxwash

Atlanta band Algiers has been making interesting music for a number of years, be it their soul meets post punk beginning or the weirder sonic territories they explored as part of the Nun Gun project last year.  They continue to push forward with new track "Bite Back," featuring New York rapper Billy Woods and Canadian rapper Backxwash.  This one feels kind of like a mix of everything they've been up to this point.  It's awesome.  Listen below and download it here from Matador.

Nun Gun

I posted about the cool project Nun Gun featuring members of post punk band Algiers a couple of weeks back (here), and now it looks like the release is getting companion LP with "Stealth Maxi (Dub Companion)."  New collaborations and reworkings abound.  Check out the Mark Stewart assisted "Stealth Empire" below and get the record here.

Nun Gun

Just came across a project called Nun Gun today, and i've got to say that the whole thing is very, very much my shit.  The project consists of visual artist Brad Feuerhelm along with Lee Tesche and Ryan Mahan of post punk band Algiers.  Collaborating with a few other musicians, the whole project a critique on western post-industrial life and culture, culminating in a book of art and an accompanying soundtrack repurposing old film scores from '70s Italian mondo movies, remixing and screwing and tape looping the sounds of Frizzi, Ortolani, et al.  Just a really cool idea all around.  Check out the Michael Salu assisted, album opening "The Spectre" below and pre-order "Mondo Decay" here.

I totally forgot we were getting a new record from Algiers tomorrow.  Lead off single "Dispossession" finds the post punk band really leaning into their protest soul tendencies, and i'm digging it.  Check it out below and get the "There Is No Year" LP here from Matador.

Algiers - Cleveland

Soulful, industrial, gospel, post punk band Algiers released their latest album, "The Underside of Power" last month, but now they've got a biting and political new video about police brutality for the single "Cleveland."  It's as angry and anguished as it should be, and should be considered required viewing.  Watch below and get the record from Matador.

Algiers - The Underside of Power

Algiers' self-titled debut of gospel-tinged post punk was one of my favorite albums of 2015, so i'm stoked to find out that the band's follow up is due in June on Matador.  "The Underside of Power" was produced by Portishead's Adrian Utley (cool!), mixed by Sunn O)))'s Randall Dunn (cool!), and features additional post production work from The Men's Ben Greenberg (cool!), and should take us all to a very soulful, haunted place.  Watch the video for the title track below.

Algiers - And When You Fall

I spent the weekend working and moving and watching all of my football teams blow it.  And because of all that, i missed Algiers perform here in Austin on Friday night.  And that makes me sad.  Anyway, here's the band's video for "And When You Fall" below.  Get the self-titled record from Matador.  It's darn good.

Algiers

Algiers are here with a debut, self-titled album on Matador.  I had never heard of them until today, and brother, i am hooked.  The band are a call back to a time when gospel, soul, garage rock, and screaming, growling punk rock intertwine seamlessly to get under your skin, into your earholes, and taped to your brain, all the while feeling wonderful and brand new.  Watch the video for "Black Eunuch" below and get the record tomorrow.
