While i was at the beach last week, Austin's Tele Novella dropped new tune "Ring of Stones."  And it's lovely, a mix of psych folk, spaghetti western vibes, and indie pop.  Check it out below and download it here from Kill Rock Stars.

TEKE::TEKE

Montreal based band TEKE::TEKE make a wonderful and infectious mix of indie pop, psych rock, Japanese folk, and more to create a distinct sound all their own.  This fall they are set to release a deluxe edition of their 2023 album "Hagata."  The expanded edition features a French version of the track "Doppelganger," and it's a dream.  Check it out below and pre-order the LP here from Kill Rock Stars.

Brennan Wedl

Nashville artist Brennan Wedl makes a kind of country-strained indie rock she dubs "Nashville wench rock."  Word.  Check out her latest single "Fake Cowboy" below, download it here from Kill Rock Stars, and look for over the next few days in Austin at SXSW.

Cindy Wilson

I had no idea that Cindy Wilson of The B-52's was still making music, but here she is with new song "Midnight," a pulsing, club-ready synth pop new wave jam.  The upcoming "Realms" album is out later this summer on Kill Rock Stars.  Check the track out below and pre-order the LP here.

I caught Canadian band TEKE::TEKE last year at SXSW kind of by accident, but i'm quite happy i did.  The band's take on Japanese psychedelia, surf rock, and other weirdness was quite the spectacle live.  Anyway, they've got a new album heading our way this summer.  Listen to "Garakuta" below and pre-order the upcoming "Hagata" LP here from Kill Rock Stars.

TEKE::TEKE

So, the last few days, i've managed to pop my head into a couple of SXSW day parties while on lunch breaks, and i've caught some cool stuff, one of which is the 7-member Montreal psych rock band TEKE::TEKE.  The band fuses Japanese psych rock with surf rock, punk, and more, all with a fun and cinematic flair.  A lot of their stuff feels like it would fit in perfectly on the soundtrack to some '60s spy or crime flick set in Japan.  This is very much my shit.  Check out the cool and looming "Kizashi" below from last year's "Shirushi" LP and get the record here from Kill Rock Stars.  Also, if given the opportunity, be sure to catch these guys and girls live.

Ruth Radelet Covers Elliott Smith

It's been a few months, but we're all still very sad around these parts about the end of Chromatics.  But, it appears the band members are slowly re-entering our ears via solo projects.  We already heard from guitarist Adam Miller, and now we've got a wonderful Elliott Smith cover from singer Ruth Radelet.  The song comes from "Stars Rock Kill (Rock Stars)," a massive compilation of covers celebrating the 30 years of the Kill Rock Stars label.  I'm unfamiliar with a lot of the artists on the comp, but we do get tracks from Xiu Xiu, Tele Novella, Mike Watt, Deerhoof, and more, as well a whole lot of Elliott Smith covers.  Check out Radelet's sweet and dreamy version of "Twilight" below and download the whole collection here.

Tele Novella

Lockhart, Texas is home to a bunch of great BBQ, Bluebonnet Records, and Americana/psych pop duo Tele Novella.  New album "Merlynn Belle" was released on Friday and is a gorgeous and enchanting mix of old folk, country, and psychedelia.  Check out "Never" below and get the album here from Kill Rock Stars.

Taiwan Housing Project

Like someone took a bunch of old new wave songs, re-recorded them with a group of no wave noise artists, and then put the finished project in a blender, the music of Taiwan Housing Project sounds like a wonderful and reckless deconstruction of pop.  Featuring former members of Little Claw and Harry Pussy, the band seems to want to please and punish your ear holes at the same time.  I'm all for it.  Listen to "Authentic Alien Perfume" below and pre-order the "Veblen Death Mask" LP from Kill Rock Stars.

Marnie Stern
