ACL 2010: Day 3 (Turtles in Time)

Day 3 was more humid, but the crowds were much more manageable. We got there before noon to check out Warpaint. We were there so early, they wouldn't even sell me beer, so i had to drink stupid water instead. It was a fun day though. Gayngs cancelled due to some tour bus mishaps, and that made me a sad panda, but Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros turned out to be a great cure for the blues. And we fled the park before The Eagles could haunt us for eternity.

ACL 2010: Day 2 (Electric Boogaloo)

Begin Day 2. So many more people. So many more beers. I had to miss some acts like Kinky, Matt and Kim, and MIA due to the logistical nightmare that is navigating yourself through a see of stoned kids and grumpy old fucks in lawn chairs. It's better to just find a good spot and glue your ass to it, especially late in the day. We did manage to see some good shows though, and while i missed it, Paige gave mad props to First Aid Kit. And by mad props, i mean she said they were good. We also got to see a baked kid unknowingly blow a mushroom cloud of pot smoke into a cop's face. The smile on his face was classic.

My winner of the day was LCD Soundsystem, and the very close runner-up was The Very Best (the best African techno you'll ever want to here!). Here's some pics from the day:

ACL 2010: Day 1

Bring on the criticism! Hazaa!

So, ACL 2010 has now come and gone, and left me with a sunburned neck, some dust in the back recesses of my nose, and some pics. The weather was hot, but beautiful, the sound seemed better at most of the stages, there were more bathrooms (hooray port-a-potties!), but the douche bag ratio was way higher than normal. And that's too bad. I blame The Eagles. Anyway, my winner for day 1 is The Black Keys. They fucking brought it. Runner-up goes to Sonic Youth. Here's some pics from Friday.

The Onion

Okay, so maybe i feel obligated to recommend this pizza because it's owned and made by one of my best friends in the world, or maybe it's because it's because it's the tastiest damn pizza in Austin. Honestly. You cannot beat it. The sauce is spicy and perfect. It goes great with drunk, or hungover, or completely sober in the middle of the work week. Enjoy some Bjork

The fine, fine people over at Stereogum have given us a couple of great tribute records over the last couple of years (Radiohead's "OK Computer" and REM's "Automatic For The People") which were great. (I recommend especially checking out The Twilight Sad's version of "Climbing Up The Walls" and The Wrens' version of "Nightswimming.") This time around they're tackling Bjork's "Post," and they really swung for the fences this time. Tracks are covered by Liars, Xiu Xiu, Final Fantasy with Ed Droste, Atlas Sound, El Guincho, and No Age even takes a crack at "It's Oh So Quiet." The whole thing is awesome. It was a fantastic record, and this a fitting tribute. Enjoy it for free here.

La Sera

Katy Goodman (oh, she of Vivian Girls and All Saints Day fame) is working on a new solo project call La Sera. The "Never Come Around" 7" is due from Hardly Art in November. Feel the awesome girl group power as the wall of sound comes slamming into your face. Okay, so it's not that aggressive, but the this outing is definitely more girl group pop and less garage punk. A full length LP is due sometime in 2011. Get the mp3 of "Never Come Around" right here. Hooray!

Gayngs on Daytrotter

The smooth, indie R&B stylings of "supergroup" Gayngs LP "Relayted," which came out earlier this year has been one of my favorite releases of the year, and the boys just finished a Daytrotter session. "No Sweat" is always a winner in any form, and dig on that Sade cover. Go to Daytrotter to download the session for free. Hooray!

Warpaint

Rough Trade will be releasing the latest LP from LA's Warpaint. The ladies create spooky, dark folk jams, and if "Undertow" is any indication, the record should be pretty fucking good. And seriously, how often does Rough Trade let us down?

Ty Segall at Mohawk

Saw garage rocker Ty Segall at The Mohawk last night. He was fantastic. I recommend seeing him if you ever get a chance. Austin's own Pure Ecstasy opened. Here's some pics:
