Friday Horror Trailer - Strays

Daily Jam - When You Finish Me

There is something about the music of The Black Heart Procession that speaks to my soul in a way few other acts have ever come close to.  I really don't know how to explain, but it's music that i feel deeply every single time i listen to it.  Man i miss those guys.  Listen to achingly beautiful "When You Finish Me" below, our Daily Jam.

VOWWS

Here's some excellent and moody new death rock from LA band VOWWS.  Listen to "Blood's on Fire" below and download it here from Out of Line Music.

Full of Scorpions

It's a rainy, gloomy morning here in Central Texas.  I think some witch house-tinged techno from Portland's Full of Scorpions should pair with it nicely.  Here's the artist's glitchy interpretation of The Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams."  Check it out below and download it here from Untitled Burial.

Daily Jam - Mother

I'm about to be out of pocket for the next couple of days working a convention.  I've said my goodbyes to the boys, and i'll get some pets in for the dog before i walk out the door.  But before i start the next few 13-15 hour work days, here's some Pink Floyd.  Listen to "Mother" below, our Daily Jam.

Sivyj Yar

Typically when i come across a black metal artist from Russia, i pay attention.  Russian artist Sivyj Yar proves i am correct in doing so.  Upcoming new album "A Scarlet Sunset Over the Horrid Abyss" is, as it's title suggests, a mix of soaring atmosphere and bleak, stark mood, utilizing elements of black metal and post rock to craft an absolutely enormous and at times heart wrenching sound.  Check out "Everything Under the Snow Will Hush, then Die" below and pre-order the LP here from Italian label Avantgarde Music.

Glare

Texas shoegaze band Glare are all set to release their debut full-length LP "Sunset Funeral" in April on Deathwish Inc.  Dig on the reverb of "Guts" below and pre-order the record here.

VHS Glitch

I've been a sucker for some good synth wave for a long while now, so here's some new synth wave from VHS Glitch.  New EP "Wish You Were Here" is out now.  Download it here from the artist and listen to the airy title track below.

Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith

Here's a mellow new electronic track from Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith to calm the nerves.  Listen to "Into Your Eyes" below and download it here from Nettwerk.

Black Taffy

Dallas artist Black Taffy has been making weird music for a few years now, always interesting and worth checking out, and new album "Out Moon" might be his magnum opus.  Album opener "Pendulum Swing" is the sound of watching an old black and white movie's musical and dance sequence while time slows and you fall into it yourself.  The rest of the album follows suit with old classical samples, subdued beats, and warbled tape hiss, a dark, surreal, and ethereal world.  Check it out below and pre-order the LP here from Leaving Records.

Daily Jam - Hjartað Hamast (Bamm Bamm Bamm)

For my money, Sigur Rós's 1999 album "Ágætis Byrjun" is still one of the most beautiful and emotional records ever made.  Here's a track.  Listen to "Hjartað Hamast (Bamm Bamm Bamm)" below, our Daily Jam.

Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs

In April, we're getting new music from UK stoner rock band Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs.  Taking a peek at the tracklisting for the upcoming "Death Hilarious," i'm very eager to hear the band's collaboration with New York rapper and producer El-P, but that will have to wait for now.  In the meanwhile, check out the excellent "Stitches" below and pre-order the LP here from the band, out on Rocket Recordings.

Motorpsycho

Next month brings us chugging new music from Norwegian rock n' roll band Motorpsycho.  Listen to "Stanley (Tonight's the Night)" below, chug a beer, pump your fist in the air, and jump around the room with zest and vigor.  And pre-order the self-titled LP here from the band.

Infinity Knives & Brian Ennals

Baltimore hip-hop duo Infinity Knives & Brian Ennals are back with their upcoming new album "A City Drowned in God's Black Tears."  The duo's 2022 album "King Cobra" is one of my favorites, so we're pretty stoked around these parts to be getting new music.  Check out the Spanish flavored "Sometime, Papi Chulo" featuring Gabriela Bibiana below and pre-order the LP here from Phantom Limb.

Divine Shade

When i was in high school, i went through a long stretch where i was really, really into industrial music.  It began with Nine Inch Nails and then proceeded back into some other really good stuff (Ministry, Wax Trax Records, etc.), but also some then current artists that i'm kind of embarrassed that i was into back then (Stabbing Westward, Gravity Kills, etc.).  But youthful indiscretion aside, i still dig on those dark electronic and industrial tones.  And so we have French artist Divine Shade and new album "Fragments-Vol.1."  Collecting an assortment of singles and more from the artist, it hits all those right spots with flashes of darkwave synth pop, techno, and industrial rock.  Listen to the Chris Vrenna remixed "The Stars Eclipsed" below and get the album here.

Snuggle

Copenhagen alt-rock band Snuggle just released their very cool new single "Marigold," which sounds like the kind of thing i might have been listening to in high school with the cool art chicks.  Check it out below and download the song here from Escho.

Daily Jam - Allergic

30 years on, and Failure is still one of my favorite bands of all time, and yet despite his numerous other projects, lead singer Ken Andrews has only released one solo album under his own name with 2006's "Secrets of the Lost Satellite."  That album just got its first vinyl reissue late last year.  Hoping we'll see some other Andrews associated acts (thinking of Replicants or On in particular) follow suit soon.  In the meanwhile, here the artist is with the spacey and melancholy "Allergic," our Daily Jam.

Matt Berry

English actor, comedian, and musician Matt Berry just dropped new album "Heard Noises," a collection of throwback art pop that pulls from library sounds, psychedelia and acid rock.  Dig on "Wedding Photo Stranger" below and get the album here from Acid Jazz Records.

Daily Jam - On Days Like These

I've been thinking about doing a deep dive into the work of music producer and composer extraordinaire Quincy Jones.  Starting with some vocal pop from the soundtrack to the original "The Italian Job," featuring Matt Monro on said vocals.  Listen below, our Daily Jam.

Snapped Ankles

March brings us new music from London-based electro-post punk outfit Snapped Ankles.  Prepare thy asses for shaking.  Dig on new single "Raoul" below and pre-order the excellently titled "Hard Times Furious Dancing" LP here from The Leaf Label.

Cross Record

Former Central Texas now UK based artist Cross Record has a new album of dark, dreamy, folky indie rock heading our way in March with the upcoming "Crush Me."  Check out first single "Charred Grass" below and pre-order the LP here from Ba Da Bing Records.

Daily Jam - I Ain't Mad at Cha

For whatever reason, Tupac Shakur's "I Ain't Mad at Cha" has made its way into my brain maybe once a week for the last 29 years.  I don't know why.  But today's the day.  Let's listen below, our Daily Jam.

The Jesus Lizard

Since blasting back onto the scene last year, it appears that perhaps The Jesus Lizard are beginning a Renaissance era of sorts.  I can tell you at least, from catching them live in Austin back in November, that they haven't missed a step.  And they just dropped new tune "Westside" a few days ago.  It's pretty damn cool.  Check it out below and download it here from Ipecac.

Daily Jam - Vanity Fair

We all have our favorite albums, but then there are also those albums we can listen to whenever and wherever, circumstances or mood be damned.  Mr. Bungle's "California" is one of those albums for me.  Listen to the album's penultimate track "Vanity Fair" below, our Daily Jam.

Dax Riggs

Hailing from Lafayette, Louisiana, alt-rock troubadour Dax Riggs trades in stoner-tinged and bluesy grunge with a kind of Southern Gothic flair.  Dig on the moody, downtrodden "Sunshine Felt the Darkness Smile" below to get an idea about what i'm talking about, and order the artist's new album "7 Songs for Spiders" here from Fat Possum.

The Body & Intensive Care

The ever prolific Portland experimental metal duo The Body are at it again with their upcoming collaborative effort with Toronto industrial band Intensive Care, "Was I Good Enough?"  Check out the noisy and blistering "At Death's Door" below and pre-order the LP here from Closed Casket Activities.

Friday Horror Trailer - Revenge

Daily Jam - China Girl

It's been a long ass day so far.  Listening to some Iggy Pop to wind down, though still working.  One of the things i love about "China Girl" is that allegedly David Bowie re-recorded it for his "Let's Dance" album in order to get some extra royalties for his friend.  Just cool dudes all around.  Listen below, our Daily Jam.

Thursday, January 23, 2025

Circuit des Yeux

For whatever reason, Chicago band Circuit des Yeux is one of the artists that has just never clicked with me.  That seems primed to finally change with the upcoming new album "Halo on the Inside."  First taste "Megaloner" combines moody darkwave synths with gothic overtones and some dark and foreboding, late-era Scott Walker experimental theatrics to craft an bleak and intense sound.  Hell yeah.  Listen below and pre-order the LP here from Matador.

Index For Working Musik

The sounds of UK post punk band Index For Working Musik are kind of hard to pin down, the band's inclination to flutter around from one vibe to another creating a dizzying and fascinating listen.  New album "Which Direction Goes the Beam" seems set to be one of those unclassifiable records we all know and love, and "Purple Born" plays like a perfect representation of that whole mood.  Listen to the track below and pre-order the LP, due in April, here from Tough Love.

SUMAC and Moor Mother

Poet and rapper Moor Mother has collaborated with all manner of artist in the past, and on the upcoming new album "The Film," finds herself aligned with post metal supergroup SUMAC.  Expect an intense, noisy, and weird time.  Listen to "Scene 1" below and pre-order the LP here from Thrill Jockey.

AMENRA

Belgian band AMENRA are set to drop two new EP's in March with "De Toorn" and "With Fang and Claw."  "Heden," the first track from the former slowly builds, starting with a barely-there beat that's eventually accompanied by somber post rock guitar notes and a kind of spoken word vocal delivery, until the rest of the band finally joins in at 10 minutes with a grungey, slow churning and cacophonous black metal noise and post metal bombast.  Check it out below and pre-order both records here from Relapse.

Daily Jam - Moya

Some mornings i just can't escape the creeping dread.  And there's not a lot of music out there that captures that feeling quite the way the moody post rock of Godspeed You! Black Emperor can.  They've been doing it for over a quarter century now.  Here they are with "Moya," our Daily Jam.

Alabaster DePlume

Singer, saxophonist, composer, and poet Alabaster DePlume has a new record of experimental jazz coming our way in March.  Pre-order "A Blade Because a Blade Is Whole" here from the indispensable International Anthem label and listen to the lovely album opening "Oh My Actual Days" below.

Daily Jam - Spring Hall Convert

I feel like we're due for some new music from Deerhunter.  Does anyone know if they broke up or anything?  I hope not.  Here's a track from their 2007 album "Cryptograms."  Listen to "Spring Hall Convert" below, our Daily Jam.

Lust For Youth & Croatian Amor

Denmark darkwave band Lust For Youth have partnered again with Denmark electronic artist Croatian Amor for the upcoming new collaborative album "All Worlds."  Check out the dreamy atmospherics of "Dummy," featuring an assist from experimental noise artist Prurient, below and pre-order the LP here from Sacred Bones.

Daily Jam - Helicopter

We've got a little bit of ice and snow on the ground today, so the kids are home from school, but since i work from home a lot of the time, that means there are no snow days for me.  So, let's listen to a little experimental, psych-tinged krautrock from German band Sand to do a little data entry to.  Check it out "Helicopter" below, our Daily Jam.

LLORA

It's cold in Central Texas right now (at least it's cold for us), and we're looking at sub-freezing temperatures for the next couple of days.  Here's some adequately icy darkwave from Dallas artist LLORA to get us through to the other side.  Listen to "Forward" below and get the artist's new self-titled album here.

Daily Jam - Save Me

We truly do live in the stupidest of times.  Here's Aretha Franklin with "Save Me" to try (and fail) to make me feel better if only for a couple of minutes.  Listen below, our Daily Jam.

Sunday, January 19, 2025

Pudéndüm

Ukrainian electronic duo Pudéndüm make strange and dreamy (and they would said erotic) electro-pop music for the masses.  New album "ØNE" is out now, a sparse and icy affair of yearning and beats.  Get it here from the artist and listen to "CTRL" below featuring Anya.  Put some Pudéndüm into your agendum.

Daily Jam - Dancing Days

And now for a cut from my favorite Led Zeppelin album "Houses of the Holy."  Dig on "Dancing Days" below, our Daily Jam.

Memory Pearl

Back in the '70s, a group of psychotherapists developed the Cosmic Astral Program, a listening routine for patients on LSD for study.  In 2025, Canadian artist Memory Pearl pays homage to the project with "Cosmic-Astral," a collection of psych and jazz-tinged new age music...possibly for patients on LSD.  Listen to "Astral Travel" below and pre-order the LP here from Boiled Records.

Daily Jam - Still Remains

Here's a love song from Stone Temple Pilots for your Saturday afternoon.  Listen to "Still Remains" below, our Daily Jam.

Monde UFO

I've really been digging on the work of LA band Monde UFO the last couple of years, their mix of jazz, lounge, exotica, and psych-tinged alt-rock scratching a particular itch i wasn't even aware i had.  The band's new album "Flamingo Tower" is out in March.  Listen to the strange "Samba 9" below and pre-order the LP here from Fire Records.

SUSS - This Land Is Your Land

On Monday, all the absolute worst people you know are going to be high-fiving each other and spewing hate at everyone who doesn't think or look just like them.  I think this somber, minor-key interpretation of Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land" by New York ambient country trio SUSS should soundtrack the whole affair perfectly.  Listen below and download it here from Northern Spy Records.

Akira Galaxy Covers The Verve

LA pop artist Akira Galaxy just dropped her cover of a late '90s staple for our listening pleasure.  And it's a pretty straight forward interpretation too.  Listen to the artist take on The Verve's "Bitter Sweet Symphony" below and download it here from Bright Antenna Records.

Tim Hecker

Tim Hecker's got the goods when it comes to ambient soundscapes, and the artist has a new record of said ambient soundscapes heading our way next month.  Check out the wonderful "Sunset Key Melt" below and pre-order the "Shards" LP here from kranky.

Friday Horror Trailer - Eraserhead

Daily Jam - An Olive Grove Facing the Sea

Here's an old wistful track from Scottish band Snow Patrol to end the work week to.  Listen to "An Olive Grove Facing the Sea" below, our Daily Jam.

RIP David Lynch

Absolutely gutted.  David Lynch was the kind of artist that others will forever attempt to emulate.  Me included.  He seemed to understand the duality of man, both the good and the evil, the beautiful and the terrible, better than anyone else i can think of.  There will never be another quite like him.  RIP David Lynch.
