Wolves in the Throne Room

The Body & Cel Genesis

Krallice

Chat Pile

Oklahoma City metal band Chat Pile are quickly becoming one of my favorite bands these days, their mix of black metal, emo, and grunge, along with their penchant for experimentation, just vibing with me in all the right ways.  September sees the release of new album "Who Loves the Sun."  Pre-order the LP here from The Flenser and listen to the crunchy "Deep Blue" below.

Daily Jam - Thuja Magus Imperium

Sugar Horse

Here's some new music from the often uncategorizable Bristol band Sugar Horse.  The band's wild and cacophonous mix of black metal, alt-rock, noise, and prog rock can make the head spin in the best ways.  New album "Not a Sound in Heaven" is out now.  Get it here from Fat Dracula Records and listen to the doom-laden album closer "You Can't Say Dallas Doesn't Love You" below.

A Somber Funeral

I love it when you hear a band name and immediately know what you're about to get into.  With Germany's A Somber Funeral, my guess was either dark and gloomy dungeon synth or noisy, lo-fi black metal.  Turns out it's both!  Check out "Maybe She's Dreaming" featuring Winterherz below and grab the "Since You Left These Shores" LP here from Silent Watcher Records.

Barren Canyon

Now it's time for some dramatic and atmospheric new black metal from Canadian duo Barren Canyon.  The band's "A Virulent Stream" is out in May on Avantgarde Music.  Pre-order it here and listen to the cosmic and abyssal "Effluvial Pools" below.

Blackbraid

Indigenous black metal artist Blackbraid dropped a new EP earlier this month of tunes recorded during the sessions for last year's "Blackbraid III" LP.  There's a raw and earthy feel to the artist's particular brand of black metal that feels like it's channeling the ancient gods and the wilderness.  Grab the "Nocturnal Womb" EP here from Wolf Mountain Productions and listen to the stellar, guttural title track below.

Portrayal of Guilt

Oh hell yeah, we've got new music from Austin's Portrayal of Guilt heading our way next month.  One of the things i love about these guys is that they constantly push their particular brand of black metal into new and different and weird places with every release, whether it be stripping the guitars in favor of the most evil sounding string section you can imagine, or the bits of industrial and alternative rock that seem to be surfacing on new track "Ecstasy."  It works, and i've got to say i can't wait to hear the rest of "...Beginning of the End" in April.  Check the track out below and pre-order the LP here from Run For Cover Records.

Chat Pile

Oklahoma hardcore punk/black metal/screamo band hybrid dropped a new 7" on Friday that i missed out on whilst working all weekend.  The A-side is a beast and the B-side is a cover of an old Nirvana song.  Check out both "Masks" and the "Sifting" cover below and download them here from Sub Pop (the vinyl is already sold out).

Këkht Aräkh

Here's some crusty, lo-fi new black metal from Ukrainian artist Këkht Aräkh.  New album "Morning Star" is out in March.  Pre-order the LP here from Sacred Bones and listen to "Three Winters Away" below.

Olhava

This February brings us epic and icy new atmospheric black metal from Russian band Olhava.  Listen to the sprawling and gorgeous "When the Ashes Grow Cold" below, a track that somehow sounds like the universe coming to an end and being reborn at the same time.  Totally earth moving stuff.  And pre-order the "Memorial" LP here from Avantgarde Music.

Chat Pile & Hayden Pedigo

In musical pairings i wasn't expecting to hear today, Oklahoma City noise rock/black metal/screamo band Chat Pile have teamed up with Amarillo folk and country artist Hayden Pedigo for the upcoming new album "In the Earth Again."  New tune "Radioactive Dreams" finds the artists exercising a more atmospheric sound of eerie, foreboding doom.  It's very cool.  Check it out below and pre-order the LP here from The Flenser.

Agriculture

LA metal band Agriculture have a new album heading our way in October with the upcoming "The Spiritual Sound."  Pre-order the LP here from The Flenser and check out first single "Bodhidharma" below.  It bounces around from black metal to emo to slowcore and back again.

Beginning with a sample of Winona Ryder, "Your Smile Is Killing Me," the first single from Athens, Greece artist Sorry...'s upcoming album "Fragile," sets the proverbial tone of what is to follow.  The track is a mix of gothy death rock, black metal vocal wailing, post punk, and an overall lo-fi aesthetic that feels raw and anguished.  Or to put things more bluntly, it fucking rules.  Check the track out below and pre-order the album here from the artist.
