Infinity Knives x Brian Ennals

Baltimore hip-hop duo Infinity Knives and Brian Ennals dropped their new "AMDIA" EP this morning, and it's got all the unique, underground production, stylistic left turns, and pissed off, left wing lyrical content we've come to expect.  Listen to the scathing title track below ("If you're an ICE agent, kill yourself...your kids are better off without you") and download everything here from Phantom Limb.

Liars

This morning, Liars announced their 11th(!) album, "A Ban on Plastic Bag Bans," out next year on Mute.  It's absolutely wild to think the band (albeit with a revolving lineup) has been making weird music for us for almost 25 years.  Check out new tune "Ice Pick, Kalamazoo" below and pre-order the LP here.

Daphne's Demise

Ontario artist Daphne's Demise dropped new track "Lucky Trees" a few days ago, the first taste from upcoming new album "Meticulous Motion."  It's got a nice alt-country vibe, the perfect kind of thing to wind down a long weekend to.  Check it out below and download it here.

The Thorn

Here's a haunting new psych folk track from UK band The Thorn (FKA Large Plants), a rework of traditional French ballad "La Pernette."  Listen below and download it here from the artist.

Magic Circle

Magic Circle is the project of Arkansas artist Jeffery Scott Greer.  Recording at home on a Tascam 4-track cassette recorder (hey, i used to have one of those), Greer makes throwback psychedelic rock on new album "The Thinning Veil Between Worlds," with the lo-fi quality of the recording giving everything a vintage '60s feel, like the soundtrack from some Satan-worshipping biker movie.  Dig on the album opening "Hóstblot" below and pay what you want for the download here.

Daily Jam - Manjushage

Happy Labor Day.  Here's some excellent Japanese folk rock from the late '70s from Noriko Tsuwa.  "Manjushage" evokes a dark and anguished atmosphere, smoke-filled rooms and dim lights, questions with answers found at the bottom of a bottle.  Check it out below, our Daily Jam.

TVAM & Riki

Here's a dark an icy new collab from Manchester's TVAM and LA's Riki.  "The Sorrow" sounds like the soundtrack to some '80s goth teen's dark night of the soul brooding session.  Check it out below and get the single here, along with a remix in download or cassingle form from TVAM's Psychic Data label.

Midweek Circle

Stumbled upon some great new music from Edinburgh band Midweek Circle while bumming around on Bandcamp the other night.  The group makes throwback pop with elements of folk, kosmische psychedelia, and plenty of analog synthesizers that feels like it's being broadcast from some mysterious valley in Great Britain.  Check out "In the Wind" below and grab the "Macramé For Beginners" cassette here from the band.

Teenage Fanclub

There is some alternate universe somewhere where Teenage Fanclub's 1991 album "Bandwagonesque" is the cultural fulcrum point for pop music that Nirvana's "Nevermind" ended up being in our own.  No complaints on Nirvana, but it's probably pretty cool in that Teenage Fanclub universe.  Anyway, the Scottish band have a new album heading our way in October with "Do Not Dare to Dream."  Check out the catchy and jangly "Day in the Sun" below and pre-order the LP here from Merge.

Butthole Surfers: The Hole Truth and Nothing Butt

I don't post nearly as much stuff about movies as i need to on this blog.  Hopefully this one today inspires me to work on that more.  Anyhoo, i finally got to see the fantastic "Butthole Surfers: The Hole Truth and Nothing Butt" documentary last night, and it was an amazing piece of work, a true testament to the Austin band of freaks, weirdos, and chaos agents.  I expected to dig it a lot, and i did.  I did not expect it to make me cry, and it did.  Tom Stern's doc gets my full-throated recommendation (it's totally going to be on my year-end favs list).  Check out the trailer below and see it when and where you can.

R. Missing

New York's R. Missing is proving to be quite the prolific artist, dropping single after single, and album after album these last couple years.  It can be hard to keep up.  Anyway, it's still fun to try, and her latest, "I Can Feel Your Solar System," is a lovely mix of dreampop and dark, dancey synth pop.  Check it out below and download it here.

Ancient Channels

Here's some excellent new music from Brisbane band Ancient Channels.  The quintet make a mix of death rock, darkwave synth pop, post punk, shoegaze, dreampop, and more, essentially a dream blunt rotation of musical subgenres.  Check out the dark, gloomy, and reverb-drenched "Hex Beat" below and grab the band's "Static Spirit" LP here from False Peak Records.

King Dude

Seattle based goth folk artist King Dude dropped a new track yesterday, the part ominous, part anguished "Sunset Skies."  It's a dark little number, and hopefully a harbinger for the coming autumn.  Check it out below and download it here from the artist.

Interpol

Interpol's 2002 debut album is an all timer for me, one of my favorite records ever, but they've never quite grabbed my attention with any subsequent release.  And i'm not saying that "This Mirror Weighs a Ton," the band's new LP, is anywhere near and dear to my heart as "Turn on the Bright Lights," it does at least have me paying attention again.  There's plenty of the band's early '00s post punk sound on the album, but they also branch out a little bit with moments of dreamy, albeit downcast, indie pop, like on "Iron City."  I'm going to have to give this one a few more listens.  As John Wick says, "Yeah, i'm thinking i'm back."  Listen below and get the LP here from Partisan Records.

Pentagrams of Discordia

With a name like Pentagrams of Discordia, i kind of expected dark and ominous tones, portent harbingers of doom and whatnot, but the French Guiana artist actually makes chilled out IDM with flashes of the cinematic and ambient waves.  Great stuff for centering yourself.  New album "Whispers About Radiance" is out now.  Grab it here from the artist and listen to the sprawling "Slowing of Evolution" below.
