Tony Jay

Here's some excellent lo-fi, dreamy, and Velvet Underground-inspired fuzz from San Francisco artist Tony Jay.  "Faithless" was originally released earlier this year as a tour only cassette in Japan.  But now we can all listen in.  Hooray!  Check out the album opening "Lose a Day" below and download the album here.

Just Mustard

I caught Irish post punk band Just Mustard a couple of years back at SXSW, and they were great...one of those bands i sought out to see a second time that week.  Anyhoo, they're back today with new single "Pollyanna."  It's nice and noisy.  Listen below and download it here from Partisan Records.

Daily Jam - Fuck the World

Getting a little rowdy on a Tuesday morning with Norwegian "death-punk" from Turbonegro.  From 2003's "Scandinavian Leather," listen to "Fuck the World" below, our Daily Jam.

Black Lips

After dropping a couple of excellent singles already this year, the long-running Atlanta garage rock band Black Lips are set to release new album "Season of the Peach" in September.  Listen to the '60s pop aping "Tippy Tongue" below and pre-order the LP here from Fire Records.

Daily Jam - He Hit Me (And It Felt Like a Kiss)

Here's some girl group wall-of-sound vibes to start your week to.  Listen to The Crystals' excellent, if not a little problematic, "He Hit Me (And It Felt Like a Kiss)" below, our Daily Jam.

A Shrine to Failure

Here's some poppy darkwave from the perfectly goth named German duo A Shrine to Failure.  Listen to "The Clock that Never Turns" below and download the band's new "Undone" album here.

Ben LaMar Gay

The good folks over at International Anthem just released the latest album from Ben LaMar Gay, and "Yowzers" is a wonderful mix of jazz and soul...basically the kind of thing you come to expect from Ben LaMar Gay.  Dig on the soulful title track below and get the LP here.

Daily Jam - (Don't Fear) The Reaper

While certainly funny, in a lot of ways the SNL "Cowbell Sketch" kind of ruined Blue Oyster Cult's "(Don't Fear) The Reaper."  And that's really a shame, but it's an all-timer of a track.  So we're taking it back.  Listen below, our Daily Jam.

Nightshift

Glasgow post punk band Nightshift just dropped two new tracks today that you can download here and donate to Children Not Numbers, a non-profit group on the ground providing aid to children in Gaza.  Check out "Dice" and Firefly" below and be sure to donate here.

Friday Horror Trailer - Jason X

Daily Jam - Shake Your Blood

In 2004, Dave Grohl got to record an album where he played drums for all of his heavy metal heroes called Probot.  It must have been pretty rad in that studio.  Here he is with Motorhead legend, the late, great Lemmy Kilmister on "Shake Your Blood," our Daily Jam.

The New Eves

UK four-piece The New Eves are set to release their debut full-length LP, "The New Eve Is Rising," in August on Transgressive Records.  The group's musical style is a cello-laden mix of no wave punk, avant garde rock, and English folk, weird and wonderful stuff.  Check out new tune "Cow Song" below and pre-order the record here.

Daily Jam - Hell

Houston electronic and darkwave artist Twisted Wires only released a handful of tracks throughout the '10s, most notably for Johnny Jewel's Italians Do It Better label.  But my favorite appeared on Texas electronic mix compilation from 2010.  Listen to the brooding and mysterious "Hell" below, our Daily Jam.

RIP Brian Wilson

Absolutely devastated by the news that Beach Boys founder Brian Wilson passed away today.  When i was a kid the first three cassettes i ever bought were a collection of James Bond theme songs, a pop compilation called "Rock '85," and a greatest hits tape by The Beach Boys.  Wilson's music has been a part of my life for as far back as i can remember, and "God Only Knows" might just be the best pop song ever recorded.  Here's a quote from Bob Dylan about Wilson:

He made all his records with four tracks, but you couldn't make his records if you had a hundred tracks today.

Damn right.  I'm going to have to listen to some surf vibrations this evening, but i may as well begin with the aforementioned "God Only Knows."  RIP Brian Wilson.

Editrix

July brings us jerky and frenetic new music from Massachusetts band Editrix with the upcoming "The Big E."  Experimental noise for everyone!  Hooray!  Check out the title track below and pre-order the LP here from Joyful Noise Recordings.

Joseph Allred

Boston guitarist Joseph Allred has been making music for a number of years now, releasing over 20 albums in that time, and somehow, it all feels like it was leading to the upcoming new album "Old Time Fantasias" which drops this Friday.  The album feels huge (even at just 7 tracks), incorporating elements of folk, country, blues, ragtime, pop, ambient soundscapes, and so much more to create a kind of cinematic instrumental Americana, a soundtrack to life.  Check out the wonderful and swaying "Moon Dance" below and order the new LP here from Scissor Tail Records.

Waving Blue

Italian alt-rock band Waving Blue dropped their new "City Sparks / Jackie" single a few days ago, and the download includes a particularly fuzzy version of the A-side.  Dig on the dreamy shoegazey hum of "City Sparks (Slowgaze Version)" below and download the whole thing here from the band.

Daily Jam - Bloody Kisses (A Death in the Family)

I distinctly remember the first time i heard Type O Negative, a friend letting me listen to it on his Walkman on a school bus in 10th grade.  At 15 years old, i had never heard anything like it, and honestly 31 years later, have still not.  Doom and gloom has never sounded slower, heavier, or more beautiful.  Here's a track from band's 1993 album "Bloody Kisses" for what is looking to be an overcast and rainy day here in Central Texas.  Listen to "Bloody Kisses (A Death in the Family)" below, our Daily Jam.

RIP Sly Stone

I saw the terrible news last night that we lost the legendary Sly Stone yesterday.  The man was a visionary and a marvel.  Here's one of my favorite Sly & The Family Stone tracks to celebrate his life and times.  Listen to "I Want to Take You Higher" below.  RIP Sly Stone.

The Sorcerers

Here's some funky and very cool new cosmic jazz from UK band The Sorcerers.  Dig on the far out groove of "Ancestral Machines" below and pre-order the upcoming "Other Worlds and Habitats" LP here from ATA Records.

Daily Jam - Falling from Grace

Much like how some of the best shoegaze out there comes from Japan or Korea, a lot of the best darkwave synth pop comes to us via France.  Here's Minuit Machine side project Hante. with "Falling from Grace" to prove the point.  Listen below, our Daily Jam.

Sophia Stel

It's getting really poppy around here today, so here's a club ready number from Vancouver artist Sophia Stel to close your eyes and dance to.  Listen to "Everyone Falls Asleep in Their Own Time" below and download it here from Pack Records.

Daily Jam - Until Death (Us Do Part)

Feeling like some industrial techno and darkwave this morning while i do a little data entry for work.  Belgium group Front 242 should serve nicely.  Check out "Until Death (Us Do Part)" below, our Daily Jam.

Ethel Cain

I have to admit that i was late to the Ethel Cain train, but this year's "Perverts" album got me hooked, that album's sprawling mix of ambient, drone, field recordings, goth, and more putting me in very specific kind of headspace.  It ruled.  Anyhoo, the artist has another album coming out this year with August's "Willoughby Tucker, I'll Always Love You."  Our first taste is new tune "Nettles," and its mellow Americana and folk sound signals something far more accessible than "Perverts."  Check the track out below and look for the album in August from Daughters of Cain.

Daily Jam - Stuck in Here

Here's a mellow and brooding number from Filter's 1995 debut that i just realized is 30 years old now, and holy moly am i getting old.  Listen to "Stuck in Here" below, our Daily Jam.

Sven Wunder

Here's a lovely and cinematic new track from Swedish artist Sven Wunder, who continues to crank out lovely and cinematic music on the regular.  The usual flourishes of funk, psych, soul, and world pop make the upcoming "Daybreak" LP the perfect recording for all you library heads out there.  Dig on the title track below and pre-order the LP here from Piano Piano Records.

Daily Jam - Aurora

Australian electro-pop group Midnight Juggernauts' 2007 debut full-length "Dystopia" is probably one of my favorite albums of the '00s.  And it's never gotten a vinyl release.  I wish someone would remedy that.  Here's the album's spacey closing track "Aurora."  Listen below, our Daily Jam.

Friday Horror Trailer - The Driller Killer

Yndling

Norwegian synth and dreampop artist Yndling compiles all of her excellent singles from this year onto new EP "(I'm in the Palm of Your Hand)."  It's making me kick myself again for not prioritizing seeing her during SXSW.  Check out new tune "Even If It's a Lie (I Don't Mind)" below and download the EP here from Spirit Goth Records.

Daily Jam - A Touching Display

Wire is maybe the best punk/post-punk band of the late '70s.  At the very least, a conversation needs to be had.  Here they are with a track from 1979's "154."  Listen to "A Touching Display" below, our Daily Jam.

Mount Mural

Canadian band Mount Mural makes a dreamy mix of alt-rock, shoegaze, post rock, and pop that's an absolute sonic balm for my soul.  New track "Pattern Fades" sounds like the kind of dreampop that might play at the Roadhouse in "Twin Peaks," that layer of darkness lying just beneath the surface.  Check it out below and download it here from the band.

Daily Jam - Pretty When We Land

Here's some cool '90s Austin underground alt-rock for your Thursday.  Check out Silver Scooter with "Pretty When We Land," our Daily Jam.

Kevin Nichols

LA-based artist Kevin Nichols has been kicking out the throwback grungey alt-rock tracks for a number of years now, and his latest feels like a '90s underground dream.  Get the new "Empty Out Who You Are" album here and listen to the title track below.

Daily Jam - Fur Immer (Forever)

I'm going to be busy as hell today.  It's krautrock time.  Here's a track from Neu! to get us through the day.  Listen to "Fur Immer (Forever)" below, our Daily Jam.

Marissa Nadler

August brings us new music from prolific dark folk chanteuse Marissa Nadler.  Pre-order the "New Radiations" LP here from Sacred Bones and listen to the excellent and faintly spaghetti western-sounding title track below.

Zetra

Woke up this morning to a new single from UK goth metal darkwave duo Zetra.  "So" sounds like it could have been included on last year's self-titled full-length album, a dark and poppy lament.  Check it out below and download it here from Nuclear Blast.

Sally Dige

Berlin-based synth pop artist Sally Dige throws in some elements of dreampop, goth, and post-punk on new single "Sow the Path," creating a simultaneously moody and glimmering track.  It's quite nice.  Check it out below and download it here.

Daily Jam - Space Caravan

A good way to find out that you probably have too many records is to come across one you didn't even realize you have.  Such is the case with "Discosmic Dance," a one-off release from Belgian disco group(?)/artist(?) Chris Craft.  I don't remember where i ever picked this one up.  Anyhoo, let's all dig on the groovy space rhythms of "Space Caravan" below, our Daily Jam...and then maybe go buy some more records.

VOWWS

Here's a gloomy, synth-laden new track from LA death rock band VOWWS.  They've been pretty busy dropping new singles here and there over the last year, so i'm hoping a new full-length might be on the horizon.  Check out "Shudder" below and download it here from Out of Line Music.

Prepare My Glider

The good folks over at Shore Dive Records just released a very cool compilation of tracks from Canadian shoegaze band Prepare My Glider.  The group makes fuzzy, hazy daydream music to float away to.  Check out "Breathe" below and grab the self-titled LP here.

Daily Jam - She's So High

Starting the week with an old classic from Blur.  Listen to "She's So High" below, our Daily Jam.

Swans

I had no idea we were getting new music from Swans this year, but the ever-evolving band just dropped their 17th studio album on Friday with the heavy, lush, and sprawling "Birthing."  The band's mix of post punk, post rock, noise, and more remains intact, with the feeling that something ancient lays beneath the din.  Check out the epic title track below and get the 3LP here from Young God Records.

Daily Jam - Talking in Your Sleep

I'm going to attempt to remove a dead tree from my backyard here in just a few.  Wish me luck and keeping all of my limbs and digits.  In the meantime, here's The Romantics with "Talking in Your Sleep," our Daily Jam.

Pyrex

And now for some good, old fashioned noisy hardcore punk from New York trio Pyrex.  Listen to the blistering "Slugman" below and get the "Slugman" 7" here from La Vida Es Un Discos.  Good night everybody.

Daily Jam - Lines

There are currently a half dozen 12-year old boys making all kinds of noise upstairs for a birthday party sleepover.  Maybe you know this and may you don't, but 12-year old boys are...real weird.  Anyway, i'm just gonna listen to some music from The Walker Brothers while i reconsider some choices tonight.  Listen to "Lines" below, our Daily Jam.

Sungaze

Here's a new one from Cincinnati alt-rock band Sungaze.  Shoegaze and grunge swirl and smash together on new single "Shadows" to wonderful and echoed effect.  Check the track out below and download it here from the band.

Kitten Paws

Here's some nice and crunchy lo-fi shoegaze from Sweden's Kitten Paws.  Dig on the fuzz of "Ett Poem" below and download the new "I Rymden Kan Ingen Hora Din Fuzz" EP here.

Friday Horror Trailer - Houseboat Horror

Daily Jam - Around & Around

Sometimes, i believe that Japanese bands aping western style music genres actually sound more like the genre their emulating than the American or British bands that inspired them.  Kind of like how caricatured drawings look more like a person than they actually do.  Case in point is the psych pop-tinged garage rock sounds of '60s Japanese band The Spiders.  Check out the raucous "Around & Around" below for the proof in the proverbial pudding, our Daily Jam.
