Go Kurosawa

My mind is all over the place today.  It was like that yesterday too.  Just completely brain fried.  And it's gonna get a whole lot worse over the next few weeks as my work schedule is going to be pretty tough.  A lot of travel.  A lot of really early mornings.  A lot of 12+ hour days.  Bring on the brain goo.  Anyway, as i try to center myself a little and maybe soothe the nerves before another work trip tomorrow, here's some new music from Japanese psych folk outfit Maya Ongaku.  Check out the mellow and trippy "Iyo no Hito" below and pre-order the band's upcoming "Electronic Phantoms" LP here from Guruguru Brain.

LAIR

Kikagaku Moyo

Here is some excellent new psych rock from Japanese band Kikagaku Moyo.  Worldly interstellar vibes for days and days and days.  New album "Kumoyo Island" dropped yesterday.  Get it here from Guruguru Brain and start your trip with the album opening "Monaka" below.  Then go from there.

Satomimagae

Here's some oozing and mysterious music out of Japan's acid folk scene from Satomimagae.  "Numa" floats and moves in slow motion, bits of acoustic guitar caressing electronic tones and soft, ghostly vocals.  Check it out below and pre-order the upcoming "Hanazono" LP here via Guruguru Brain.

Dhidalah

I don't know how they do it, but it certainly seems like the Japanese are just really, really good at sonically melting our faces off.  It must be something in the blood.  Anyway, here's some face melting, interstellar space rock from Japan's Dhidalah.  New album "Threshold" is out next week, and as you may have guessed, it's going to melt your face off.  Listen to "Jovian Sky" below and get the record here from Guruguru Brain.

Khana Bierbood

Western pop culture has pretty much invaded every corner of the globe now, and will probably only continue to do so as the world gets more and more connected.  And while there are certainly pros and cons to this movement of culture, i have to say that i love, love, love different countries' interpretations of Western psychedelic rock.  They're generally more faithful to their forebears, but often better and more original than the sound they're aping.  Take Thailand band Khana Bierbood for instance.  Their debut full-length album, "Strangers From the Far East," could have been plucked right out of the '60s, and yet they sound leaps and bounds ahead.  Listen to the garagey "Plankton Bloom" below and snag a copy of the record here from Guruguru Brain.

Minami Deutsch

Japanese krautrock...far out.  Psychedelic fuzz, bursts of stormy noise, and a motorik beat to tie it all together, the sophomore record from Minami Deutsch is equal parts brain melting and meditation.  Listen to "I've Seen a U.F.O." below and get the "With Dim Light" LP here via Guruguru Brain.

Kikagaku Moyo

Fuzzy, sprawling, sunburned psych jams are the order of the day from Japan's Kikagaku Moyo, and their recently released "Stone Garden" EP.  The band traverses familiar sounds, pairing western psychedelia and eastern mysticism, but do it in an intoxicating, transcendent way, caressing ear drums and brain folds.  Listen to "Nobakitani" below and get the album from Guruguru Brain.
