Daily Jam - 君の愛に背を向けて

I have been exploring a ton of Japanese music over the last couple of months: film scores, jazz, psych, city pop, and on and on.  And i've gotta say i'm loving it, kind of similar to when i discovered all those Italian film score composers and library session musicians a decade or so back.  Anyhoo, here's a jazzy piece of music from composer Yuji Ohno taken from the film "Proof of the Wild," or "Never Give Up" as it's known in other regions.  Listen to the smooth and sultry "君の愛に背を向けて," translated as "Turning My Back on Your Love," below, our Daily Jam.

Captain Murphy

Last night i was lucky enough to get out an see the new kung fu movie "The Furious."  To put it bluntly, it ruled.  And there's some truly excellent fight choreography throughout.  Anyhoo, the closing credits features a new track from Flying Lotus hip-hop alter-ego Captain Murphy.  Check out "Mudhole," featuring additional production from Little Snake, below and download it here from Brainfeeder.

Daily Jam - J.A.R. (Jason Andrew Relva)

Anybody remember that movie "Angus" from the '90s?  That one about the nerdy kid self-conscious about his weight.  George C. Scott plays the grandpa.  James Van Der Beek (pre-Dawson) plays an asshole.  Anyone?  Anyway, the soundtrack had a bunch of '90s alt-rock on it, like this one from Green Day.  Listen to "J.A.R. Xiu Xiu

A few years ago, long-running experimental band Xiu Xiu paid tribute to David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti by covering the music from "Twin Peaks."  This July, they give a nod to Lynch once again with "Eraserhead Xiu Xiu," a new live concert with an accompanying film and album.  Listen to their surreal take on Peter Ivers' "In Heaven" below and pre-order the LP here from Polyvinyl Records.

John Carpenter

August brings us new music from John Carpenter with the forthcoming release of "Cathedral."  And not just that, the album serves as a soundtrack of sorts to a new graphic novel of same name, based on a dream Carpenter had in 2024.  It's probably the closest thing we'll get to a new John Carpenter movie, so consider us stoked.  Check out "Lord of the Underground" below and pre-order here from Sacred Bones.

The whole "KPop Demon Hunters" thing is not my bag.  Not even slightly.  It's not my boys' thing either.  My wife, on the other hand, absolutely loves it.  All that being said, if i happen to hear "Golden" from the movie's protagonist K-pop trio Huntr/x, it will be in my head for days and days and days.  And now it can be in yours too.  Listen below, our Daily Jam.

The Empress

The Empress is the groove laden, library sounds homage project of Paul Elliot (Pleasurewood) and Paul Osborne (Project Gemini).  The duo's upcoming new album "Fortune Teller" feels like a fuzzy, mystical soundtrack to an Italian crime drama or giallo.  Check out "Switch Blade" below and pre-order the LP here from Library of the Occult.

Daily Jam - I Celebrate Myself

I love how so many notorious Italian movies are accompanied by the lush and gorgeous film scores.  Joe D'Amato's eroti-gore entry "Emanuelle in America" fits that bill perfectly with a wonderful soundtrack from composer Nico Fidenco.  Check out the lyrical version of the film's theme song, also called "I Celebrate Myself," as performed by Italian prog band Harmonium.  Listen below, our Daily Jam.

Daily Jam - Le Sacre du Printemps

A little over a decade ago, the Brian Jonestown Massacre released "Musique de Film Imagine," an imaginary soundtrack in homage and tribute to the French directors and films of the '50s and '60s.  It's excellent and certainly fits right into my wheelhouse.  Check out the Asia Argento assisted "Le Sacre du Printemps" below, our Daily Jam.

Man Man

Man, it's been a long time since i've thought about Man Man.  But here we are.  Way back in 2020, the LA based artist recorded "So It Goes" for the video game "Cyberpunk 2077" under the moniker Fingers & The Outlaws.  And now, it finally gets a proper and official release from Sub Pop.  Listen to the dusty, country punk folk track below and download it here.

Laurel Halo

LA experimental electronic artist Laurel Halo is providing the score to visual artist Julian Charriere's new film "Midnight Zone."  The movie follows the path of a Fresnel lighthouse lens descending through the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone, a remote stretch of the Pacific Ocean.  For the score, Halo creates a fittingly sparse and abyssal drone, like falling in slow motion into the unknown.  Check out the album opening "Sunlight Zone" below and grab the LP here from Awe.

Fever Ray

I have not had a chance to see Maggie Gyllenhaal's "The Bride!" yet, but i have heard some of the soundtrack, and it's pretty damn cool, featuring a score from Icelandic composer Hildur Gudnadottir and a couple of new original tracks from Swedish experimental electronic artist Fever Ray (Karin Dreijer formerly of The Knife).  Check out the latter's "Wrong Flower" below and pre-order a copy of the vinyl release here from Waxwork Records.
