Fucked Up

June brings us the release of the second part of Fucked Up's "Grass Can Moves Stones" with "Year of the Monkey."  Combined with last year's "Year of the Goat" and the later to be released "Year of the Rooster," this whole project is looking to be the band's magnum opus, an absolutely epic concept album.  Check out the massive "Looking for Heaven and Not Finding It" below, pre-order the download here from the band, and keep looking here at Tankcrimes for the impending physical release (March 24th).

Chat Pile

Oklahoma hardcore punk/black metal/screamo band hybrid dropped a new 7" on Friday that i missed out on whilst working all weekend.  The A-side is a beast and the B-side is a cover of an old Nirvana song.  Check out both "Masks" and the "Sifting" cover below and download them here from Sub Pop (the vinyl is already sold out).

Fucked Up

I don't know if i've ever come across a band that's quite as ambitious as Fucked Up is.  The Canadian hardcore punk group has been pushing and pulling its sound in a million different directions for well over 20 years now, with their ongoing Zodiac series being a perfect example.  That series of releases began in 2006 and will be culminating with the final three installments over the next year, ending on the 20th anniversary.  Said installments will serve as basically one giant opera of sorts called "Grass Can Move Stones."  The first segment is "Year of the Goat," and the opening epic "Long Ago Gardens" is phenomenal.  Listen below, and keep an eye on Tankcrimes Records over the next 12 months for the vinyl releases.

Daily Jam - Words Come Back (Piano)

One of the artists i've been fortunate enough to discover this year is '80s Maryland hardcore punk and proto-emo band The Hated.  Much thanks to the good folks at Numero Group for reissuing the band's brief but stellar output, a highlight of which is demo piano version of the song "Words Come Back."  Check it out below, our Daily Jam.

Hidden Mothers

Maybe it's too early in the morning for this kind of noise, but it's hard to care when the noise rules as much as it does.  Enter Sheffield band Hidden Mothers, whose mix of post-hardcore vocals, black metal guitars, and post-rock aesthetic makes for a both brutal and soaring sonic experience.  New album "Erosion / Avulsion" is out in November on Church Road Records.  Pre-order it here and listen to album opener "Defanged" below.

Chat Pile

Here's some blistering new music from Oklahoma City's Chat Pile.  Check out "I Am a Dog Now" below and pre-order the upcoming "Cool World" LP here from The Flenser.  Weirdly enough, i'm pretty sure i've totally driven by that exact spot on the cover art.

Fucked Up

It feels like a miracle that Canadian hardcore punk band Fucked Up are still making music all these years later.  It's been over two decades!  And they're still just as bombastic, as emotional, and as inventive as ever.  The band's latest, "Another Day," drops in August.  Check out "Stimming" below and pre-order the album here (download) or here (vinyl) from the band.

Daily Jam - Year of the Tiger

I love a long song.

Canadian hardcore punk band (but oh so much more than that) Fucked Up’s “Year of the Tiger” is a long song. And a stellar one at that.

The fifth in the band’s series of 12” singles inspired by the signs of the Chinese Zodiac, 2012’s “Year of the Tiger” soars, a steady riff that just builds and builds, with shifts in direction and instrumentation, gentle piano bits played alongside wailing guitars, Damian Abraham’s guttural snarl backed by the soothing singing vocals of guest contributors Katie Stelmanis (of Austra) and Annie-Claude Deschenes (of Duchess Says), and even an appearance from filmmaker Jim Jarmusch. The song is an exuberant epic, a 15-minute blast and flash of melodic drama that sounds like Jim Steinman writing and producing a track for Black Flag in some warped alternate dimension. I suppose that should be expected from a band that released a double album rock opera the year prior.

Fucked Up tend to flex their more ambitious sonic ideas on the Zodiac singles, experimenting with a larger audio palette to varying degrees of success, but end up with the veritable homerun with “Year of the Tiger.”

And who doesn’t like tigers? My son wanted to be one for Halloween eight years ago. So should we all.
