Xiu Xiu

A few years ago, long-running experimental band Xiu Xiu paid tribute to David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti by covering the music from "Twin Peaks."  This July, they give a nod to Lynch once again with "Eraserhead Xiu Xiu," a new live concert with an accompanying film and album.  Listen to their surreal take on Peter Ivers' "In Heaven" below and pre-order the LP here from Polyvinyl Records.

Violet Grohl

I was hesitant to post this new track from Violet Grohl because of the whole nepotism thing.  But then i relented.  It's not her fault who her dad is.  And her new track, "What's Heaven Without You," is both inspired by and dedicated to David Lynch.  And i'm a sucker for David Lynch.  Check out the dark and dreamy track below and download it here.

Jay Reatard & Lindsay Shutt

Years and years ago, the late great Jay Reatard recorded a cover of "In Heaven (Lady in the Radiator Song)" from David Lynch's "Eraserhead" with LA graphic designer Lindsay Shutt.  For the longest time, it was only available to listen to on YouTube or other bootlegged resources.  Well no more.  The good folks at Volar Records are finally releasing it on 7" with Cody Blanchard of Shannon and the Clams covering the Ramones' "I Don't Wanna Go Down to the Basement" on the B-side.  Listen to the track below and pre-order the record here.

Absolutely gutted.  David Lynch was the kind of artist that others will forever attempt to emulate.  Me included.  He seemed to understand the duality of man, both the good and the evil, the beautiful and the terrible, better than anyone else i can think of.  There will never be another quite like him.  RIP David Lynch.

Dumb Numbers

Dumb Numbers is the noise rock project of LA artist Adam Harding.  His latest release, which dropped today, is a spooky cover of a spooky song, "In Heaven" from David Lynch's "Eraserhead."  The track features an assist from Dale Crover and Thor Harris.  Check it out below and download it here from Joyful Noise Recordings.

Marissa Nadler Covers David Lynch

To celebrate 15(!) years of releasing excellent music, Sacred Bones is set to release a new compilation in May called "Todo Muere SBXV" which consists of a slew of its artists covering one another's songs.  I've got to admit that i'm very interested to hear Thou, Emma Ruth Rundle, and Mizmor take on Zola Jesus's "Night."  But in the meanwhile, i'll just let Marissa Nadler's gorgeous take on David Lynch's "Cold Wind Blowin'" tide me over until then.  Check it out below and pre-order the compilation here.

Noveller - Wrapped in Plastic

LA experimental artist Noveller comes back to "Twin Peaks" for more inspiration with her "Wrapped in Plastic" single.  Following up September's "Red Room" where she covered the show's theme song, this time around she tackles two themes for different characters with gorgeous and haunting takes on "Laura Palmer's Theme" and "Audrey's Dance."  Check out the former below and download both songs here.

David Lynch Featuring Jack Cruz

Monday saw the surprise release of a David Lynch short film called "What Did Jack Do?" on Netflix in which the director interrogates a monkey named Jack Cruz.  The short featured the song "The Flame of Love," sung by Jack, and Sacred Bones has seen to it to release it and another song for our listening consumption.  Bask in the song's glory below and pre-order the 7" here.

Daily Jam - Mysteries of Love

The story goes that when David Lynch was making "Blue Velvet," he tried to get the rights to This Mortal Coil's version of "Song to the Siren," a tune originally penned by Tim Buckley, to use in his film.  He couldn't get them.  So instead, he and Angelo Badalamenti wrote "Mysteries of Love" and recruited Julee Cruise to provide the dreamy, ghostly vocals.  And i'm pretty glad it all worked out that way.  Here's "Mysteries of Love," our Daily Jam.

Flying Lotus and David Lynch

LA producer Flying Lotus has a new record coming out next month, and aside from featuring artists like Toto y Moi, Shabazz Palaces, and more, the album also features David Lynch doing some spoken word stuff.  Watch the weird and kind of unsettling video for the weird and kind of unsettling "Fire Is Coming" below and pre-order the upcoming "Flamagra" LP here from Warp.

Metavari

Electronic artist Metavari utilizes elements of drone, IDM, synth wave, and ambient house to craft pieces of sound that could perfectly accompany some imaginary film in your head.  But, sometimes he actually does that could play alongside actual, real life movies.  Newest album "Absurda," which came out in some limited quantities today for Record Store Day, was inspired by the early short films of David Lynch and it's as weird and wonderful and sometimes spooky as it needs to be.  Listen to "Absurd Encounter with Fear" below and download the whole thing from the artist here (name your price).
