It's been a spell since i last thought about Denton, Texas band Midlake and their catchy, mellow mix of'70s folk and soft rock. Former member Tim Smith has a new album coming out next month with his latest project Harp, the duo of himself and wife Kathi Zung. The pair's upcoming "Albion" LP is a wistful and moody mix of folk and '80s synth pop that reminds me a little of the kind of stuff that Indiana band Odawas was making 15 years ago. Beautiful stuff. You may not think you need a jazz harpist in your life, but trust me when i say without a hint of irony, you need a jazz harpist in your life. At least that's the case with Dorothy Ashby. Considered one of the most accomplished yet underloved artists to come out of the American jazz scene, i was introduced to her 1970 album "The Rubaiyat of Dorothy Ashby" by chance a couple months ago and was completely blown away.
