Edward Scissorhands

It's maybe a little weird that there's an Edinburgh producer who decided to call himself Edward Scissorhands, but all names aside, the music is cool.  New album "Mere Mortals" is a strange collection of instrumental hip-hop that pulls its sounds and samples from post-punk and industrial rock rather than funk or soul or psych or whatever.  It makes for some total metal machine music.  Check out the album opening "The Gatekeeper" below and get the record here.

Sonic Advent Calendar: Day 6 - Edward Scissorhands Main Title

Maybe it's the whimsical nature of his compositions, or the face that when paired with Tim Burton, he's often scoring music for Gothic and wintry scenes, but Danny Elfman's film soundtracks always remind me of Christmas time...the score for Burton's "Edward Scissorhands" in particular.  Listen to the "Main Title" below, Day 6 of the Sonic Advent Calendar.

Sonic Advent Calendar: Day 23 - Ice Dance

Not a Christmas song per se, but it's impossible for me to separated Tim Burton's "Edward Scissorhands" from the season, and Danny Elfman's wonderful, beautiful score in particular.  "Ice Dance" has always been one of my favorites, the sound of looking at Christmas lights as the snow falls around you.

Christmas Movie Trailer Week: Edward Scissorhands

Long before Tim Burton was a hollowed out shell of himself, he actually made good movies...good, quirky movies that felt helmed by an auteur.  Burton had a voice, and an aesthetic, and some recurring themes addressed in all of his films.  And he actually made a couple of near-flawless classics in his early career as well ("Beetlejuice" and "Ed Wood," i'm looking in your direction), but my very favorite will probably always be 1990's "Edward Scissorhands."  It finds Tim Burton at his Tim-Burtoniest, has one of the most amazing film scores ever put to tape, courtesy of Danny Elfman, and it takes place at Christmas.  Watch the trailer below.
