Daily Jam (October Edition) - Like Rats

Daily Jam - Silver

There’s always that one song that serves as your entry point to an entire discography of any particular artist. The inciter. The catalyst. The first. That song can be wonderful and special in its own right, as it is the harbinger of music to come, but every so often it maintains. It keeps you carrying a torch for it. It stays firmly ranked among your favorites, never to be unseated by any other.

Jesu’s “Silver,” the title track from the band’s 2006 EP, is that song for me.

“Silver” was my introduction to Justin K. Broadrick and all of the lowness, the heaviness, and the beauty found in every note of his Jesu project. I have been a completist ever since, but nothing has ever topped those initial six minutes and change. There’s a certain shogaze-meets-heavy metal motif going on, both on the song and in much of Jesu’s other work, along with an almost cosmic feel that lends a sense of majesty and gravitas to the whole affair. “Silver” feels dense and layered, but also sprawling and epic, like you’re soaring high over existence or falling weightless forever.

The last two minutes are glory defined. I’ll never be able to get enough of it.

Loud As Giants

Loud As Giants is the droney, noisy, experimental post rock collaboration between Belgian musician and composer Dirk Serries and Jesu and Godflesh main man Justin K Broarick.  The duo's new "Empty Homes" album is out at the end of the month.  Pre-order the download here or the LP here from Consouling Sounds, and listen to sink-into-the-floor sounds of "Monument" below.

Aside from the most welcome new album from Hum yesterday, we also got word that a new mini-LP from Justin K. Zonal

Justin Broadrick (of Jesu, Godflesh and more) and Kevin Martin (of The Bug) have joined forces for a new collaborative project called Zonal.  Dubby, droney, noisy, unsettling, and spooky, the duo have created a slow and low menacing kind of sound.  Listen to "Cage Version" below, download it and another track here, and be on the lookout for a full-length album sometime in the future on Relapse.

JK Flesh

May brings us a new EP from Justin Broadrick's dark electronic and industrial project JK Flesh.  "In the Pit" is described as dread techno, i'm all for that moniker.  Listen to the title track below and pre-order it here.

Jesu / Sun Kil Moon

So, Mark Kozelek is an asshole.  There's really no denying that.  But he's still a talented dude, and he's got a collaborative album in the works with Jesu's Justin K. Broadrick due in January on Caldo Verde/Rough Trade.  I'm expecting it to knock my socks off.  Anyway, a first taste has surfaced, the interestingly and totally Kozelek-sounding titled song "America's Most Wanted Mark Kozelek and John Dillinger."  It sounds like a more atmospheric Sun Kil Moon, but i'm game for that.  Listen to the track here.

Godflesh - New Dark Ages

And so, football season has officially begun, so let me get this out of my system...for now...or at least for the next few days.  FOOTBALL!!!  Okay.  Now that that's out of the way, i feel some intense, head-breaking, ferocious mood music is in order before i watch my Longhorns tonight.  How about this awesome new track from the legendary Godflesh?  "New Dark Ages" is an angry industrial rager and comes from the forthcoming "A World Lit Only By Fire," out in October on Avalanche.  Listen and rattle below.

New music from Godflesh

Though i'm still kicking myself for missing last month's Godflesh show when the group came through Austin, i can take some solace that new music from the legendary industrial/metal band is on the horizon.  The "Decline and Fall" EP is due on Avalanche at the end of June, but in the meantime, you can listen to album opener "Ringer" below.  Hooray!

Jesu - Infinity

Justin K. Broadrick's Jesu offerings are a wonderful mix of beauty and heaviness.  Very often, the songs veer into emotional and epic territory, a sprawling bombast of layered guitars, pounding drums, and echoed, wistful vocals spread out over an ongoing, melancholy melody.  And thus, the aptly titled "Infinity."  Listen to the vinyl-only mix of the track below, and then go here to get the album both digitally and on good, old-fashioned black vinyl.

I hate to be late to the party, especially when it comes to any project Justin K. Broadrick is involved in.  His loud and melodic shoegaze metal act Jesu is releasing a new album next week via Avalanche called "Everyday I get Closer to the Light from Which I Came."  Great title.  Great band.  Great music.  Take a listen to "Homesick" below and get the album here.

Justin K.
