Stephen O'Malley

Sunn O))) cofounder Stephen O'Malley has a new solo drone album heading our way in February with the upcoming "Spheres Collapser."  Side A track "Phase I Organ" sounds like an emergency tone that gradually becomes the soundtrack to a world slowly disintegrating, dust and atoms spreading across the emptiness of space.  So pretty much a soundtrack to where things are already headed in 2026.  Great work everyone.  Check it out below and pre-order the LP here from XKatedral.

Daily Jam (October Edition) - Orakulum

No one does scary, eerie, foreboding drone metal quite like Sunn O))) does.  Here's a creepy, menacing track from their 2007 album "Oracle."  Listen to "Orakulum" below, our spooky Daily Jam.

Stephen O'Malley

Here's a sprawling and ominous new track from Sunn O))) member and experimental artist Stephen O'Malley.  "But Remember What You Have Had" is over 30 minutes of drone, hiss, and hum, a veritable harbinger of doom...or the sound of a universe ever expanding.  Check it out below and get the LP here from Portraits GRM.

The Lord + Petra Haden

Well here's a bitchin' collaboration i would never have thought of.  "Devotional" is the new LP from The Lord, AKA Greg Anderson of Sunn O))), Goatwhore, and Southern Lord Records, and singer and violinist Petra Haden of That Dog and The Rentals fame.  Haden provides lyric-less vocals over Anderson's drone and metal guitar tones to glorious, delirious, almost religious effect.  Check out the album closing "The End of Absence" below and get the record here from Southern Lord.

Sunn O)))

Did you miss out on Sunn O)))'s latest album, the Steve Albini recorded "Life Metal" last weekend on Record Store Day?  Well, fear not.  That was just a special early release preceding the album's actual release date next week.  So those of you who couldn't get your hands on the noisy, droney metal record last Saturday can still be getting a hold of it soon.  Listen to "Troubled Air" below, pre-order the digital version here from the band, and get the physical record from Southern Lord next Friday.

Record Store Day 2019 Recommendations

We're just over a week away from one of my favorite days of the year, and probably the only one where i openly embrace overt capitalism and commerce.  You know what i'm talking about.  It's almost Record Store Day.  Anyway, keeping up with what i've done the last few years, here are a handful of recommendations for you to keep in mind if you go out into the melee.

Francois de Roubaix - "Les Levres Rouges" 7"
Also known as "Daughters of Darkness," an erotic French vampire film from 1971, this 7" release features a couple of song's from Francois de Roubaix's score.  And it's an intoxicating listen.

Aaron Lupton and Jeff Szpirglas - "Blood on Black Wax" HC Book
Weirdly enough, my next recommendation is a book from a couple of "Rue Morgue" magazine writers about horror soundtracks.  This one is right up my alley, tackling old school releases as well as the wave of reissues over the last 10 years.  And, this RSD special edition of the book comes with a 7" record featuring music from Paul Zaza, Carl Zittrer, and some disco tunes originally featured in "Prom Night."  I'm stoked for this one.  Shake your booty to "Love Me Til I Die" below.

Green Jelly - "Cereal Killer" LP
This one is just me wanting to feel like an immature, snot nosed teenager again, as the silly and grimy punk jams of Green Jelly's "Cereal Killer" were a big part of my early adolescence.

"The Crow" OST LP
While the movie has really not held up, i still love the soundtrack as much now as i did when i was 15 years old.  At the time, it was an amazing allotment of '90s alt-rock bands slinging new tunes or deep cuts, and that lineup is still stellar 25 years later.  And i think you could make a pretty solid argument that "Burn" is the best Cure song of anything post-"Disintegration."

Sunn O))) - "Life Metal" LP
New music from experimental drone doom metal band Sunn O))) is always something to get behind, and this time around, the band's latest "Life Metal" gets an early release on Record Store Day.  Hazaa!  Check the preview.

So there you go.  There are plenty of other great releases to try and score (The Charlatans, "Twin Peaks" season 2 soundtrack, Alice Clark, etc.), but these five are the ones i can't wait to get my grubby little hands on.  Check the full list here and have fun everybody!

Sunn O))) - Kannon

Hey guys, Sunn O)))'s got a new record out, and it's their first non-collaborative effort in 6 years.  Hooray!  Get "Kannon" from Southern Lord and listen to the cold and droning album opener "Kannon 1" below.  It sounds like winter.

Scott Walker and Sunn O))) - Brando video

One of the more surprising (and amazing) collaborations to come out in recent years, the new album "Soused" from legendary experimental artist and crooner Scott Walker and drone metal band Sunn O))), is as huge, and dark, and intense as you'd ever imagine.  It's going to take several listens to really grasp the whole thing.  But while we're all doing that, watch the hauntingly beautiful video for album opener "Brando" below...and then go get the album from 4AD.

Scott Walker and Sunn O)))

Earlier today, 4AD released a link to this website...with the words "Scott O)))" in glorious black, white, and red.  They have since confirmed that legendary artist Scott Walker is make a collaborative album with drone metal band Sunn O))).  This is an unbelievably cool announcement, and a record is due by year's end.  I'll keep you posted.

Sunn O))) and Ulver

What happens when you combine the talents and sounds of two heavy weight ambient-drone-progressive-black metal bands like Sunn O))) and Ulver?  Magic.  Pure bliss.  A creeping, hypnotic journey to the darkened nether worlds.  Or...just a really bitchin' record.  "Terrestrials" will be out next week via Southern Lord Records.  Listen to a sample from "Eternal Return" below and go grab the album from the bands here.

Ensemble Pearl

Stephen O'Malley from Sunn O))) + Bill Herzog from Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter + Atsuo and Michio Kurihara from Boris + classical/experimental violist Eyvind Kang = Ensemble Pearl.  I don't think any more explanation is necessary.  It's awesome!  Listen to "Painting on a Corpse" below and grab the self-titled album from Drag City.
