Daily Jam - Om

A couple of weeks back, i went to the fall edition of the Austin Record Convention, easily one of my favorite things to do.  And while i certainly came home with some great stuff, i'm afraid i left something behind that should have made its way back with me, John Coltrane's 1967 album "Om."  It's a kinetic, frenetic free jazz freak-out, and i'm all the worse for not bringing it home.  Anyway, if you've got half an hour and want to get weird for a little while, dig on "Om" below in all its epic glory, our Daily Jam.

Moor Mother

It's pretty impossible to pin down Philadelphia artist Moor Mother into any particular genre, and that continues with the upcoming new album "The Great Bailout."  Check out the dense, layered, and sprawling new track "Guilty," featuring Lonnie Holley and Raia Was, a 10-minute long sparse work of free jazz, poetry, and hypnotic sonic weirdness.  Listen below and pre-order the album here from Anti- Records.

Fusione

After checking out Italian psych-jazz-etc. band Al Doum & The Faryds this morning, i also came across Fusione, a one-off improvisational collection of sounds created by members of the band.  The project features a lot of the same psych and free jazz that band makes with their main band, but it's all a little more chaotic here, a little stranger.  Check out "Track 2" below and get the whole thing here from Black Sweat Records.

Al Doum & the Faryds

Finding myself still sifting through the sounds of 2021 that escaped my notice, and tripping out a little bit on the cosmic freakout of Italy's Al Doum & The Faryds.  The group's "Freaky People" dropped back in November and features an eclectic mix of psychedelia, free jazz, Afro-Latin rock, and spirituality.  Check out "Universe pt. 1" below and get the LP here from Black Sweat Records.

Irreversible Entanglements

Even if you have only a passing interest in jazz, the stuff getting released by International Anthem is almost obscenely good.  And the latest is the third LP from New York/Philadelphia/Washington DC free-jazz outfit Irreversible Entanglements.  "Open the Gates" is a blast and swirl of sound and textures that feels like the birth of something enormous.  Check out the album opening title track below and pre-order the record here.
