I will never be able to quite explain the hold that French psych pop has over me, particular that with female vocals. It soothes my soul. And so we have the latest release from French artist Mélanie. New album "Cri D'Amour" is full of moody and melancholy chansons that put me into that right dreamy state. And as a bonus, it features some percussion from the late, great drummer Tony Allen. Just found out we lost one of the greatest drummers on the planet, legendary afrobeat artist Tony Allen. He was 79. RIP Tony Allen. Here's a song he did a few years a go with Blur's Damon Albarn.
Over the last few years, Damon Albarn has been reviving all of his former projects, issuing new albums and material from the likes of Blue and Gorillaz. And now to complete the trifecta, the sophomore release from supergroup The Good, The Bad & The Queen is finally coming to us next month, some 11 years later. Consisting of Albarn, The Clash's Paul Simonon, The Verve's Simon Tong, and legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen and featuring production from Tony Visconti, the band's upcoming "Merrie Land" LP is a meditation of sorts on British-ness in a post-Brexit world. Legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen has played with an array of different musicians over the years. One of those musicians is Blur/Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn. Allen drummed in such Albarn led bands as The Good, The Bad, and The Queen and Rocket Juice and The Moon. With new solo album "Film of Life" due in October on JazzVillage, Allen has recruited Albarn for vocals on the stunning, summery track "Go Back." Listen to it below.
