I've been a little obsessed with these guys since seeing them perform at SXSW last month, and devouring any and every little piece of music they leak out there...of which there is not much. Anyway, Black Midi's "bmbmbm" was the first single they put out last year, and it's a hypnotic mix of math rock and post punk with occasional blasts of noise. Their drummer, Morgan Simpson, is amazing, and lead singer Geordie Greep's weird affectations when he says the word "purpose" will stick in your head all day. Your Daily Jam...
This morning brings us a new jam from UK band, and SXSW darlings, Black Midi. "Crow's Perch" falls in line with the band's almost indescribable mix of post punk, math rock, funk, tension, and spaced out weirdness. Watch the video below and go get the single here via Rough Trade.
I was fortunate enough to catch Black Midi today at SXSW, a UK band with a shitload of hype behind them that proved to be completely warranted. The band does a kind of post punk/math rock thing with vocals reminiscent of The Fall's Mark E. Smith or maybe a more menacing Fred Schneider of The B-52s. Angular, noisy, chaotic, and complex changing time signatures paired with a natural aloofness means we're going to see a lot of ink on these guys over the next few months. Their online presence is minimal at best, but it seems they've signed with Rough Trade, so that may be changing in the near future. As per usual at SXSW, Monday and Tuesday did not adequately prepare me for how crowded this thing can get. Monday and Tuesday are always more chill, with fewer elbows to bump into and more room to spread out. That being said, today was still fun, if not hotter and a tad more claustrophobic (i skipped a set by Sir Babygirl because the small, packed room was just too much). I saw two absolutely amazing sets from CHAI and Black Midi, hopefully not the last. Here's some pics...
