Childish Gambino & Beck

Childish Gambino and a rapping Beck!  Holla!  Listen to "Silk Pillow" below, and i promise never to say "holla" ever, ever again.

Alice Cohen

The wonderful Alice Cohen has been making music for three decades now in various guises.  June sees the release of her most recent foray into lo-fi electronic bedroom pop.  Go over to see the triumphant return of Olde English Spelling Bee and pre-order the album.  In the meantime, you can listen to album opener "Cascading Keys" below.

Gary War

Lo-fi electro-noodling weirdo Gary War is back with another batch of eclectic, eccentric oddities for your aural amusement.  Look for the "Jared's Lot" LP from Spectrum Spools in July and listen to the bizarro "Superlifer" below.

Llaiyaraaja

Western influenced world jams always come out sounding just a little bit off...and in the best possible way.  Check out the sampler of music from Bombay Connection's latest compilation, a smorgasbord of 80's synths and beats from Indian films composed by South Indian musician Llaiyaraaja.  "Fire Star:  Synth-Pop and Electro-Funk from Tamil Films 1985-1989" is everything you would expect it to be...absolutely insane and incredibly awesome.  Get the CD here, and look for the vinyl soon, and listen to the sampler below.

The Child of Lov

I don't know who The Child of Lov is, but the dude has posted a fantastic demo for a track called "Heal" that combines elements of funk and soul and blends it all together into lo-fi nirvana.  It is a demo after all.  Looking forward to hearing more in the future.  Listen to the jam below.

Fight Bite

Check out this gorgeous new jam from Fight Bite, the side project of Neon Indian member Leanne Macomber.  "Charlotte Iris" comes from her new self-titled album.  Listen below and grab the whole thing over at the band's bandcamp page.  Lovely dream pop at its finest.  It's like the final song of some sad movie.

Dude York

Start your weekend with some good, old-fashioned, jangly power pop.  The dudes from Dude York are actually from Seattle, but they got the summertime grooves to kick start the season.  Look for the "Escape from Dude York" EP from The Sound of Sweet Nothing and listen to "Fuck City" below.

Killer Mike

"R.A.P. Music" is the latest album from Killer Mike featuring the always excellent production of El-P.  The guy is a phenomenal rapper, and he's pissed.  And some of that's been missing from hip-hop as a genre lately.  Think Ice Cube 20 years ago and you're getting close.  This one kind of came out of nowhere and bit me in the ass.  Get it from Williams Street Records (a la Adult Swim) and listen to "Reagan" below.  Not to pun, but it's killer.

Action Bronson

Yeah, i'm two months late on this.  I blame my dog for needing to be walked all the time.  Anyway, i always seem to dig on the jams created by fat, bald, hairy guys (see Fucked Up), and the "Blue Chips" mixtape from Queens, New York native Action Bronson is no different.  Working with producer Party Supplies, the two have crafted a pretty awesome mix of old school rap laid over ton of uncleared samples ranging across the board in style.  It's the kind of album that makes you remember how awesome "Paul's Boutique" is.  Listen to "9-24-11" below and download the mixtape here for free.

Spacin'

Sometimes it's best to just let the throbbing jams wash over you like so much spilled beer.  Philadelphia's Spacin' is the side project of Birds of Maya member Jason Killinger, and their slurred, warbled space-garage-rock tunes are the perfect thing to wind down a long day to.  Pounding drums.  Pulsing bass riffs.  And that aforementioned slurred and warbled guitar.  This is the soundtrack to drinking a six-pack.  Listen to "Empty Mind" below and grab the "Deep Thuds" LP from Richie Records.

Heinrich Dressel

I don't know what your plans look like for the rest of the week, but if it involves breaking political prisoners out of a high tech jail that used to be a major US city in order to locate a secret device that will destroy all computer communications for the foreseeable future, OR raiding a television network's headquarters in order to blow up the satellite that's been transmitting alien subliminal messages directly into our brains, then i have the soundtrack to your week.  Heinrich Dressel is the performance name of Italian minimalist musician Valerio Lombardozzi.  As far as i can ascertain, he is from the future.  Listen to "The Black Radiant Sky" below and grab the "Sighing Melodies Thru The Graves" record from Mannequin.

Wreathes

Wreathes is the new project from Nate (Brave Mysteries), Troy Schafer (Rain Drinkers, Kinit Her), and Clay Ruby (Burial Hex, Horrid Red).  They sound like a bunch of former Soviet officers meeting with a group of Druid priests in an abandoned castle, drinking bottle after bottle of 100 proof vodka, and then making music to their new imagined gods, demanding more vodka.  As you can imagine, it's awesome.  Listen to the 7" version of "The Reigns" below and grab the self-titled LP from Pesanta Urfolk.

S U R V I V E

S U R V I V E is Austin's answer to the current plethora of musicians and acts out there drawing inspiration from analog synthesizers and 1980's sci-fi horror flicks.  Their newest self-titled album is available from Mannequin, but you can listen to "Omniverse" below.

Because you demanded it...8-Bit Radiohead!

These are just entirely too much fun not to post.  Youtube user QuintonSung turns Radiohead's "OK Computer" and "Kid A" into soundtracks for Nintendo games that never existed.  I can dig it.  Listen to both 8-Bit albums below.

DOOM & Oh No

We are big fans of anything DOOM (formerly MF DOOM) gets his grimy, little metal-fingered hands on.  The man's gruff, raspy flow just makes me want to hit a bong.  Check out "3 Dollars," the rapper/producer's collaboration with Oh No below, and then grab the 5" record from Stones Throw.  Hazaa!

Cheap Curls

Side and solo project offshoots from current or former Dum Dum or Vivian Girls seem to role out every other month or so.  And that's awesome.  For the fans of occasionally surf-tinged, lo-fi, girl group garage rock, we just eat it up like so much hard candy.  Cheap Curls is the new project from former Dum Dum Girl Katie Serbian-Brouillette.  Listen to the toe-tapping "Jackie Oh" below and grab the 3-song 7" from Art Fag Records.  Go you!

Ether Island

From the ashes of the now defunct Mythical Beast comes the doom-drone-psyche-crunch of Ether Island (Corinne Sweeney and Jeremiah Cowlin).  The duo relocated to New Mexico and just let the desert blow and shine through their new jams.  Watch the still and trippy video for "Season of Risk" below and grab the 7" from Not Not Fun.

Stream Laurel Halo's "Quarantine"

You can stream Laurel Halo's new album "Quarantine" below in its entirety.  Hooray!  Look for it next month on Hyperdub.

MS MR

I'm not quite sure what this reminds me of.  There's a late 80's/early-mid 90's kind of vibe resonating through the whole tune, but i can't put my finger on it.  Anyway, new track "Hurricane" from New York duo MS MR is pretty catchy, and i'm really digging on the mile-a-minute video of a thousand different pics and clips.  I'm waiting for someone to slow it down and label everything in it.  Get to work internet!  In the meantime, you can watch the video below and look for the single from Iamsound/Chess Club in July.

"New" John Maus

John Maus is a favorite around here, and we're always excited to get new jams from him.  July will see the release of a rarities collection spanning 11 years of output.  Pretty solid.  Look for it from Ribbon Music and listen to "Mental Breakdown" below.

Witch Mountain

Doom metal seems to flourish in the Pacific Northwest.  It's probably all the rain and lumberjacks.  Enter Portland's Witch Mountain, probably the first doom/stoner metal act i've heard with a female singer.  Uta Plotkin's soulful leads and harmonies over the usual metal growling and crunch adds an almost triumphant level to the jams. Good shit.  Listen to "Beekeeper" below and grab the album from Profound Lore.

Beach House

Okay Beach House, i'll pay attention to you.  You've always been one of those bands that i thought made pretty music, but that i usually filed in the boring category.  Little did i realize, they were perfecting their brand of dream pop with each consecutive album.  And so, we have "Bloom," the Baltimore duo's fourth record.  This is what they've been building towards, a collection of lush-sounding, lo-fi bedroom jams with nods towards Cocteau Twins and the dreamier side of Siouxsie and The Banshees that float around in your brain long after the record's done.  Way to go kids.  Listen to "Myth" below and grab the record from Sub Pop.

Innergaze

Let's take a trip back to the factory dance floors of the seedy nightlife of 1970's NYC and 1980's Chicago to bask in the glow of of the strobe lights and smoke and listen to the thumping rhythms of menacing drum machines and the Satanic majesty of darkwave synthesizers.  The dark, underbelly of techno music that birthed acts like Ministry and Skinny Puppy.  Keyboards and power tools.  It went away for awhile, but a new breed of artists are revisiting this computerized road to hell.  Brooklyn duo Innergaze get the pulse of the moment just right with their second LP "Mutual Dreaming."  Eight tracks that prove that taking a tab of ecstasy and playing with a synthesizer is still a good idea.  Listen to the title track below and grab the album from Minimal Wave/Cititrax.

Centipede Hz

In September, Animal Collective are set to release their follow up to 2009's excellent "Merriweather Post Pavillion."  So, take some acid and go HERE to watch the "trailer" for new album, "Centipede Hz."  And, check the tracklist below.

01 Moonjock
02 Today's Supernatural
03 Rosie Oh
04 Applesauce
05 Wide Eyed
06 Father Time
07 New Town Burnout
08 Monkey Riches
09 Mercury Man
10 Pulleys
11 Amanita

Lust For Youth

The Swedes know what they're doing when it comes to desolate, minimalist synth/industrial jams.  Maybe it's the cold.  Anyway, "Growing Seeds" is the latest from Lust For Youth, the now solo project from Hannes Norrvide.  The new LP is a smattering of cold, darkwave synthesizers and bleak, crunchy industrial mayhem, the soundtrack for driving through Europe at night.  Get the album from Avant! Records and listen to "Behind Curtains" below.

Turing Machine

"What Is The Meaning of What" is the latest album from Turing Machine, and their first in 8 years.  Initial recording began a few years ago, but came to a halt when drummer Jerry Fuchs passed away.  The remaining band members recruited friends and like minds to help finish off the record, and it's out now from Temporary Residence.  Thumping basement new-wave electro-disco jams coming straight at your face.  Listen to "Slave to The Algorithm" below.

Oneohtrix Point Never - I Only Have Eyes For You

I sure do love the synth and electronic tinkerings of Oneohtrix Point Never.  Mr. Lopatin never lets me down.  And it sure was nice of him to cover The Flamingos' classic "I Only Have Eyes For You."  Listen below.

Rosenkopf

Gothic industrial synth Krautrock jams with occasional bursts of gruff, screamed vocals akin to power tools shredding into cerebral cortex, New York trio Rosenkopf's self-titled debut has all the ingredients to get solid play around here.  It all reminds me of the seedy leather techno clubs of the early 90's that i never got to go to.  Get the record from Wierd (comes out May 15th) and listen to album opener "Burning Spirits" below.

Icona Pop

I probably should not like this song as much as i do, but dammit, this pop is infectious!  Watch the video for "I Love It" from Stockholm's own Icona Pop.  And i dare you not to wiggle your ass just a little bit.

Ultraista

Producer Nigel Godrich (Radiohead, Beck, and so many more) has teamed with LA drummer Joey Waronker and London artist Laura Bettison to form the new band Ultraista.  No word yet on an album, but you can check out their track "Smalltalk" below.

It's got a groovy My Bloody Valentine-goes-electro vibe to it.  Nice stuff.  Now check out the video.

Orcas

It's grey and rainy outside and the prevailing mood is a downcast one (although the momentary reprieve from the heat is greatly appreciated), so here's an atmospheric new song from Orcas, a collaboration between Benoit Pioulard and Rafael Anton Irisarri of The Sight Below.  "Carrion" slowly unfolds and creeps along with gentle piano keys and hushed vocals, while the layered guitar effects and synthesized ambience swirl through the mix.  This is music to stare blankly out into the world to.  Listen to "Carrion" below and look for the self-titled new album on Morr Music.

Horseback

Horseback's new LP, "Half Blood," is an ugly, twisting and sprawling mesh of Nordic black metal, American roots music, horror movie pastiches, and experimental tinkerings.  If that sounds like it could be a disaster, you're right, but these stoner metal kids pull it off in a big way.  It works.  Well.  Listen to "Arjuna" below, and pre-order the album from Relapse Records.

New Animal Collective

New Animal Collective news is always welcome round these parts, so here's two new jams from the band.  Listen to "Honeycomb" and "Gotham" on the player below and pre-order the new 7" here.  Hooray!

Future of The Left

Thank you Record Store Day for making me remember why i dug Mclusky so much.  The vinyl reissue of "Mclusky Do Dallas" was fantastic.  It also made me realize what we've been missing for the last few years.  Well, Future of The Left is a pretty good substitute.  Just a raucous.  Just as funny.  Just as abrasive.  New album "The Plot Against Common Sense" is due out soon from Xtra Mile, but in the meantime you can jam to "I Am The Least of Your Problems" below.

RIP Adam Yauch (MCA)

This breaks my heart.  Rest In Peace MCA.  I hate cancer.

And, since there's not really any somber Beastie Boys songs, here's the video for "So What Cha Want," a staple in the life of junior-high-Tommy.

Beak>

Portishead's Geoff Barrow has been a busy man of late, with his Quakers hip-hop project, a different album inspired by "Judge Dread," and some upcoming Portishead shows.  On top of this, he's a got a new album coming out in the summer from his awesome, quirky Beak> project.  Listen to "Yatton" below and look for the new LP ">>" from Invada in June.

Another Peaking Lights mixtape

Here's another Peaking Lights mixtape to tide you over until next month's release of new album, "Lucifer," from Mexican Summer.  Catch a glimpse of new jam "Beautiful Son" around the 32-minute mark.

Danny Brown

There's been enough written about Detroit rapper Danny Brown over the last year that i'd hardly be able to add anything to (well deserved) press and hype.  He's changing the game though.  The "XXX" mixtape came out last year, but just got the vinyl treatment from Fool's Gold for Record Store Day.  Hooray!  Check out the 3:33 remix of "Blunt After Blunt" below.
