Witch Egg
Thee Oh Sees' John Dwyer has a new project coming out in January because of course he does. The man does not rest. The man does not stop. It seems the project may or may not be called Witch Egg. It's the name of the record at the very least and features Nick Murray, Brad Caulkins, Tom Dolas, and Greg Coates, and going by first taste "Greener Pools," it's a mix of psych, prog, and jazz. Good stuff. Listen below, pre-order the digital release here, and be on the lookout for some vinyl from Castle Face.
Daily Jam - The Calvary Cross
Really kind of quietly and without much ado, Tortoise and Bonnie Prince Billy's 2006 collaborative cover album "The Brave and The Bold" is one of my favorite records. It just works on every level. And the highlight for me is their take on Richard and Linda Thompson's "The Calvary Cross." Check it out below, our Daily Jam.

Population II
Daily Jam - My Iron Lung
Just sitting here listening to "My Iron Lung" by Radiohead and getting all kinds of conflicted 10th grade feels. No big. Anyway, here's "My Iron Lung," our Daily Jam.

Arab Strap
Very cool. It looks like we're getting a new album from Arab Strap in March. Check out the very Arab Strap-sounding "Compersion Pt. 1" below and pre-order the upcoming "As Days Get Dark" LP here via Rock Action.
Daily Jam - Anyone Who Knows What Love Is (Will Understand)
Here's a classic from Irma Thomas on this rainy day in Central Texas. It's impossible to not like this song. Impossible i say. Listen to "Anyone Who Knows What Love Is (Will Understand)" below, our Daily Jam.

Daily Jam - If Not by Fire
Mandy More's "If Not by Fire" is one of those old, random songs i discovered a couple years back that i've been kind of obsessed with ever since, and has spawned a quest for vinyl that so far has turned up fruitless. Someday Mandy More. Someday. Listen below, our Daily Jam.
Small Black - Moon Killer Mixtape
Small Black's 2011 mixtape "Moon Killer," a groovy, chilled out synth classic with assists from Das Racist's Heems, is finally getting a physical release courtesy of 100% Electronica. Still dig this thing, and still dig that cover art ripped from Michael Mann's "The Keep." Check out the title track below and order the record here.

Going with some music by Broadcast today for no other reason than i just love Broadcast. Here's "Valerie," our Daily Jam. Have a happy Thanksgiving and please stay safe and smart out there.

Liturgy
Definitely some of the more out there stuff i've listened to the last couple of days, the latest album from experimental metal band Liturgy is a mix of classical music, jazz, and black metal. It's like listening to some kind of intense opera. Check out "SIHEYMN's Lament" below and order the "Origin of the Alimonies" LP here where you can check out the cover art. Normally i'd just post the album cover here but social media companies tend to lock my account when there's nudity involved. Post all the misleading articles about the election or COVID you want to, but God forbid somebody see an artful tit.
Daily Jam - Cloud Song
Day by day, just trying to keep stress and anxiety and depression away. Sometimes it's hard. Sometimes it's easy. Just gonna try and coast the next few days. Here's "Cloud Song" by The United States of America, our Daily Jam.

El Perro del Mar
I haven't thought about Swedish pop artist El Perro del Mar in spell, but she just released a new album called "Free Land." Listen to the groovy dreaminess of "White on White" below and order the record here via The Control Group/Valley of Search.
Daily Jam - Sing
It's a grey and rainy morning here in Central Texas, so i thought i would listen to some appropriately vibed music. Here's the dreamy, kinda eerie "Sing" from Slowdive, our Daily Jam.

The Galileo 7
Ooh, sometimes i just need that crunchy mix of power pop and garage rock. Hook it straight to my veins. Here's "The Day the World Turned Day-Glo" from UK band The Galileo 7. Check it out below and get the "Decayed" LP here.
Daily Jam - Good Enough
It has always tickled me that Cyndi Lauper was friends with a ton of '80s wrestlers. It's just such a weird and perfect fit. And it matches the goofy insanity of the music video for "Good Enough," or "The Goonies 'r' Good Enough" wonderfully. Check it out below, our Daily Jam.

Grandaddy
Grandaddy's 2000 album "The Sophtware Slump" was and still is one of my favorite records. And for its 20th anniversary, the band's Jason Lytle performed the whole thing on an old wooden piano. The stripped down versions of the tunes are just as quirky but with an extra layer of melancholy. Listen to "Jed the Humanoid" below and download "The Sophtware Slump...on a wooden piano" here via Dangerbird Records.
Daily Jam - Bump
This is going to be in my head the rest of the day now, but i'm good with that. Let's get it in your heads too. Here's "Bump" by Spank Rock, our Daily Jam.

Altin Gün
Right before i shut down the computer yesterday to eat, drink, and be something, i got wind of a new single from the always delightful Altin Gün. Last year, the Amsterdam band was responsible for one of my favorite albums. And they look like they're keeping to it this time around even with some new sounds. Dig on that funky Turkish psychedelic disco boogie. It's smooth as hell on "Ordunun Dereleri." Check the single out below and get the 7" here via ATO.
Daily Jam - Destroy Everything You Touch
It's the weekend which means i'm going to have to start cleaning the house here in a few minutes. When you've got two little kids and a dog shedding her umpteenth coat of fur for the month, it has to be done, or else it gets...gross. Anyway, gonna cue up some Ladytron, which is good cleaning the house music if you didn't know (it's good anything music really), and get to work. And then i'll look to see how many college football games COVID has ravaged this weekend. Here's "Destroy Everything You Touch," a mantra for the times and our Daily Jam.

Jack Name
Here's a little psych-tinged Americana from LA artist Jack Name to hopefully move us into a relaxing weekend. Check out "I Came to Tell You in Plain English" below and order the "Magic Touch" LP here from Mexican Summer. I can already tell that guitar melody is going to be in my head the rest of the day.
Daily Jam - Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me
I gotta say that i'm kind of embarrassed to like this song. I probably could have posted it during "shame week," but i also kind of feel like it was the last song by U2 that made any kind of impact on me. The end of an era or something. But i'm also one of those folks that thinks "Zooropa" was the last time the band was any good. Anyway, here's "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me" for all of your Batman tie-in needs, and our Daily Jam.

Daily Jam - Same Ghost Every Night
You ever have one of those songs that makes you feel kind of homesick or wistful for nothing in particular? I certainly do. And one of them is "Same Ghost Every Night" from Wolf Parade's debut album. Bring on the melancholy. Check it out below, our Daily Jam.
Mahr
I don't know why i find it so funny when searching for info on a black metal band turns up fruitless. Like in the case of Mahr who have a new record out. My search results were: country of origin - unknown, location - n/a, current lineup - none, and so on. Fantastic. Anyway, the band's new album "Maelstrom" is the kind of atmospheric cacophony you might expect from a mysterious black metal project that sounds like the world ending and the dead rising. Check out "Furor Internus" below and order the LP here via Prava Kollektiv.

Creux Lies
Here's some new post-punk goth pop from Sacramento post-punk goth pop band Creux Lies. This stuff sounds like it should have come out 35 years ago, and i don't mean that in a bad way. Check out "Blue" below and order the "Blue/The Veil" 7" here from the band.
Daily Jam - Frontier
On Monday night, i tripped over a pillow on the floor in the dark and slammed the front of my foot into the bed frame, splitting my big toenail down the center and pulling half of it away from the skin. As you can imagine, it felt awesome. Anyway, that doesn't have anything to do with anything, but here's "Frontier" by Dead Can Dance, our Daily Jam.

Serpents
Somehow this year has been simultaneously the longest one in existence and one that's almost gone in the blink of an eye. The holiday season is already upon us. And this time around, lockdowns may be putting a halt to family fights. Or not. What do i know. All you idiots are just going to do what you always do which is why this damn virus is never going to go away. I hate you all. Anyhoo, with the winter solstice just over a month away, maybe you need some chant-laden, spell-casting, mood music to celebrate. If so, give "Anima," the latest effort from Italian group Serpents a try. It sounds like witchcraft in an ancient world. Check out the eerie "AlphaOmega" below and order the record here from BloodRock Records.

Phantom Spire
I can't find much information on black metal artist Phantom Spire, just that they're American in origin. But it doesn't matter. There's a weird kind of joy in listening to some mysterious artist's songs and having know idea where the sounds are coming from. A combination of atmospheric black metal and lo-fi dungeon synth, Phantom Spire hits that sweet spot for a very distinct kind of listener. Me i guess. Check out "The Stars Light My Path" below and download "Our Heaven Amongst the Stars" here.
Daily Jam - Moonshot
I've been on a little bit of a Galaxie 500 kick lately, most likely the result of the band's live "Copenhagen" album getting the vinyl reissue treatment for the first RSD drop back in August. And that Galaxie 500 kick led me on to Luna which then led me on to Dean & Britta. Check out the husband/wife duo's cover of Buffy Sainte Marie's "Moonshot" below, our Daily Jam.

Melvins
I had a couple of friends pop up in my feed over the last couple days with links to the upcoming new Melvins album "Working with God." And i finally just checked it out this morning and have had the biggest shit eating grin on my face ever since. Absolutely delightful. Listen to "I Fuck Around" below and pre-order the record here from Ipecac.
Daily Jam - Hell Bent
I've been drawn to the melancholy electro-alt-rock of Kenna's "Hell Bent" ever since i first heard the song and saw the claymation video some 17 years ago or so. And i wanted to post the video here but i couldn't find it anywhere. What i did find was that the video used a short film called "MORE" by Mark Osborne that has New Order's "Elegia" as its score. And now i'm not sure if maybe the Kenna people used it illegally. Anyway, it's still a wonderful song. Check it out below, our Daily Jam. And look for the short film too, as it is also wonderful.

Daily Jam - Nothing Like This
Gone but not forgotten, here's a track from the late, great hip-hop producer J Dilla. Check out "Nothing Like This" below, our Daily Jam.
Mothermary - Resurrection
Electro-pop duo Mothermary just released a video for their track "Resurrection" from the excellent compilation album "After Dark 3." Check out the spooky synth-vibes below and get the album here from Italians Do It Better. The vinyl is up for pre-order now too! Hooray!

The Notwist
January brings us a new album from Germany's The Notwist, a band i have not thought about in years. Back in the early '00s when everyone was freaking out over The Postal Service, i found myself more drawn to the similar electro-folk-pop sounds of Markus Acher and company instead. Check out new tune "Where You Find Me" below and pre-order the upcoming "Vertigo Days" LP here via Morr Music.
Labels:
alt-rock,
electro-pop,

Record Setter
Good ol' Denton, Texas. The northern Texas college town has been pumping out great guitar rock bands for years, and one of the more recent arrivals is the melodic and chaotic Record Setter. The four-piece make loud and noisy kind of emo or screamo or whatever you want to call it. Good stuff. Listen to "An Impression" below and get the new "I Owe You Nothing" LP here via Topshelf Records.
Labels:
alt-rock,
emo,
punk,
Record Setter,
screamo,
Topshelf Records
Daily Jam - Flames
About to build another set of shelves to put records on and get them off of the floor. The music collection is slowly taking over the house. I did a purge back before coronavirus, and it was hard, and i'll probably have to do another before too terribly long. Boo. Anyway, here's "Flames" by VAST, our Daily Jam.

Soft Kill
It's always weird how i just back into certain artists, the most recent of which is Portland, Oregon's post punk doom pop band Soft Kill. I found my way to them via a recent cover of a Rowland S. Howard song (of whom i am a fan) released by Nick Sadler of Daughters (of whom i am also a fan) and Tobias Grave of the aforementioned Soft Kill. They make moody, sometimes dreamy, sometimes icy music for the black clothing set. Check out the Tamaryn assisted "Floodgate" below and order the upcoming "Dead Kids, R.I.P. City" LP here via Cercle Social.
Daily Jam - Strangler
Going with some early '00s post punk/alt-rock from New York band Calla today. Check out "Strangler," our Daily Jam.

Sea Oleena
Rising global fascism got you down? Me too. If you need a few minutes to recharge and center yourself again before the fight continues, i implore you to check out "Weaving a Basket," the latest release from droney, folky, shoegazey artist Sea Oleena. Listen to the whole thing below, meditate, do what you need to do. And you can download it here and pay what you want.
Daily Jam - I Touch Myself
So, i guess we're all just kind of watching an incompetent attempt at a coup right now, and i can only imagine it's going to get so much crazier and so much stupider before all is said and done. Guess i'll just sit back and...listen to "I Touch Myself" by Divinyls. Here it is, our Daily Jam.

Sadness
Enigmatic bedroom black metal artist Sadness just dropped a new EP of material recorded earlier this year for our listening consumption. It's one of those things that's equal parts beauty and ugliness. Check out "Capturing" below and get the "Holding" EP here from the artist for a dollar.
Daily Jam - Stars
I feel like there were a dozen songs in the '90s called "Stars," and i feel like i liked most of them. Here's one from English band Dubstar, our Daily Jam.

Daily Jam - 30 Century Man
There's never really not a good day to listen to some Scott Walker, unless you're thinking of the asshole former governor of Wisconsin. No. Don't listen to him. Fuck that guy. Anyway, here's "30 Century Man" from "Scott 3," our Daily Jam.

Nick Sadler and Tobias Grave
This popped up for me last night, Nick Sadler of Daughters and Tobias Grave of Soft Kill covering "Autoluminescent" by Rowland S. Howard. It's wonderful. Listen below and get it here from Cercle Social Records.
