Bing & Ruth

New York's experimental ambient ensemble Bing & Ruth recorded their latest album "Species" out in the dust and desert of West Texas.  The atmosphere lends itself handily to the artist's minimalist sounds.  To me, i can see the rolling white dunes of the Monahans sand hills listening to the soothing Farfisa organ on "I Had No Dream."  Blue skies that go on forever, light touching everything.  Listen below and grab the new LP here from 4AD.

Angel Olsen

It's been a real shitty day today right?  Well, at least we're getting a new album from Angel Olsen next month.  Dropping the epic and symphonic (and also excellent) sound of last year's "All Mirrors" for something more stripped down, haunting, and achingly lovely, the new album is probably going to sound like quarantine.  Pre-order the "Whole New Mess" LP here from Jagjaguwar and listen to the wonderful title track below.

WOW

Italian experimental, psych-tinged post punk band WOW just released a new album called "Falene."  Side A of the cassette is a closed door live set recorded during quarantine, and Side B includes a remix of an older track and a couple brand new tunes.  Check out the creeping, crawling title track below and get the album here from Maple Death Records.

RIP John Saxon

I saw last night that actor John Saxon passed away at the age of 83.  Like most folks my age, my first memory of him was as Nancy's dad in "A Nightmare on Elm Street," with a whole slew of roles to follow.  As my B-movie viewing expanded, i'd catch him in all manner of films, with his mere presence elevating what might otherwise be garbage.  And now i'll watch anything with him in it.  He'll be missed.  RIP John Saxon.

Zetra

UK duo Zetra have been a permanent fixture in my house since hearing their demo tape a year and a half ago, their particular mesh of darkwave synth pop, shoegaze, industrial, doom, and black metal feeling tailor made just for my ears.  And next month finally sees the release or their Death Waltz debut.  Listen to "Phaethon" below, pre-order the cassette from the band here, and be on the lookout for the vinyl in the near future.

Belgian shoegaze band Slow Crush have partnered with synth artist Lost Century Kid for a reworking of the title track from the band's 2018 album "Aurora."  The result is "Aurora Redux," a lush and dreamy jam that feels like it would have fit right in on the "Drive" soundtrack.  Check it out below and get it here.

Andy Bell

Flesh of Morning

When i'm hunting around online for new music to listen to and i come across an artist i've never heard of before who's listed as being from Austin, i can't help but to give them a spin.  And it's always a treat when the artist makes a style of music that's not generally associated with the Austin scene.  And so we have the propulsive and moody "Death Becomes Bitter" from synthy, darkwave post punk duo Flesh of Morning.  Check it out below and pre-order the upcoming "We Are" b/w "Death Becomes Bitter" cassette here from Annals Imprint.

Cut Worms

Yo La Tengo

HEALTH and Full of Hell are both bands that like to collaborate with other artists, so i suppose it was just a matter of time before the electro noise band and the hardcore metal noise band teamed up to collaborate together.  And what a collaboration.  The aptly named "Full of Health" pairs the best parts of both artists together for a pretty rad track.  Check it out below and pre-order the upcoming 7" here from Closed Casket.

Offermose

German record label Beläten just released a new sampler cassette featuring 19 artists on the roster.  The mix, entitled "En Sommar Av Plåga," is comprised of a whole lot of different, rad sounds, from darkwave synth pop to industrial beats, drone to black metal tinged noise, post punk to dark, ambient soundscapes.  I was sold one track in.  And that first track is from Danish experimental artist Offermose.  Check out the icy and crawling "Korrupt Tradition" below and get the whole album here from the label.

Frank Ene

Frank Ene (former member of Pure Bliss and The Fresh and Onlys) just released a new short solo album of darkened pop.  The songs on "No Longer" aren't necessarily gothy or anything, but there's an element of later era Leonard Cohen floating over the whole affair like gathering storm clouds, rain beginning to fall as a sad drunk laments his life in a dark corner of a bar.  Check out "I've Studied You" below and get the album here via Empty Cellar.
