Marie Davidson & L’Œil Nu

Montreal electronic artist Marie Davidson continues to make music with her full band L’Œil Nu to dizzying and wonderful effect.  Last year's "Renegade Breakdown" was one of my personal favorites, and now the group has released a new single, "Persona," featuring three different versions of the track, playing with some Jungian concepts.  Cool stuff.  Check 'em all out below and download them here from Ninja Tune.

Irreversible Entanglements

Even if you have only a passing interest in jazz, the stuff getting released by International Anthem is almost obscenely good.  And the latest is the third LP from New York/Philadelphia/Washington DC free-jazz outfit Irreversible Entanglements.  "Open the Gates" is a blast and swirl of sound and textures that feels like the birth of something enormous.  Check out the album opening title track below and pre-order the record here.

Daily Jam - Fire Coming Out of the Monkey's Head

Isn't wild that Gorillaz have been around for 20 years?  One of those things that makes me feel like an old, old man.  Anyway, sophomore effort "Demon Days" was a favorite around these parts for a spell, so here's "Fire Coming Out of the Monkey's Head."  If there's anything i've learned from this song, it's that we needed more tracks with Dennis Hopper narration in them.  Just a thought.  Check it out below, our Daily Jam.

Explosions in the Sky

Earlier this year, Texas band Explosions in the Sky recorded the score for the appropriately Texas-themed PBS documentary about Big Bend National Park.  That music is set to see a physical release in October.  Check out "Climbing Bear" below and pre-order the "Big Bend" soundtrack here.

Marissa Nadler

October brings us (hopefully) cooler weather, seasonal change, Halloween, and some appropriately somber, beautiful, and sometimes murder-hued new music from Marissa Nadler.  Nadler releases material all the time, but this is her first proper record of original tunes in a couple of years.  Check out the wistful "Bessie, Did You Make It?" below and pre-order the upcoming "The Path of the Clouds" LP here via Sacred Bones.

Stomp Talk Modstone

Japanese shoegaze band Stomp Talk Modstone are having a busy 2021, having already released one of my favorite albums of the year back in January, and then following that up with a string of singles.  The latest is the dreamy "She Was in the Depth of Misery and Take New Way."  Check the track out below and get it here from the band.

I just can't help but tumble head first into the '90s alt-rock aping sounds of so many young bands out there.  Does that make me old?  Yeah, probably.  A graying old dude getting some of that nostalgia dopamine injected straight into my ears.  And North Carolina band Wednesday are supplying said dopamine today.  Check out the crunchy, mid-tempo guitar swirl of "Twin Plagues" below and get the album of same name here via Orindal Records.

Psychic Mirrors

It may feel like summer is nearing its end, but that's no reason we can't still listen to goofy ass pop music.  And the boys and girls of Miami band Psychic Mirrors are here to provide.  Smooshing together yacht rock, cheesy '80s pop, synth jazz, and a little boogie-funk, the group has sounds for pool parties, boat parties, or just dancing by yourself in your living room.  Check out "You Remind Me" below and get the "Ophilia" album here.

Flowertown

Woke up to discover some wonderful and fuzzy indie pop this morning from San Francisco duo Flowertown.  The band makes hazy, dreampop-tinged, lo-fi pop with a jangle here and some reverb there that feels like its simultaneously pulling from sounds of the '60s, the '90s, and from a decade ago.  Check out "Time Trials," the title track from their new album below, and snag a copy of the record here from Paisley Shirt.

Daily Jam - Dogs

Sometimes it feels like Pink Floyd's "Animals" gets lost in the shuffle of the band's discography.  I guess being wedged in between "Wish You Were Here" and "The Wall" will do that kind of thing.  Anyway, there are days when i secretly and firmly believe that it's actually their best album.  Listening to "Dogs" will do that kind of thing.  Check the track out below, our Daily Jam.

Bnny

I am absolutely hypnotized by the opening track of Chicago artist Bnny's new album "Everything."  "Ambulance" sounds like some subdued, '60s-inspired doo-wop track as performed by a reverb-heavy shoegaze or dreampop act from the first half of the '90s.  Think Mazzy Star or Cowboy Junkies B-side vibes, and you're getting close.  Excellent dreamy and dusty stuff.  Check it out below and get the album here from Fire Talk.

Daily Jam - Myself When Young

You may not think you need a jazz harpist in your life, but trust me when i say without a hint of irony, you need a jazz harpist in your life.  At least that's the case with Dorothy Ashby.  Considered one of the most accomplished yet underloved artists to come out of the American jazz scene, i was introduced to her 1970 album "The Rubaiyat of Dorothy Ashby" by chance a couple months ago and was completely blown away.  Just masterful work.  Check out one of my highlights, "Myself When Young" below, our Daily Jam.

Cherubs

It was very cool a couple years back when we got new music from '90s Austin noise makers Cherubs, and it's very cool now that we're getting even more, this time around with a new record of songs and "skrewed" versions of said songs.  Check out the oozing and raucous "Lazy Snakes (Skrewed Version)" below and pre-order the upcoming "SLO BLO 4 FRNZ & SXY" here from Relapse.

Halloween Kills

Though i think it's divided among fans, i very much enjoyed the last "Halloween" movie a couple years back, and i'm stoked for the upcoming sequel, "Halloween Kills."  And as usual, it's always a treat to get that accompanying John Carpenter score to go along with it.  Pre-order that record here from Sacred Bones, and listen to "Unkillable" below.

ORAX

I know we're only in the middle of August, but i'm already starting to feel those early fall vibes.  It could be because school has already started here, or the unseasonably cool summer we've had, or that football is right around the corner, but my autumn nature in nigh.  And that means Halloween.  So what better way to get a jump start on those feelings than with some soundtrack and video game inspired synth wave from ORAX.  Check out the thumping churn of "Mistake" below and pre-order the upcoming "Love Kills the Demon" album here from NewRetroWave.

Parquet Courts

Brooklyn band Parquet Courts have a new album heading our way in October, and this time around the band is bringing in some dance vibes to pair with their particular brand of post punk.  Citing influences like Talking Heads and Primal Scream, "Sympathy for Life" feels like it's going to be a party in a time when we desperately need one.  Check out first single "Walking at a Downtown Pace," on which the Primal Scream influence is particularly evident, below and pre-order the album here from Rough Trade.

Chicago based band Dos Santos craft a mix of psychedelia, jazz, Latin soul, folk, and more to make music that feels of the moment and of the earth.  The group's upcoming new album "City of Mirrors" utilizes those vibes and sounds to paint a picture of modern America, grappling with its traditions, its history, its past transgressions, and its current ones.  Check out the title track below and pre-order the record here from International Anthem.

Mouth Painter

Portland band Mouth Painter take vibes and notions from country music, exotica, lounge, folk, and psychedelia to make dreamy, floaty bits of Americana.  This is the kind of music to watch a sunset to, to float on your back in the ocean to, to drift away into the cosmos to.  Get the band's "Tropicale Moon" LP here from Arrowhawk Records and listen to the title track below.

Danny Elfman and Trent Reznor
