VHS Glitch

VHS Glitch is always good for some evil, Halloween-fueled synth wave, and new album "ROBOROR" is no different.  Like a soundtrack to an imaginary action horror flick that bleeds ultra violence, this thing jams in all the right places.  Listen to the title track below and get the album here.

Living Nudes - Call Me Lucifer b/w Demons! Goblins! Witches!

I recorded a couple of songs (written a decade ago) specifically for Halloween.  Listen to "Call Me Lucifer" and "Demons! Goblins! Witches!" below, and as always, if you are so inclined, download any and all of my stuff here.

Happy Halloween!

Sally Dige

Berlin by way of Vancouver artist Sally Dige makes simple and catchy, industrial-tinged synth pop.  The Gothic and darkwave edges are the perfect fit for Fall listening.  Check out "Holding On" below and grab the full-length LP of the same name from DKA Records.

Brian Eno with Kevin Shields - Only Once Away My Son

Legendary artist/producer Brian Eno recorded a new song with My Bloody Valentine main man Kevin Shields...and that's really all you need to know.  Listen to "Only Once Away My Son," and then maybe blur out of reality.  It's beautiful.  Much thanks to Adult Swim.

Hannah Peel

Combining spacey, analog synths with a 29-piece orchestra, Irish experimental and electronic composer Hannah Peel crafts something truly epic with her latest album "Mary Casio: Journey to Cassiopeia."  Lush and cinematic, the album sounds like a trip to the farthest reaches of space, the gorgeous soundtrack to exploring the universe.  It's magical.  Listen to album opener "Goodbye Earth" below and buy it from the artist here.

Parsnip

Here's some excellent, psych-tinged, girls-in-the-garage style rock from female four-piece Parsnip.  "Health" sounds like something that's been preserved in time for over 50 years, just waiting to be unearthed and danced to.  Listen below, and pre-order the band's self-titled 7" from Anti Fade.

Katy & Nick

London duo Katy & Nick make a kind of simple, stripped, and abrasive version of synth wave.  It's haunting, but also kind of intimidating.  And it's awesome.  Listen to "That Man Is Back" below and get the "What I Did For You" 2-track EP here from the band.

Goon

LA band Goon, who released the fantastic "Cammie at Night" single earlier this year, are back with a new EP at the end of October.  "Happy Omen" is a catchy mix of psych, garage rock, and grunge, and should definitely be on your radar.  Pre-order it here from the band and listen to "She" below.

RIP Fats Domino

Rhythm and Blues legend Fats Domino passed away today at the age of 89.  Maybe it's my NOLA origin, but i've always had a soft spot in my heart for the artist.  Listen to his wonderful "Walking to New Orleans" below.  RIP Fats Domino.

Box of Souls: A Nightmare on Elm Street Collection

So, this is pretty amazing.  Mondo/Death Waltz has been working on this release for well over a year, and now it's finally complete...the 8LP "Box of Souls: A Nightmare on Elm Street Collection," featuring the scores to the first 7 Elm Street films.  Featuring work from Charles Bernstein, Christopher Young, Angelo Badalamenti, and more, this fantastic looking box set looks to be perfect for horror hounds and film score connoisseurs alike.  It goes on sale today, and if i had an extra $250 hanging around, i'd totally order it.  Maybe you do have an extra $250 hanging around, so maybe you do order it.  Maybe you have an extra $500 on you.  Maybe you order two.  Maybe you give one to me.  I don't know, i'm just spit-balling here.  Anyway, get it here and listen to "Prologue/Main Title" from the Bernstein's original film score below.

King Krule

King Krule is one of those artists where if i'm not in the right frame of mind, i just can't do it.  I don't mean that as a slight, i'm just being honest with myself.  But, on the occasion when my head and heart align with the musician's sonic worldview, i'll admit it's hard to shake from my ears.  New album "The Ooz" feels like an amalgamation of a hundred different genres twisted and filtered through one weirdo's mind, kind of like old Beck, but maybe without the irony, and with even more of a drawl (this one British no less).  Anyway, watch the video for album track "Dum Surfer" below, and cop the record from XL.

Witches' Halloween Brew

In case you haven't noticed, Halloween is right around the corner, and as i've been cramming as many horror films into my head as possible and sneaking handfuls of candy acquired for the neighborhood kids, i've also been listening to the darkest, spookiest jams i can find.  Coincidentally enough, the good folks at Burning Witches Records just released a compilation of dark and spooky synth wave music from a whole slew of awesome artists.  "Witches' Halloween Brew" has tracks from Xander Harris, MAINE, Pye Corner Audio, Wojciech Golczewski, and more.  It's some perfect evening soundtrack music for the remainder of the month.  Unfortunately, the cassettes are long gone, but you can still download the album here.  Get to it and stream the whole thing below.

BADBADNOTGOOD with Samuel T. Herring

Ever since Toronto jazz outfit BADBADNOTGOOD offered up a brilliant and inspired remix of Future Islands' "Seasons (Waiting on You)," i've been all in any time the group partners up with Future Islands lead singer Samuel T. Herring.  Somehow they make magic.  Listen to the one off single "I Don't Know" below, a swooning soulful jam that makes me long for a full length collaborative album from these guys.

Cluster Buster

It's been a few years since we last heard from Cluster Buster, and as it turns out, October is the perfect time for some new horror score indebted synth slayers.  Listen to "Threshold Into Terror" below and grab the new "Midnight Maimer" album from Future 80's Records.  Just in time for Halloween.

Nightcrawler

Looks like we've got some sleek new synth-fueled darkwave jams from Spain's Nightcrawler.  New album "Beware of the Humans" is a mix of horror score and icy 80's synth pop, equal parts creeping and dancing.  Listen to the title track below, featuring Celine and Vincenzo Salvia and get the album here.

Headroom

Here's some mind crushing, noisy, spaced-out psych rock from Connecticut's Headroom.  "How to Grow Evil Flowers" crawls and oozes, reverb drenched notes echoing for eternity into fuzzy synths and cosmic oblivion.  Listen below and get the band's "Head in the Clouds" LP digitally here, or physically from Trouble In Mind.

Fever Ray - To the Moon and Back

Now, here's our first new music from Fever Ray in 8 years, an icy and catchy synth pop song with some pretty X-rated lyrics, and a creeeeepy video to accompany it.  Watch a reanimated corpse make its way to a sexual fetish filled tea party in "To the Moon and Back" below.  And maybe be on the lookout for a new record?

King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard - Crumbling Castle

Australian psych and garage rock weirdos King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard are still hard at work on their quest to release 5 studio albums this year.  So far, we're 3 albums in, and regrettably beginning to run out of time...BUT, the band just released a video for a new tune called "Crumbling Castle" from an as of yet untitled 4th record for the year.  Watch and listen to the epic jam below and be on the lookout for the band's next record.  I'm crossing my fingers that they get this done.

Ty Segall - Meaning

Hey, here's a new track from Ty Segall.  As per usual, it's great.  Listen to "Meaning" below and grab it here via Drag City.

October Horror Trailer - Carnival of Souls

Nurses

I'm at a bit of a loss on how to describe the music of Portland, Oregon duo Nurses.  From the opening notes of "In the Mirror," the first track on the band's new "Naughtland" LP, there's something unnerving about the atmosphere, familiarity shrouded in fog, like stumbling through a waking dream, where logic is turned inside out and everything feels slightly askew.  It's wonderfully warped and experimental pop.  Listen to "In the Mirror" below, download the album here, and be on the lookout for vinyl version in the near future.

Superchunk - Break the Glass b/w Mad World

Good news!  New music form alt-rock stalwarts Superchunk, and all the proceeds benefit the Southern Poverty Law Center.  Listen to both "Break the Glass" and the band's cover of Corrosion of Conformity's "Mad World" below and buy them here via Merge.

The Go! Team

Looks and sounds like we've got a new album from The Go! Team headed our way in January.  These guys consistently put a smile on my face.  Listen to "Semicircle Song" below, and be on the lookout for "Semicircle" on Memphis Industries.

The New Mutants

Evidently, Josh Boone is making a horror movie...but with X-Men in it.  Check out the trailer for next year's "The New Mutants."  I am so down with this.

Death of Lovers

If you've ever wondered what it would sound like if the guys from Nothing recorded a moody synth pop album, wonder no more.  Death of Lovers' full-length album "The Acrobat" is due next month on Dais Records, and answers all your questions.  Hint: it sounds pretty good.  Listen to "The Absolute" below.

October Horror Trailer - Dead & Buried

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross cover Halloween

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross covered John Carpenter's theme from "Halloween."  So, happy early Halloween everybody.  It's pretty cool.  Listen below.

Exploded View

I was not expecting new music from Exploded View next month, but i'll gladly take it.  The Anika fronted post punk group makes cold and eerie music to put the soul ill at ease.  Listen to "Summer Came Early" below and get the EP of the same name from Sacred Bones.

ALEX

Though it came out back in February, the folks over at NewRetroWave are putting out synth pop maestro ALEX's "Youth" EP on vinyl.  You can pre-order now, with the record coming out sometime early next year.  Listen to the Rachel McAlpine assisted "Rebel of the Night" below.

October Horror Trailer - Train to Busan

Prurient

I've been a fan of Dominick Fernow's often challenging Prurient project for a few years now, and news about the artist's upcoming new album may make it even more than i can handle.  Due in December via Profound Lore and Hospital Productions, new album "Rainbow Mirror" is said to be over 3 hours, spread out over 7 LP's or 4 CD's.  It will be noisy.  It will be droney.  It may sound like the end of the world.  Anyway, listen to the first taste from the record below, the 14-minute "Naturecum."

John Maus - Teenage Witch

Here's another new track from the upcoming, triumphant return of John Maus and his new record "Screen Memories."  Watch the video for "Teenage Witch" below, featuring footage of a young Mr. Maus and get the record later this month on Ribbon Music.

Deep Cross

Here's a dark and moody little slice of experimental, industrial drone from Deep Cross.  Good to set the mood this Halloween season before the powers that be kill us all.  Listen to album closer "Ophite" below and get the self-titled cassette from Somatic next month.
