Khruangbin Remixed

August brings us a new album from Houston's Khruangbin, this time in remix form.  "Mordechai Remixes" reworks tunes from, you guessed it, last year's "Mordechai" LP.  The band's particular brand of world psych and funk lends itself to being reworked by other artists, so this record should be cool as shit.  Check out Quantic's "Pelota (Cut a Rug Mix)" below and pre-order the album here from Dead Oceans.

Sault

Having released four of my favorite albums of the last two years, i suppose i shouldn't be surprised that the enigmatic UK act Sault is back at it again with new album "Nine."  The usual mix of soul, funk, hip-hop, and everything in between is in the air again, and we are here for it around these parts.  Check out "London Gangs" below and get the record here from Forever Living Originals.

Sarah Davachi

I'll be honest, some cool album art will get my attention and make me listen, which is exactly what just happened with the upcoming "Antiphonals" LP from LA artist Sarah Davachi.  I clicked on the album thinking it might be some kind of goth or darkwave thing and instead get some organ-based ambient music that was immediately soothing and hypnotic.  Check out "Rushes Recede" below and pre-order the album here from Late Music.

Zetra

UK darkwave industrial shoegaze duo Zetra will be releasing a new EP, "From Within," later this summer, and the first single dropped this morning.  Check out "Life Melts Away" below and download the track here.

SPC ECO

Here's a really awesome mix of dreampop, trip-hop, shoegaze, and darkwave electronic pop from SPC ECO, the project of Dean Garcia, formerly of Curve, and his daughter Rose Berlin.  "All I See" sounds like the kind of alt-rock that would have been on every single mixtape i made when i was in high school, moody, brooding, awesome stuff.  Check it out below and download the new "Day by Day" album here from the band and pay what you want.

Pozi

Cool music coming at me from all directions and genres this morning.  UK post punk band Pozi has a unique sound, grooving on post punk beats and baselines but with added sonic textures from lead vocalist Rosa Brook's ominous and disorienting violin.  It makes for some real paranoia-laden vibes in a not really post-pandemic world.  Check out "Sea Song" below and pre-order the upcoming "Typing" EP here from PRAH Recordings.

Angel Bat Dawid

Jazz artist Angel Bat Dawid just released a new album/mixtape, the "Hush Harbor Mixtap Vol. I Doxology," cassette.  The album is a weird, twisting and turning mix of jazz, soul, R&B, experimental folk, devotional synth hymns, and more.  It's a fascinating listen.  Check out "Heathen Practices at Funerals" below, a track that starts with a kind of subdued and autotuned R&B thing but morphs into a beautiful and also subdued instrumental synth exploration.  Cool stuff.  The cassette sold out instantly, as these things are wont to happen, but you can download the album here from International Anthem.

Damon Albarn

It appears that Blur/Gorillaz front man Damon Albarn has written and recorded a new solo album during the pandemic.  If "The Nearer the Fountain, More Pure the Stream Flows" is any indication, we're in for a somber affair.  That's okay though, as i've always felt that there's an innate sadness to Albarn's voice, even in his most hyper, frenetic, or sardonic work.  Check the song out below and pre-order this November's album of the same name here via Transgressive.

New Orleans experimental artist MJ Guider just released a new album, the moody and haunting drone of "Temporary Requiem."  The pieces were written and recorded a couple of years back during the same sessions that gave us the artist's great 2020 album "Sour Cherry Bell."  Check out the sprawling, ambient, Pagan sounds of "Benedictus: Tribute to Leviathan, Her Ancestors, and Her Progeny" below and download the album here (the limited cassette is sold out).

Lord Summerisle

Here's some dark psychedelic rock from Barcelona's Lord Summerisle.  The band makes the kind of grooving and ominous jams that would accompany a devil-worshiping biker gang as they drive through the deserts of the southwest.  Check out "Benera" below and get the "Postum" album here from Library of the Occult.

The Amorphous Androgynous

Here's a new mind-melter from London psych rock band The Amorphous Androgynous.  "The Emptiness of Nothingness" pulls from psych, prog, jazz, and soul to create something that sounds like the whole universe imploding in on itself.  Check it out below and get the new "The World Is Full of Plankton" EP here.

Sally Shapiro

Swedish synth pop artist Sally Shapiro called it quits back in 2016...but it appears she was only teasing as she's back with a new single, "Fading Away," this time around being serendipitously released by the like-minded folks over at Italians Do It Better.  Check the track out below (it's great!), and get it here.

Daily Jam - Prospect Hummer

Last weekend, i masked up and drove into town to hit up the shops for Record Store Day.  Things were very organized and the chaos that usually surrounds the event was abated.  It was different to be sure, but wonderful to get out and do that kind of thing again.  One of the records i picked up was the 2005 "Prospect Hummer" EP from Animal Collective and Vashti Bunyan.  Here's the title track below, our Daily Jam.

Divide and Dissolve and Chelsea Wolfe

Earlier this year, Australian female duo Divide and Dissolve released the excellent "Gas Lit" LP, a collection of slow and heavy drone metal about imperialism, colonialism, and the plight of indigenous peoples.  Three of the tracks off the record are getting the remix/rework treatment on the upcoming "Gas Lit 3 Part Remix," one of those tracks being a pretty intense reworking of "Far From Ideal" from Chelsea Wolfe.  The new version is just as cacophonous as its original counterpart, but weightier with Wolfe's haunted vocals.  Check it out below and pre-order the remix EP here.

Portland duo Ritual Veil just dropped an EP of '80s synth and new wave indebted pop.  Seriously, these guys have nailed the sound so succinctly, that you could have plucked theses songs straight out of 1985.  Check out "Keep Looking Down" below and get the EP of the same name here.

Alessandro Cortini

Alessandro Cortini is an Italian artist based in Portugal specializing in synthesizer explorations, dark ambient, and drone.  New album "Scuro Chiaro" just came out last week with sounds and tones that feel like that they're coming in from the farthest reaches of space.  Check out "Chiaroscuro" below, download the album here, and go over to Mute for the vinyl.

Andrew Sa

Andrew Sa is a rising star of sorts in Chicago's queer country scene, performing often for The Cosmic Country Showcase, a cult psychedelic variety program.  The showcase just released an EP of cover tunes by the artist, and they're all great, lonesome and wistful versions of tracks from Chris Isaak, Roy Orbison, and so on.  Check out the cover of Hank Snow's "I Wish I Was the Moon" below and download the EP here.

Bobby Gillespie and Jehnny Beth

I somehow missed the announcement earlier this year that Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie and Savages' Jehnny Beth are making a collaborative album for Jack White's Third Man Records partly inspired by old country duet albums.  Just a poor job on everyone's part keeping me up to date on this kind of thing.  I'm disappointed in all of you.  Anyway, the album, "Utopian Ashes," is due in July.  Check out the video for "Remember We Were Lovers" below and pre-order the record here.

Thinking With Sand

Thinking With Sand are a very noisy lo-fi shoegaze band from Bristol.  Their sound is a fuzzy and cacophonous mix of layered and reverbed guitar akin to running a hundred vacuum cleaners in a cave, all the while dreamy vocals float above.  It manages to be beautiful all the same.  Check out "Chrysalis" below and download the "Dreams and Half Truths" album here from Shore Dive Records.

Deafheaven

Deafheaven has a new album heading our way in August, "Infinite Granite," and going off of the first single, they're trying something new this time out.  "Great Mass of Color" finds the band leaning into the dreamier, poppier parts of their sound, foregoing George Clarke's usual anguished and growling wail for something prettier for lack of a better word.  There are falsettos in there and everything.  My jury is still out on this one, as much as i like for artists to push themselves in different directions, but it's worth a listen.  Check it out below, pre-order the digital version of the record here and the vinyl here from Sargent House.
