Saint Etienne

Black Marble

Here's a new jam from Brooklyn artist Black Marble, which is precisely what i needed today.  "Somewhere" is a cold and dreamy slice of minimalist synth pop, never quite going into full on icy coldwave or dancey bubblegum pop, but just riding the wave in the middle.  Check it out below and pre-order the upcoming "Fast Idol" LP here from Sacred Bones.

Grouper

I remember hearing New York band YVETTE several years ago, but have no idea what the context was, be it music blog or some random festival i've attended over the last decade, but i remember thinking they were good.  Anyway, they're back in my life again this fall with a new album, "How the Garden Grows."  Check out the kind of goth, kind of post punk, kind of industrial avant pop of "For a Moment" below and pre-order the LP here from Western Vinyl.

Karen Black and Cass McCombs

I've been a big fan of Karen Black for years, the actress popping up in literally hundreds of films during her career since the '60s, and i never realized she was also a poet and singer.  The good folks at Anthology Recordings, along with Black's husband and singer/songwriter Cass McCombs have seen fit to comb through old tapes and reels for a compilation of Black's songs.  Included are two tracks written and performed by McCombs and Black before her death in 2013.  It's a really cool collection of Americana, folk, and psych-tinged daydreams.  Check out "I Wish I Knew the Man I Thought You Were" below and get the "Dreaming of You (1971-1976)" LP here.

Daily Jam - Like Spinning Plates ( Live)

Daily Jam - Contempt

There was a brief period for me about 15 years ago or so when i got really into the extended works of composer and saxophonist John Zorn.  His output is immense and there's so much to get lost in, but one of the albums that i was particularly drawn to was the 1990 self-titled debut of his project Naked City.  The record was a mix of freeform jazz, no wave noise, punk, metal, and more, and it blew my post-collegiate mind.  Anyway, here's "Contempt," our Daily Jam.

In October, we're getting a new record from Toronto's experimental jazz outfit BADBADNOTGOOD.  In and of itself, this is good news, but upon hearing the first release from the album, the epic and sprawling "Signal from the Noise," consider me ecstatic.  Think if like the otherworldly instrumentals of Bowie's "Low" were recontextualized into proggy jazz numbers and then let loose upon an unsuspecting populace.  Marvelous stuff.  Check out the video below and pre-order the upcoming "Talk Memory" LP here from XL Recordings.

Natalie Bergman and Beck

Natalie Bergman is one half of the brother/sister duo Wild Belle who released her debut solo album "Mercy" earlier this year, and Beck is...well, Beck.  The two just teamed together for a cover of Dutch psych rock band Lion's 1975 track "You've Got a Woman."  It's a cool and breezy, laid back jam.  Check it out below, and be on the lookout for a 7" from Third Man Records.
