Gary Wilson - Direct to Disc

Gary Wilson, lo-fi, weirdo musical genius? Maybe. Think of him as the elder statesman to acts like Ariel Pink. Stones Throw has just released some live Gary Wilson material on their Direct to Disc series. See more info here.

Gauntlet Hair

Denver's Gauntlet Hair proved to be one of my favorite new bands of 2010 with two impressive 7" releases of jangly experimental pop jams. They're finally set to release their debut LP from Dead Oceans in October. Check out the awesome new tune "Top Bunk" and download below. Hooray!

Eternal Tapestry and Sun Araw

Sun Araw is a favorite around these parts. Droney, psyche masterpieces to float through the ether for all of eternity. Love it. Last year, Cameron Stallones and the band Eternal Tapestry recorded an album together called "Night Gallery" live at KVRX college radio here in Austin (my old radio stomping grounds). It's out now on Thrill Jockey and it's awesome. Get it here.

Here's a little background on the bands and the project, courtesy of the label:

"The friendship of Eternal Tapestry and Sun Araw's Cameron Stallones goes back to the Not Not Fun curated Neon Commune Fest, January 2007 at the much loved, and missed, Echo Curio in LA. Eternal Tapestry shared the second night's bill with Cameron's old band Magic Lantern (Barn Owl and Pocahaunted rounded out the night's festivities!), and the two psych crews hit it off immediately. LA shows were played together every time Eternal Tapestry made it south. Fast forward to Austin, TX for SXSW 2010 when Eternal Tapestry shared a bizarre afternoon parking lot gig with Sun Araw. The Tapestry had a live broadcast in-studio session lined up on KVRX student radio that night, and in true Tapestry fashion they invited their buddy Cameron to join in.

The session took place in a large TV studio on the UT campus, with the band setting up in a big circle. The line-up was Dewey Mahood and Nick Bindeman on guitars, Jed Bindeman on drums, Ryan Carlile on tenor sax, Yoni Kifle on bass, and Cameron Stallones on keyboard and trademark flute. After a brief discussion of mood, the six musicians improvised together for 45 minutes continuously. The music is heard as played that evening - no overdubs, and only a few edits to create a four section suite for the LP release. The piece is titled Night Gallery, in homage to the surreal early 1970's TV show produced by Rod Serling of Twilight Zone fame. It was this program that the six musicians fell asleep to, and woke up with, during their five day stay in Austin."

And here's an album preview for you aural pleasure:

Vomit

The new LP, "Father, Son, Holy Ghost" from San Francisco's Girls is due out in September from True Panther/Matador. While they're live show last year really didn't grab me by the balls or anything, their records are generally pretty great. And, i'm digging the new tune "Vomit." GvsB is calling it their "November Rain." Go here to listen and download.

I Saw The Devil

It took me awhile to finally sit down and watch this awesome film from Korean director Jee-Woon Kim, and holy crap, "I Saw The Devil" was awesome. The movie stars Min-sik Choi from "Oldboy" and Byung-hun Lee from "The Good, The Bad, and The Weird." Only two words can really sum up this flick: BLOODY REVENGE.

Highly recommended.

Newermind

The folks over at Spin have decided to put together a tribute record for the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's "Nevermind." Aside from making me feel really, really old, the project makes me happy because they've rounded up some pretty good artists to take on all the tracks. Check it out:

Newermind:

01 Meat Puppets: "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
02 Butch Walker & the Black Widows: "In Bloom"
03 Midnight Juggernauts: "Come as You Are"
04 Titus Andronicus: "Breed"
05 The Vaselines: "Lithium"
06 Amanda Palmer: "Polly"
07 Surfer Blood: "Territorial Pissings"
08 Foxy Shazam: "Drain You"
09 Jessica Lea Mayfield: "Lounge Act"
10 Charles Bradley and the Menahan Street Band: "Stay Away"
11 Telekinesis: "On a Plain"
12 JEFF the Brotherhood: "Something in the Way"
13 EMA: "Endless, Nameless"

You can download the whole thing for free through some sort of facebook ploy, if you're into that kind of thing.

Midnight City

M83 has been all over the inter-webs of late, what with the announcement of a new double LP and a scheduled set at this year's Fun Fun Fun Fest, and now the release of said album's first single, "Midnight City." It's epic. Download it for free right here.

Dum Dum Girls - Coming Down

The Dum Dum Girls have a new LP in the works. "Only In Dreams" is set for a September release from Sub Pop, but in the meantime, you can sample and download the first single, "Coming Down" below. Get out your old Mazzy Star albums.

New Radiohead remixes

Check out the latest remixes of Radiohead's "The King of Limbs" below. The second installment of the 12" remix series will be available in the US on August 2nd.

Hamell On Trial on Daytrotter

Storytelling by acoustic folk/punk, Hamell On Trial is an artist that at times can sound like a Scorsese monologue over frenetic strumming. You're either going to love it or hate it. I love it, and you should to. Check out his session on Daytrotter, and you'll be good to go, ya know.

Eyes Be Closed (Lovelock remix)

Teen Daze

Dreamscaping producer/musician Teen Daze has a new EP due out from Waaga in August. "A Silent Planet" is C.S. Lewis-inspired (i'm not sure what that means) and should help us all sink into our beds in a near-catatonic state. Hazaa.

Puro Instinct/John Maus pics

Here's some pics from last night's show. John Maus was definitely the highlight, a bundle of ear-splitting volume and hyperactive intensity...all this from a one man band. Kick starting the night was Geneva Jacuzzi, a take on 80's goth. She also had an 8-Track for sale. Hmm. And Puro Instinct were stoned. Hooray.

Olivia Tremor Control on tour!

Olivia Tremor Control were one of my favorite bands, perfectly blending 60's-inspired sunshine psychedelic pop with weird noise collages. and they're responsible for one of my favorite albums of all time ("Black Foliage, Vol. 1"). I've been lamenting the lack of new material for years, having to suffice with Circulatory System and the other creative endeavors that the band members have done over the last decade. But, holy shit, they've gotten the band back together so to speak and are gearing up to go on tour this fall...and their first stop is in Austin. I'll be there. Shouldn't you be? Here's the complete tour schedule:

08-31 Austin, TX - Mohawk
09-03 Los Angeles, CA - FYF Fest
09-05 San Francisco, CA - Great American Music Hall
09-08 Seattle, WA - Vera Project
09-09 Portland, OR - Someday Lounge
09-12 Minneapolis, MN - Varsity Theatre
09-13 Chicago, IL - Bottom Lounge
09-14 Columbus, OH - Wexner Center
09-15 Pittsburgh, PA - New Hazlet Theatre
09-16 Toronto, Ontario - Lee's Palace
09-17 Montreal, Quebec - Il Motore
09-19 Boston, MA - Brighton Music Hall
09-21 New York, NY - Le Poisson Rouge
09-23 Philadelphia, PA - UPenn Rotunda
12-02-04 Minehead, England - ATP Festival

Elite Gymnastics

Okay, so i know we have a bit of a hard-on over here for synthesizer jams, but goddammit, they're fun and they make us feel good. Keeping that in mind, go over to Elite Gymnastics' tumblr page to download the "Ruin 1" and "Ruin 2" EP's. They're free, but you can give the band money if you feel so inclined. They do work hard.

Fun summer music to drink cocktails by the pool by.

Xiu Xiu

Art-music weirdos Xiu Xiu have a new 7" due in September. The A-side is about a friend who was raped by a police officer after being arrested for shoplifting. (Heavy stuff.) The B-side is a Rihanna cover...

You can pre-order the record here, and listen to both tracks here.

LA Vampires Goes Ital

Following awesome records made with Psychic Reality, Zola Jesus, and Matrix Metals, LA Vampires' latest collaborative effort finds the divine Amanda Brown working with Ital (of Mi Ami fame). "Streetwise" is a cool mix of drone and dirty synthesizers, part German-engineering, part George Michael, part underwater fuzz, and very retro. This is the kind of stuff Nitzer Ebb dreamed of as children. Get the record from Not Not Fun, and watch the 1990's video for the title track below.

LA Vampires Goes Ital - Streetwise from Not Not Fun on Vimeo.

Memory Tapes

Check out Memory Tapes' new LP, "Player Piano," out now from Carpark Records. Smooth, folky, psychedelic synth-pop. Lovely. Watch the video for "Yes I Know" below.

Hobo With A Shotgun

"Hobo With A Shotgun." Over the top. Mindlessly violent and gory. Little in the way of social commentary or merit. Decapitation, evisceration, a school bus of children burned with a blow torch, and a man beaten like a pinata with a baseball bat of razor blades.

This movie is perfect.

Wugazi

We love mash-ups...or, at least we love mash-ups when they're done right. Big props to Drew for sending Wugazi my way (that would be Fugazi and Wu-Tang Clan mash-ups for my retarded friends out there). Check it out below and go to the website. Hopefully more to come very soon.

Sleep Rules Everything Around Me by WUGAZI

Zeitoun

Sometimes, we read books around here (it's not all pop music and dancing around in our underwear), and i'm knee deep in "Zeitoun" by Dave Eggers right now. It is the true story of a Syrian immigrant who stays in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina to watch after his home, his business, and help where he can. Good stuff. Eggers writes with his normal gift for the gab here and doesn't come off as pretentious as he usually does. Hooray.

Radiohead remixes part 1

The first remix 12" of Radiohead's "The King Of Limbs" comes out next week, featuring Caribou remixing "Little By Little" and Jacques Greene remixing "Lotus Flower." There are supposed to be a few of these coming out over the next couple of months. Listen to the first 2 remixes below. Hooray.

Lana Del Rey

I don't know anything about this chick, but this song is really good (in kind of a Nancy Sinatra type way) and the video's great. Check out Lana Del Rey's "Video Games" below.
