Third Part of The Night

Over the years, the good folks at Finders Keepers have locating and releasing the scores to the films of Polish filmmaker Andrzej Żuławski, and the latest is regular collaborator Andrzej Korzyński's soundtrack to the director's 1971 film "Third Part of Night."  The score consists of psych and jazz, both fuzzy and cinematic.  Check out the "Tango" below and get the 10" record here.

Daily Jam - Rainy Day

Originally recorded in the '60s and then shelved until the Finders Keepers record label unearthed it in 2006, Susan Christie's "Paint A Lady" LP is full of dreamy, soft-rock tinged psychedelic folk that we really, really should have all been hearing for decades before its release.  Every song is that wonderful.  Anyway, let's listen to the melancholy album opener "Rainy Day," our Daily Jam.

Plastic Dance Vol. 2

There's that saying about death and taxes, though i might go ahead and add another thing to our list of inevitability, and that is the absolute wonderful and obscure music that Finders Keepers compiles, reissues, and releases every single year. Their streak is absurd, with nary a missed cue or bad record in the batch. The latest compilation from the label and Andy Votel and Doug Shipton is "Plastic Dance Vol. 2," a collection of random synth and electronic pop, stabs of freaky punk rock, warped funk disco, and jazz noise experiments. It's a hell of a mix. Check out the album opening "Meat Grinder" from composer George Atwell, an artist maybe most notable for providing some music for those old NFL films. Popera Cosmic

Finders Keepers does it again.  One of those Holy Grails of record collectors, the wild, frenetic, and hypnotic "Les Esclaves" LP from French jazzy psych pop band Popera Cosmic, which has been out of print for nearly half a decade, makes its triumphant return in August remastered for the masses.  The record, made with the help of members of Space Art, Guy Skornik (who would later make all kinds of wonderful sounds for Alejandro Jodorowsky), a teen-aged Jean Michel-Jarre, and Jean Rollin orchestrator Paul Piot, is a sonic freakout that would go on to influence folks like Serge Gainsbourg and Magma.  Some mind bending stuff right here.  Listen to "Poursuite" below and order the record here.

Les Demons

You can never go wrong with any of the weird and wonderful sonic artifacts Finders Keepers chooses to reissue and grace us with year after year.  Psych, jazz, folk, funk, and more, Andy Votel digs on crate digging more than any mere mortal.  He's like some kind of obscure music bloodhound, sniffing out scores of odd and interesting music from around the world.  Earlier this year, the label released the soundtrack to Jess Franco's "Les Demons," composed by Jean-Bernard Raiteux, and it's an intoxicating foray into psych-tinged exotica, a surreal and freaky audio vision of B-movie mania.  It's awesome.  Listen to "The Weakness of Rosalinda" below and grab the record here.  Nunsploitation rules!

The Cremator

Well, it's Thursday, so here's a Finders Keepers reissue of some weirdo Czech film called "The Cremator."  The score was composed by Zdenek Liska and is very pretty.  Listen to "Spalovac Mrtvol" below.  Goodnight everybody.

Kiss of the Damned

Today i had the chance to watch the Xan Cassavetes film "Kiss of the Damned," a modern take on vampire erotica.  Visually and thematically, the movie was a perfect homage to European vampire flicks of the 60's.  Not to mention the score by Steven Hufsteter.  It reminds me of the music you would hear in a Jess Franco movie.  Absolutely perfect.  Check out the film (currently streaming on Netflix) and listen to "Kiss of the Damned Love Theme" below.

Werewolves on Wheels

In between getting sick, preparing for fatherhood, and SXSW, i somehow failed to mention the awesomeness that is Michel Levesque's 1971 film "Werewolves on Wheels" or the excellent music therein by Don Gere.  60's biker flick meets 70's satanism with a groovy, country fried, psych rock score.  You can't lose!  As per usual, the fine people at Finders Keepers, a constant purveyor of B-movie soundtrack weirdness, has you covered.  Listen to "Werewolves on Wheels (Main Theme)" below and grab the record here.
