Angine de Poitrine

Quebec band Angine de Poitrine is making a lot of noise right now.  I've been seeing their stuff pop up all over the place online, so i decided to check out the hype myself...and holy shit!  The group's got an angular post punk thing going on, but with elements of math rock, psychedelia, and so much more in the mix.  It's wild.  Listen to "Fabienk" below and try not to wiggle.  You can download the new "Vol. II" album here and pre-order an upcoming vinyl release from Levitation here.

Hooveriii

And we've got ourselves some brand new music from LA psych and garage rock band Hooveriii.  New tune "Westside Pavilion of Dreams" plays like an arena rock anthem, so be sure to mix it into your weekend plans.  Check it out below and pre-order the upcoming "Manhunter" album here or here (vinyl) from The Reverberation Appreciation Society and Levitation.

LA psych and garage rock band Hooveriii have a new record coming our way this summer.  And our first taste of "A Round of Applause" is the album's opening track "See," a poppy, reverb drenched psychedelic number with just a little bit of southern rock flare.  It's good.  Check it out below, pre-order the download here, and pre-order the vinyl here from The Reverberation Appreciation Society.

MIEN

Austin's Levitation Festival is making its triumphant return this year, after getting cancelled last minute in 2016 due to bad weather and taking 2017 off entirely, this time around spreading its excellent lineup of artists among a slew of different venues in the city.  While i'm not going to be able to make it the festival at large, i was hoping to catch Slowdive and S U R V I V E performing on the same bill that Saturday during the fest.  Playing before the two of them however is a band called MIEN, and i had wondered just who the heck they were.  Well, now i know.  A supergroup of sorts featuring members of The Black Angels, The Horrors, The Earlies (!), and Elephant Stone, the band create a worldly and psychedelic swirl of droney, trippy rock.  Sitar abounds and it's awesome.  So now i think i will certainly be catching that show.  Anyway, listen to "Earth Moon" below and look for the self-titled album this Friday on Rocket Recordings.

Slowdive and Brian Jonestown Massacre

So, Levitation was cancelled on Thursday, less than 24 hours before the event was supposed to begin, due to a bad weather prediction that never came to be.  We maybe got half an inch or rain in the middle of the night.  Needless to say, people were pissed.  People were sad.  A lot of people were stranded.  And i moped around for a while thinking about the long list of amazing artists i wasn't going to get to see.  Seriously.  Go check that original lineup out and see how incredible this weekend could have been.  All moping aside, my amazing sweetheart of a wife was able to procure tickets to one of the makeup shows that the festival was able to put together at various venues around Austin, and i got to see fantastic sets by the Brian Jonestown Massacre and Slowdive (honestly the band i was most excited to see this weekend above all others).

Hopefully next year's lineup will be just as strong...and mother nature and the county will cooperate with us.  Here's a couple pics.

JJUUJJUU

Last month during SXSW, i saw the band name JJUUJJUU all over the place, playing a ton of different parties and showcases and whatnot, but i never saw them.  Now, i see they are on the schedule for Levitation this weekend, so i guess that's the universe's way of telling me to check them out.  Hailing from LA, the duo(?) weave scores of reverb into their garage rock psychedelia, creating a sort of sun drenched and hazy atmosphere...perfect for watching in the muggy heat at a ranch on Sunday.  Listen to the band's latest single "BLECK" below and download it here.

Levitation Pet Sounds Tribute

Thanks to my wonderful wife, i will be fortunate enough to see Brian Wilson perform the monumental "Pet Sounds" in its entirety next weekend at Levitation (formerly the Austin Psych Fest).  To celebrate the occasion, the festival and its offshoot record label, the Reverberation Appreciation Society, have put together a tribute album featuring a slew of reverby psych rock bands contributing their takes on these classic cuts.  The record features The Black Angels, Shannon and The Clams, Cosmonauts, and more.  Listen to Night Beats' version of "Sloop John B" below, look for the record in stores later in May, and/or grab a copy at the fest if you're going to be there...and then share a beer with me.

Levitation 2016 Lineup

Austin's Levitation Fest, formerly known as Austin Psych Fest, just unveiled their lineup for next year's event...and it's fantastic.  Boris!  Sunn O)))!  Royal Trux!  And on and on.  Slowdive is also on there, so i'm kind of freaking out a little bit.  I guess i know where i'll be come the end of April.  Watch a video announcement for the lineup below and get tickets here.
