Teen Suicide

For some reason i was under the impression that Philly band Teen Suicide were now defunct, but it turns out i was mistaken.  And i'm damn glad i was, because the group's particular brand of lo-fi alt-rock and fuzz can be just what the doctor ordered.  Listen to new tune "Get High, Breathe Underwater (#3)" below and pre-order the upcoming "Honeybee Table at The Butterfly Feast" here from Run For Cover.

Horse Jumper of Love

Boston band Horse Jumper of Love is one of those groups whose name i remember seeing a whole lot a few years ago, but for whatever reason, i just never got around to checking out.  That's looking to be remedied with the band's upcoming new album "Natural Part," as its title track is finding a way to crawl beneath my skin.  Weird and hypnotic, i kind of love it.  Check it out below and pre-order the album here from Run For Cover Records.

I feel like it's been a spell since we last got some lo-fi goodness from Teen Suicide.  But here we are with a new track.  "Coyote (2015-2021)" is a noodling, guitar and piano number, soothing and meditative, and probably just what i need at the moment.  And that trumpet is transcendent.  Listen below and download it here from Run For Cover.

Elvis Depressedly

North Carolina lo-fi pop artist Elvis Depressedly has a new record out today on Run For Cover.  Check out the melancholy album opener "Who Can Be Loved in this World?" below and order the "Depressedelica" LP here.

American Pleasure Club

It is increasingly difficult to pin down the music made by American Pleasure Club (formerly known as Teen Suicide).  The project moves from lo-fi folk to guitar oriented indie pop to mic-in-a-room stripped down piano noodling and beyond.  Their latest album, "Fucking Bliss," keeps a lot of the lo-fi aesthetic i first loved them for but ups the noise and feedback and layers in plenty of drone to make something that's both abrasive and dreamy.  Listen to "What Kind of Love?" below and get the record here from Run For Cover.

American Pleasure Club

It looks like last month's "I Blew on a Dandelion and the Whole World Disappeared" lo-fi tape release from the newly minted American Pleasure Club (fka Teen Suicide) was just a warm up for more new material in 2018.  "A Whole Fucking Lifetime of This" is due from the band in February on Run For Cover Records and finds the group still dabbling in lo-fi bedroom pop, and to an eerie degree on the album's first single, "Lets Move to the Desert."  Watch the video below and look for the album next month.

Crying

New York's Crying take dozens of sounds and tropes from a whole plethora of genres and styles and combine it all into this kind of nerdy, poppy heaven.  Arena rock meets bubble gum pop.  Guitars and synths for everyone!  Listen to "Wool in the Wash" below and snag the "Beyond the Fleeting Gates" album Friday from Run for Cover.

If you're looking to get that lo-fi itch scratched, look no further than the upcoming final record of Teen Suicide, "It's the Big Joyous Celebration, Let's Stir the Honeypot," out next month on Run For Cover.  I'm kind of pissed that these guys are calling it quits, seeing as i've only just now discovered them.  Anyway, dig on the video to the Robert Pollard indebted "Alex" below and preorder the album here.

Elvis Depressedly

Two months ago, during the windstorm of SXSW, one band name that i kept seeing pop up everywhere, but that i was never able to catch was Elvis Depressedly.  I kind of forgot about them until their latest album, "New Alhambra" surface last week.  It's a wonderfully, warbly mix of off-kilter, lo-fi bedroom pop, bored, downtrodden psychedelia, and sweet and smooth melodies.  Listen to "Thou Shall not Murder" below, download the record from the band here (name your price), and get a physical copy from Run for Cover.

Westkust

If Sweden's Westkust don't have some kind of shrine to Creation Records set up in their rehearsal space, then something is amiss.  The five-piece, which includes members of Makthaverskan, weave a swirly, dreamy, reverb-heavy mix of shoegaze and pop with hints of post-punk splattered throughout.  I would have loved these guys 20-something years ago...hell, i love them now.  Listen to "Swirl" below and look for the upcoming "Last Forever" LP on Run For Cover later this year.

San Francisco shoegaze acts Nothing and Whirr share a member in Nick Bassett, and the two groups now have a split 12" coming out later this month on Run For Cover.  I'm stoked.  Take a listen to Nothing contribution "July the Fourth" below.
