Sungaze

Here's a lovely mix of dreampop, shoegaze, folk, country, psych, and Americana to wait for nightfall to, the 100+ degree heat here in Austin hopefully dropping with the sun and the rising of the moon.  It's really damn hot here is what i'm getting at.  Anyway, check out "The Race" below from Cincinnati band Sungaze and get their "Light in All of It" album here.

Daily Jam - How I Made My Millions

One of my favorite Radiohead B-sides, "How I Made My Millions" was recorded as a demo at home by Thom Yorke (you can faintly hear his former partner Rachel clearing dishes in the background), and was then left alone by the band, thinking it perfect as is.  It's a hushed and somber track, and there really is something about the rawness of it that can rend a heart.  Check it out below, our Daily Jam.

Ami Dang

I had to leave the house earlier than normal today because the store opened two hours early for some kind of sale.  And hours before that, our 3-year old climbed into bed with us, to which i've pretty much been awake ever since.  And i really stayed up a little too late last night watching episodes of "The Boys" on Prime.  So i'm just kind of floating around in a sleepy haze state this morning, my mood being accentuated by the ambient psychedelia of Baltimore artist Ami Dang's latest album "Parted Plains."  Combining sitar with electronic elements, the whole project feels part world travel and part new age meditation, a pretty perfect combination for my brain this Saturday morning.  Check out "Auberjinn" below and get the album here from Leaving Records.

Daily Jam - Dressed to Kill Main Theme

Ennio Morricone will probably always land at the very top of my favorite film score composers list, but a close second would probably be fellow Italian composer Pino Donaggio.  Donaggio's work, most notable for his collaborations with Brian DePalma, is lush and gorgeous, often haunting, and feels like it could just fill up every single celluloid frame it accompanies.  Listen to the main theme from DePalma's "Dressed to Kill" below, our Daily Jam.

Daily Jam - Tonite It Shows

I heard Mercury Rev's masterful "Deserter's Songs" for the first time when i was a deejay at KVRX, the college radio station for UT Austin.  The two semesters i spent spinning music at the ungodly hour of 5AM opened me up to so many artists that shaped and molded my tastes for the years and decades to come, and that Mercury Rev record is probably my most favorite.  It's one of those albums whose depressive beauty and desperation can life me out of my own dour state 20+ years on.  I love it.  So here's "Tonite It Shows," our Daily Jam.

Daily Jam - Safe

M83 is easily one of my most favorite artists of the millennium, their soaring, often epic synths driving straight into my heart and soul.  Here's "Safe" from 2005's "Before the Dawn Heals Us," our Daily Jam.

RIP David Berman

Late last night, i saw that David Berman, the former front man of Silver Jews, had passed away at the age of 52.  He was a stellar songwriter, both with Silver Jews and his current Purple Mountains project, and by all accounts was also a great human being.  RIP David Berman.
