Daily Jam - Firesky

I am now officially off work until next year.  So many things i could do with myself over the next two weeks, but realistically, i'm just going to eat to much, drink to much, love on my kids, and try not to let the stress of the holidays get to me too much.  But i'll be here everyday with a song.  Here's "Firesky" from The Boo Radleys, our Daily Jam.

Daily Jam - Vasoline

This song still rips.  I know.  I've done the research.  Listen to "Vasoline" by Stone Temple Pilots below, our Daily Jam.

20 Favorite Movies of 2021 that Didn't Come out in 2021

Much like last year, i spent a whole lot of time in 2021 watching a whole lot of movies.  I checked out a lot of the usual insanity i feast upon every year, but also worked on knocking off a lot of egregious blind spots in my cinematic viewing history.  I saw monsters, femme fatales, maniacs, double-crosses, and more decapitated heads than you can shake a stick at.  Here are 20 of my favorite first viewings presented in alphabetical order.  Check 'em out.

1. The Astrologer (1976)

2. Beyond the Door III (1989)

3. Cemetery of Terror (1985)

4. Crimes of Passion (1984)

5. Dark Waters (1993)

6. Django (1966)

7. Klute (1971)

8. The Last Seduction (1994)

9. The Long Good Friday (1980)

10. Massacre at Central High (1976)

11. Night Moves (1975)

12. On the Silver Globe (1988)

13. The Parallax View (1974)

14. Queen of Black Magic (1981)

15. Roadgames (1981)

16. Rolling Thunder (1977)

17. Scissors (1991)

18. The Seventh Curse (1986)

19. Strange Days (1995)

20. To Live and Die in LA (1985)

I could keep going.  I can always keep going.  Anyway, check back in two weeks for my favorite movies of 2021 that DID come out in 2021.

Garden Gate

Over the last few years, i've come across and heard so many albums that are the supposed soundtracks to lost or forgotten films, that it's becoming increasingly difficult to to ascertain the validity of it all.  I'm pretty sure it's all bullshit and that these artists just having fun making fake film scores.  I can dig that.  It is fun.  Keep doing what you do.  Like Garden Gate, and their "score" for the "Blood Mansion."  It's a spooky mix of synth and psych folk to soundtrack your studies of the occult or next seance.  Check out "Title Sequence - Natasha's Motorbike" below and get the album here from Library of The Occult.

Daily Jam - Grass

I don't nearly give these guys the attention that i used to, but i still dig on that weird old stuff.  Check out Animal Collective's "Grass" below, our Daily Jam.

20 Favorite Songs of 2021 that Didn't Come Out in 2021

I say this every year, but i discovered so much music this year that may not be new to the masses out there, but was new to me.  Awesome tracks ranging from everything from '60s Japanese pop, jazz-infused soul, library music, and Italo disco to folky soft rock, shoegaze, goth, and Brazilian psych filled my ears this year.  The sounds came from all over the world.  The songs came from every era spanning the last 60 years.  I've assembled my favorite 20 old songs of the year into something resembling a playlist below.  Check them out.

1. Romi Yamada - Tabako no Kemuri

2. Vittorio Paltrinieri - Mist and Smoke

3. Terry Callier - Dancing Girl

4. Brute Force and His Drum - Weird and Wonderful

5. Achab - White Summer Lights

6. Autumn Dust - Spend Another Day

7. Bob Mould - Black Sheets of Rain
I'm actually a little embarrassed it took me this long to check this one out.  I've been familiar with Mould's work in Husker Du and Sugar for a long time, but never really sought out his solo work.  I'm remedying that now.

8. Ozean - Scenic

9. Carola Baer - Nothing Left to Say

10. Lycia - Ionia

11. Falcons - Perdido en el Universo

12. The Electric Connection - Groovy

13. Andromeda - Andromeda

14. Claudio Natili - Il Miele del Diavolo
This one is from Lucio Fulci's film "The Devil's Honey," and is actually a cover of Franck Pourcel's "Morir de Amor," but done in a soft rock/yacht rock vein with plenty of sax...sax that does things in the movie that you may or may not be prepared for.

15. Mouth & MacNeal - Land of Milk and Honey

16. Moon Birds - Baby Moon

17. The Charlottes - Love in the Emptiness

18. Francois Bernheim - Tom

19. Mary Saxton - Is It Better to Live or Die

20. Milton Nascimento & Lo Borges - The entirety of Clube Da Esquina
Cheating here just a little bit as i couldn't force myself to pick just one song off of this 1972 masterpiece.  If this were a new album, it would be my favorite of the year.  Check the whole thing out (all 21 tracks) below.

Be back tomorrow for a whole bunch of movies i saw for the first time that didn't come out this year either.

Daily Jam - Party

Austin had a pretty vibrant punk rock scene in the '70s and '80s, encapsulated on the compilation album "Metal Moo Cow" from 1984.  Check out the weird and trippy closer "Party" from the band Meat Joy below, our Daily Jam.

Be back tomorrow for a bunch of older songs i just heard for the first time this year.
