Sven Wunder

We already got one amazing album of Eastern funk, psych, and folk from Sven Wunder this year, with Light in The Attic doing a quick reissue of last year's instantly sold out "Eastern Flowers."  And on Friday, we get another instantly sold out record with the Japanese art influenced "Wabi Sabi."  Listen to "Yūgen" below and pre-order the download here.  It also looks like some second pressings of both records are on the way from the label.  Get 'em here.

Sven Wunder

Last year saw the release of "Eastern Flowers," a floral concept album of sorts utilizing elements of European funk-jazz and psych rock from Sven Wunder.  The album plays like the soundtrack to an exotic journey moving to the East.  Listen to "Magnolia" below and download the album here from Light in the Attic.  Original pressings of the vinyl are already going for a couple hundred dollars, and Light in the Attic's upcoming reissue is already sold out, so the download will have to do for the time being.

Chinatown

Record Store Day offered up their Black Friday releases yesterday, and they went pretty easy on me this year in regards to stuff i really want.  I did make sure to snag a copy of the "Chinatown" soundtrack from Light in the Attic though.  Great film.  Great score from Jerry Goldsmith.  Listen to "Love Theme from Chinatown" below and look for the regular edition of the soundtrack soon.

The Microcosm:Visionary Music of Continental Europe 1970-1986

When Light In The Attic puts together a compilation, they really go all out.  Following the lead of 2013's excellent "I Am The Center," a compilation of American private issue New Age music from the latter half of last century, "The Microcosm" tackles music in a similar vein from Europe.  Like its predecessor, "The Microcosm" looks to reevaluate what has always been perceived as an unhip genre, but this time around with a smattering of prog, krautrock, and ambience in the mix.  Take a listen to the floating and simmering "Shiva's Dance" by Suzanne Doucet and Christian Buehner below.  It's the sound of the cosmos, a glance into the ever expanding universe.  Then pre-order the album here.

Sharon "Mhati" Chatam's Fantasy

I love the obscure and strange library music releases that get reissued by a slew of different labels.  There's so much cool, weird, and funky music to find.  Rappers and DJ's alike should be flocking to these things for samples.  Anyway, originally release in 1973, Sharon "Mhati" Chatam's "Fantasy" is getting the reissue treatment from Cinedelic, though you can pre-order it stateside from Light in the Attic.  Produced by Italian Maestro Gianfranco Reverberi, "Fantasy" features erotic cuts, groovy jazz and funk, and some takes on tracks by Elton John, Carly Simon, and more.  Listen to "I've Got an Idea" below.  It's pretty awesome.  Groove baby.

Francoise Hardy

I am a HUGE fan of Francoise Hardy, her decades long career of French (and a bunch of other languages too) pop and folk music finding its way into my regular audio habits and never failing to make me smile.  It's simple, and honest, and beautiful, and should be required listening for everybody.  So, it's pretty awesome that her first five albums are getting the remaster/reissue treatment from the damn near infallible Light in the Attic.  The vinyl editions come out in January, and you can get more info here.  In the meanwhile, listen to "Quel Mal y a-t-il a Ca," a French language cover of Patsy Cline's "When I Get Through with You," from 1965's "L'Amitie" below.

Surf Nazis Must Die

As more and more little record labels open shop, reissuing any number of film scores from the 70's, 80's, and so on, i find more and more to be excited about.  Strange Disc Records are here with their first record, the first ever release of soundtrack to the classic 1987 Troma film "Surf Nazis Must Die."  The synth-laden score was composed by Jon McCallum, and it perfectly captures the mood of a post-earthquake southern California being overrun by a gang of surfing Nazis.  Light in the Attic is distributing the record, and you can pre-order it here.  In the meanwhile, listen to "After the Quake" below.

Lewis

The nice folks over at Gorilla vs Bear were kind enough to post about Light in the Attic's upcoming reissue of the 1983 private press oddity, "L'Amour," by the artist simply known as Lewis.  I'm at a loss for how to actually describe the music.  It's kind of atmospheric, kind of poppy, kind of yacht-rocky (maybe?), kind of something.  I don't know.  You just have to listen.  It's beautiful, and "I Thought the World of You" is kind of haunting.  Get the record in June and listen to the track below.

Last House on the Left

It's pretty damn awesome that reissuing horror movie soundtracks on vinyl has become a thing lately.  And just in time for Halloween, the UK's One Way Static Records releases the soundtrack to Wes Craven's "Last House on the Left," and the 70's country-fried psych folk of actor/musician David Hess (RIP).  Stateside, grab it from Light in the Attic, and listen to "Wait for the Rain" below.

I Am the Center

Light in the Attic is one of a number of record labels to release a wide array of unearthed and forgotten gems of all kinds of musical genres in beautiful reissued packaging.  In a few weeks, they take the journey into new age, with their upcoming compilation album, "I Am the Center: Private Issue New Age Music in America 1950-1990."  Don't let the idea of new age music thwart your enjoyment of this collection though, the good folks at the label have gone crate digging to find us some of the trippiest and universe-spanning tracks imaginable.  Before there was ambient or drone, there was new age.  Pre-order here and take a listen to and excerpt of "Unicorns in Paradise" (i know, i know) by Laraaji...and just remember that Laraaji used to make music with Brian Eno.

Honey Ltd.

The always excellent Light in The Attic Records has been reissuing lost masterpieces for a long while now (see Rodriguez), and over the last year or so, the label has been putting out a series of Lee Hazlewood albums.  The fifth release of that series is a collection of jams by Honey Ltd., a 60's psych girl group the Hazlewood produced.  It's an awesome flower power revival to coast through the rest of the summer to.  Listen to "Silk N' Honey" below.
