Night School

Earlier this year, Oakland band Night School dropped their new "For Keeps" EP, a short collection of dreamy indie rock that opens with an excellent cover of "Lullaby," aka the theme from "Rosemary's Baby."  Check it out below and grab the record here from Graveface.

Precocious Neophyte

I listen to a lot of shoegaze music both old and new, and it really seems these last few years that the shoegaziest stuff is coming from artists out of Asia.  Seoul's Precocious Neophyte is one of those artists.  New album "Home in the Desert" is out next month.  Get it here from Graveface and listen to "My Electronic Idol" below.

Beachy Head

Beachy Head is the new project from Christian Savill of Slowdive and Monster Movie.  Over the last year of COVID, he wrote a bunch of new material that didn't feel like it fit with either group, so he recruited some help from members of bands like The Flaming Lips, Soft Calvary, Dreamend, and his Slowdive bandmate Rachel Goswell to record the new self-titled album.  Check out the dreamy "Destroy Us" below and pre-order the album here from Graveface.

Fawning

The cool peeps over at Graveface Records have created a new subsidiary label called NeverNotGoth which, you guessed it, focuses on goth-related records both new and reissued.  Their newest (first?) release comes from Bay Area trio Fawning, whose "Too Late" EP is delirious mix of goth and dreampop.  Check out the title track below and pre-order the record here.

Tennis System

I've been a Stan for shoegaze for a long, long time now, unashamedly so.  And i've certainly been digging on the genre's quiet and noisy resurgence over the last decade.  LA's Tennis System falls right into that, and their upcoming album "Lovesick" gives me all the beautiful, glorious waves of heavy reverb and sound that i could want.  Listen to album opener "Shelf Life" below and pre-order it here from Graveface or look for it in August.

Night School

Bay area band Night School make a lush and gorgeous mix of shoegaze, dreampop, and '60s girl pop, hazy and airy respites from an increasingly darkening world.  New album "Disappear Here" is out now on Graveface.  Get it here and listen to the dreamy, melancholy "Sweetened" below.

The Stargazer Lilies - Enter the Black Lodge

It's everywhere i look.  "Twin Peaks" is everywhere i look.  I'm not even trying.  And most recently it presents itself in the new single from The Stargazer Lilies' upcoming album "Lost."  The Lynchian named "Enter the Black Lodge" is a beautiful, ominous swirl of sound, every bit as intoxicating as its namesake.  Listen below and pre-order the new album from Graveface here.

Monster Movie

I suppose feeling reinvigorated by playing live and recording new material again, Slowdive's Christian Savill's other project, Monster Movie, have a new record out now on Graveface, their first in 7 years.  Listen to the fuzz and shoegaze of "Shouldn't Stray from the Shadows" below and snag the "Keep the Voices Distant" LP here.

Closeness

So, so many bands i would have liked to have seen this last week, but there's just no way to cram it all in and then get back home in time to read your kids a bedtime story, so you miss what you have to.  One of the artists i missed this week is the new darkwave synth project from Azure Ray's Orenda Fink and her husband Todd Fink of the band The Faint.  Listen to "End of the Maze" below and grab the duo's "Personality Therapy" EP from Graveface.

Whirr

Here's a new one from San Francisco heavy shoegaze band Whirr.  The driving and pounding "Heavy" comes from new album "Sway," due in September on Graveface Records.  It's noisy, reverby music to my ears.  Listen below.

On a side note, i did not realize that Nothing's Nick Bassett was the main man behind Whirr.  That explains a lot.

Whirr

Bay area band Whirr love their swirling guitar textures, their cacophonous drum rhythms, their ear splitting decibels.  A beautiful and perfect combination of garage rock and shoegaze, play this shit loud.  The band's new "Around" EP is out now on Graveface Records.  Listen to "Swoon" below.
