Automatic

LA's quirky electro-synth-punk trio Automatic are back with new album "Is It Now?" that just dropped a few days ago.  Check out the very cool and weird "Mercury" below and snag the LP here from Stones Throw.

Sofie Royer

Here's a new pop banger from Austria based artist Sofie Royer.  "AUTO" is the perfect kind of jam to end the summer to, feet tapping, hips swinging.  Check it out below and download it here from Stones Throw.

Sofie Royer

Vienna based pop artist Sofie Royer put out one of my favorite songs of 2023 with the summery dreampop of "Mio."  And she's back with some new synth pop in the form of "I Forget (I'm so Young)."  Check the track out below and download it here from Stones Throw.

Sofie Royer

Here's some wonderful new pop music from Austrian artist Sofie Royer.  "Mio" starts with some melancholy indie folk vibes before morphing into a wistful and hazy synth pop jam.  The summer vibes are strong.  Check out the video below and download it here from Stones Throw.

Chrome Canyon

It's been almost a decade since we last got an album from Chrome Canyon.  And now the artist is back with "Director" and 10 more cuts of analog synthesizer goodness.  Check out the whimsical and slightly ominous opening track "Broken Theme" below and download the whole thing here from Stones Throw.

Quakers Featuring Sampa The Great

I was unaware that we were getting a new Quakers album this year, much less that it's dropping next week.  That's wonderful news as any new music from Geoff Barrow should be considered, and i hope just the first of a string of wonderful news we get today.  Anyway, check out the Sampa The Great assisted "Approach With Caution" below and order the record here from Stones Throw.

Sudan Archives

Of all of the artists that i've missed at SXSW for whatever reason, missing out on Sudan Archives at SXSW 2018 ranks up there with the ones i regret the most.  The LA artist makes a kind of soulful, experimental, neo-classical style of R&B.  It's really quite something.  And now she's got a full-length record heading our way in November on Stones Throw.  Check out "Confessions" below and pre-order the "Athena" LP here.

Sudan Archives - Nont For Sale

I'm still kicking myself for not catching LA artist Sudan Archives when she was here for SXSW.  And her new single "Nont For You" just piles on the regret.  A smoky, airy R&B jam full of dreamy vocals, slinky beats, and plucked violin strings that appear out of the ether.  This is thick sonic haze at its finest, completely and utterly intoxicating.  And holy shit, that is some amazing single cover art.  Listen to the song below, get it here, and be sure to grab the upcoming "Sink" EP from Stones Throw in May.

Sudan Archives

I really would like to catch the enigmatic Sudan Archives at some point this week, but my schedule and the demands of children who expect to be picked up from school/day care are making it very difficult to do so.  And man, that's a goddamn tragedy, because the LA based violinist/vocalist makes a groovy and enchanting mix of classical and experimental electronica infused with R&B and West African rhythms.  Listen to the haunting and hypnotic "Water" below, get it here from Stones Throw, and cross you fingers for a full length sometime in the near future.

Washed Out - Hard to Say Goodbye

Here's another new track from Washed Out's upcoming new album "Mister Mellow."  "Hard to Say Goodbye" feels like a call back to the artist's earlier work from almost a decade ago, feeling a bit like an old school "chill wave" (a moniker i still despise as it was coined by a smarmy, annoying blogger who isn't me) jam.  Listen below and get the album (with accompanying videos) at the end of the month from Stones Throw.

Washed Out - Get Lost

Just in time for the holiday weekend (which i'm working on), and the impending summer, comes a new poolside boogie from Washed Out.  "Get Lost" sounds like the kind of endless dance jam that that will shake its way to the beach and back, a layer of cool haze over this (probably) terrifying summer.  Watch the trippy video below and get the track from Stones Throw.

Mild High Club

Though i am no fan of the punny band name, LA's Mild High Club craft wonderfully woozy, lo-fi pysch pop reminiscent of acts like Ariel Pink or Mac DeMarco.  Listen to "Windowpane" below and get the 7" from Stones Throw, and be on the lookout for a full length LP later this Spring.

Freddie Gibbs and Madlib

I'm getting to the dance a couple of months late on this one, but after two plus years in the making, i'm going to forgive myself for letting it slip.  Rapper Freddie Gibbs and producer extraordinaire Madlib, after some stellar EP's, finally released a proper full-length on Stones Throw.  And they work with everybody.  Take a listen to "Robes" featuring Odd Future's Earl Sweatshirt and Domo Genesis below.  It kind of makes me want to smoke weed.

Steve Arrington & Dam-Funk

Soul and funk lifer Steve Arrington (he was in the band Slave) has been out of the limelight for about a quarter of a century now, but the man is back, pairing with the likes of modern funky beat-maker Dam-Funk for a new LP called "Higher."  This is booty-shaking astral plane sexy time music for terrestrials and extra-terrestrials alike.  Take a listen to "I Be Trippin" below and get the album next month from Stones Throw.

Duppy Gun

Sun Araw's Cameron Stallones and M. Geddes Gengras began making music together last year with Jamaican reggae band The Congos.  The two have continued making music together with a series of one-off singles performed with an array of other Jamaican artists.  They have donned themselves Duppy Gun, and their latest single "What Would You Say About Me?" is a mix of R&B, dancehall music, and Jamaican vibes.  The track features Fiyah Flames on vocals.  Get it from Stones Throw and listen below.

Anika covers Chromatics

British/German chanteuse Anika continues forward on the New-York-post-punk-no-wave-as-fronted-by-Nico vibes she began on her self-titled 2011 album.  April's self-titled EP features continued production from Portishead and Beak> alum Geoff Barrow and a funky little cover of Chromatics' "In The City."  Listen below and keep an eye out for the record from Stones Throw.
