Every other week, I find myself in a rut, trying to write about music I love, trying to be profound, or insightful, or at the very least entertaining, and sometimes I just can’t. The world is on fire. It’s burning and smoldering all around us. And all of my hope for the future grows dimmer and dimmer as the smoke gets thicker and more noxious by the day.
So, I’m not going to try today.
Instead, I’m just going to check out for a little while. I’m going to float away on a dream. I’m going to melt away with the ice. I’m going to close my eyes and listen to “Storm Maker” from Austin’s dark and gothy synth pop band Troller’s 2016 album Graphic. Maybe things can just cease to be for a little while. At the very least it can slow down.
It's been 7 years since we last got a record from Austin darkwave band Troller. I remember hearing a few years ago that they had signed to Relapse and have been patiently waiting for this one. Austin based experimental synth band Thousand Foot Whale Claw, a collective featuring members of S U R V I V E, Troller, Single Lash, and Future Museums, have a new album heading our way in June on Holodeck Records. When you buy as many records online as i do, you end up, inadvertently or not, on a lot of different record label mailing lists. And sure, they can clutter up my inbox, but i also got a lot of great announcements. In this case, it's that Austin darkwave trio Troller have a new record out in April on Holodeck. Hazaa! I love this band, and i've been jonesing for new tunes from them for a number of years now. Take a listen to and watch the video for "Not Here" below and pre-order the "Graphic" LP here.
Austin record label Monofonus Press have lone been purveyors of awesome local music and art, and next week, they have a compilation album of Austin artists called, fittingly enough, "We Jam By Condos" coming out to please our earholes. Featuring an assortment of bands and styles, like Spray Paint's hard-edged post-punk and SURVIVE's analog synthesizer soundscapes, it's looking to be a comp to remember. In the evening, we caught a little bit of a different show that was supposed to include a performance from Jandek, but he cancelled last minute, which made me a sad panda. The synth-goth of Troller made up for it though.
