Captain Murphy

Last night i was lucky enough to get out an see the new kung fu movie "The Furious."  To put it bluntly, it ruled.  And there's some truly excellent fight choreography throughout.  Anyhoo, the closing credits features a new track from Flying Lotus hip-hop alter-ego Captain Murphy.  Check out "Mudhole," featuring additional production from Little Snake, below and download it here from Brainfeeder.

Here's a wonderful new song from UK duo Kit Sebastian. "Enkaz" serves as farewell and eulogy to band member Merve Erdem's grandfather who passed away last year. Jaga Jazzist

Norwegian electronic band Jaga Jazzist released their latest effort, "Pyramid," on Friday, and it's a head-ful.  The record combines elements of electronica with prog rock, jazz, kosmische psychedelia, and krautrock, like it should be soundtracking some video game that sucks you into its world.  Listen to the world creating "Spiral Era" below and download the album here from Brainfeeder.

Kamasi Washington

Full disclosure: i am not a jazz aficionado.  When it really comes down to it, i'm a total novice with the genre, but that doesn't mean that i don't enjoy it, or that i'm not drawn to it.  I just can't wax all knowledgeable or philosophical on the subject.  But hey, i was born in New Orleans.  This shit should be in my blood right?  Enter Kamasi Washington, and his brain-melting, 3-hour opus, appropriately called "The Epic" on Flying Lotus's Brainfeeder label.  The three CD set feels like 60 or 70 years of influence boiled down into one expansive saga.  There are nods to Coltrane, homages to Miles, and so on.  The whole affair feels grand and timeless...and dare i say hip even.  I'm not expecting the kids to start digging on old jazz records any time soon, but it's nice to know that it never completely went away, that its influence is still there, albeit buried in the underground.  Listen to "Miss Understanding" below and order the album here.

Ras G and The Afrikan Space Program

Honestly, i don't know the first thing about LA producer Ras G, or his Afrikan Space Program, but considering new album "Back on the Planet" is on Brainfeeder (Flying Lotus's record label), and the space-funk album art, and the fact that trippy and tribal track "All Is Well..." would sound awesome with MF Doom on top of it, i'm calling it a winner.  Listen to that jam below and look for the album in August.
