I have always felt that Father John Misty seems like one of the most insufferable artists making music today.  That being said, i think he's also one hell of a songwriter, so here we are.  New album "Mahashmashana" just came out a few days ago.  Get it here from Sub Pop and listen to the excellent "I Guess Time Just Makes Fools of Us All" below.

And Father John Misty's got new music heading our way in the spring.  As per usual, as much as i'd like to dislike the music because i don't particularly care for the man, i can't help but love it.  Check out the cool video for "Funny Girl" below and pre-order the upcoming "Chloe and the Next 20th Century" LP here from Sub Pop.  If you spend $78, you get the vinyl, a book, a poster, and two additional 7" records featuring covers from Lana Del Rey and Jack Cruz (the capuchin monkey from that David Lynch short film).  I'm not gonna lie, that Jack Cruz 7" might just make it worth it.

Father John Misty continues to make fantastic singer/songwriter pop music, simultaneously calling back to decades of material that came before while pushing ever forward.  The upcoming "God's Favorite Customer" LP, due in June on Sub Pop, feels a little scaled back from last year's epic, and arguably overstuffed, "Pure Comedy," but just as vital.  Listen to "Just Dumb Enough to Try" below and pre-order here.

Admittedly, if i was forced to spend any significant amount of time alone with him, i would probably punch Father John Misty in the face repeatedly, but damn if i'm not utterly entranced by his music.  New single "Mr. Tillman," kind of a surprising release considering how epic last year's "Pure Comedy" was, is kind of a combo of Americana, soft rock, 60's sunshine rock, and folk, sliding in right alongside the artist's other stellar output.  Maybe there's a new album already on the way.  Maybe not.  Anyway, listen below.

On a collaborative pairing i never would have even dreamed of, artist and troublemaker Father John Misty gets the remix treatment from dark and droney producer The Haxan Cloak, with the latter turning the former's treatise on a post-apocalyptic world, the wonderfully titled "Things It Would Have Been Helpful to Know Before the Revolution," into something even darker.  And it works like gangbusters.  Watch Matthew Daniel Siskin's nightmarish video for the remix below, a dread inducing collage of stock footage, current events, revelry, and garbage.

People seem to be pretty torn on Father John Misty, the artist's stage act and trolling tendency often overshadowing his take on Americana pop.  And that's a shame, because while i too am irritated by trolls, the music is stellar.  New album "Pure Comedy" is due in April on Sub Pop.  Watch the very political video for the piano and horn driven title track below.

Father John Misty released a new jam today, the 70's AM, yacht-rock inspired "Real Love Baby."  It's a chugging little number, maybe irony free or maybe not, but it's a nice jam for a rainy Thursday morning here in Austin.  Listen below.

Father John Misty (otherwise known as Josh Tillman) has been getting a lot of press lately (and rightfully so) for his excellent new album "I Love You Honeybear."  A few days ago, the man put down an excellent solo cover of Nirvana's "Heart Shaped Box" for Sirius XMU.  Listen below.

I don't know why, but for some reason or another, i always seem to write off Father John Misty, and Fleet Foxes before him, thinking it's just some by-the-numbers, easy-listening indie rock...until i actually sit down and listen, and am consistently blown away by how beautiful and heartfelt the music really is.  Such is the case with the handful of songs i've heard from the forthcoming "I Love You, Honeybear" LP due next month on Sub Pop.  Take a listen to the wonderful "Chateau Lobby #4 (in C for Two Virgins)" below and try your best not to have it rattling around in your head all day long.  It feels like the culmination of all the records our parents listened to, the ones that carved themselves onto our collective psyches and pushed us forth into the world.

Hal Ashby was a brilliant filmmaker from the 60's and 70's, a huge part of the cinematic counterculture of the time.  Filmmaker Amy Scott has a documentary about the director coming out soon called "Once I Was: The Hal Ashby Story," and one Father John Misty appears on the soundtrack covering Cat Stevens' "Trouble," which was originally used in the 1971 film "Harold and Maude."  It's good stuff.  You should listen below, courtesy of My Old Kentucky Blog.

Josh Tillman - The History of Caves

So, i ventured out to Waterloo Records after work today to check out the bevy of Record Store Day Black Friday releases, most notably snagging myself a copy of the live Nick Cave LP, and most notably missing The Flaming Lips' Stone Roses cover album (damn you Black Friday shoppers!).  I also grabbed Josh Tillman's (Fleet Foxes/Father John Misty) score for the film "The History of Caves."  It's folky, psychy, and very relaxing music.  Get if from Sub Pop (if possible) and listen to "Car Chase Theme" below.
