Black Lips

Elias Rønnenfelt

Iceage front man Elias Rønnenfelt just dropped his debut solo single with "Like Lovers Do."  The track incorporates elements of indie rock, folk, and country to create a toe-tapping, finger-snapping little ditty.  Iceage has flirted with alt-county and cowpunk in the past, but this new track from their lead singer goes all in.  Check it out below and download it here from Escho.

Dead Horses

Italian band Dead Horses released one of my favorite albums of 2017 with their debut "Ballad for Losers," their particular brand of lo-fi cowpunk scratching that particular itch just right.  And i hadn't heard from them since.  I was wondering if they were even still around, and then i got the news this morning of their upcoming sophomore effort "Sunny Days."  New tune "Macabro" keeps their cowpunk intact but adds in some extra Spaghetti Western moods for good measure.  Check it out below and pre-order the record here from Maple Death Records.

Bambara

Brooklyn band Bambara are back in February with a new record of rowdy, chugging, rock-a-billy-tinged post punk.  Cow-punkers unite!  Check out the southern gothic vibes of "Mythic Love" below and pre-order "Love on my Mind" here from Wharf Cat.

Viagra Boys Cover John Prine

I feel like i've been seeing Swedish punk act Viagra Boys all over the place lately, but i think it's just that i've got a couple of friends who are really into them and posting links to their new tracks all over social media.  With good reason though, because they're killer.  The band's new album "Welfare Jazz" is due next month.  Order it here and check out their Amy Taylor (of Amyl and The Sniffers fame) assisted cover of John Prine's "In Spite of Ourselves" below.

Black Lips

Long running Georgia punk and garage rock band Black Lips are back with a new album next week, the wonderfully titled "Sing in a World that's Falling Apart."  The new record seems to be taking a definitive country and western kind of vibe, and ladies and gentlemen, i am here for it.  Watch the video for new single "Rumbler" below, pre-order the record here from Fire Records, and join us all in the honky tonk.

Jenny Don't & The Spurs

I spent the weekend in Spokane, Washington with some old friends, drank a ton of great beer, and managed to snag a couple records from local shop/label Resurrection Records.  One of particular note was the wonderful "What Can I Do b/w Still As The Night" 7" from Jenny Don't & The Spurs, two audio slices of cowpunk alt-country featuring members of The Wipers and Dead Moon.  Cool stuff, and the guy running the shop/label used to live in Austin.  Check out "What Can I Do" below and get the record here.

Priests

April brings us new music from DC punk band Priests, and if the title track of the upcoming "The Seduction of Kansas" is any indication, these guys and girls are growing in all kinds of different directions.  Notes of cowpunk and post punk abound on the new single, all tied together with an avant garde groove.  More like this please.  Listen below and be on the lookout for a pre-order soon from Sister Polygon Records.

Bambara

Brooklyn 3-piece Bambara make a moody, brooding kind of psychobilly post punk, all dark and echoed guitar licks and menacing vocals beckoning you into the desert at night.  The "Shadow on Everything" LP is out now (get it here), but go ahead and get hooked on the album opening "Dark Circles" below.

A. Savage

Parquet Courts member A. Savage has a solo album due in October on Dull Tools.  Listen to the cowpunk leaning "Winter in the South" below and pre-order the "Thawing Dawn" LP here.

Tim Darcy

Tim Darcy from post punk band Ought released a solo album last month via Jagjaguwar.  Think post punk with a cowpunk edge with occasional flurries of rock 'n roll.  I'm not sure why, but i find this way more enjoyable than his work with his band.  Anyway, watch the video for "Tall Glass of Water" below and get the "Saturday Night" LP here.

Dead Horses

It's always a wonderful experience to stumble upon a record label that seems to be speaking your language with every single release, regardless of genre or mood.  And the folks over at Italian label Maple Death are just killing it.  The latest release is the debut album from Italian cowpunk trio Dead Horses, the side project of members of weirdo noise makers For Food.  Western themed art from Italy always seems to be right up my alley (read: Spaghetti Westerns), and "Ballad for Losers" is no different.  Listen to the hopping, honky tonk punk of "Morning Hell" below and grab the cassette here.

Iceage - Forever

A few weeks ago, we heard the newest jam from Danish post-punks Iceage, "The Lord's Favorite."  On it, the band tweaked their often bleak material with some tinges of cowpunk, breathing whole new life into the band's formula.  It just worked.  And now we have another new tune, "Forever," from the forthcoming new album "Plowing into the Field of Love," and it mixes in some American Gothic undertones with all the country-post-punk and oblivion.  It sounds kind of like something Nick Cave might have dabbled in 20 or 30 years ago, and it's awesome.  Look for the album in October from Matador, and watch the video for "Forever" below.

New music from Iceage

Here's a new jam from Denmark hooligans Iceage.  "The Lord's Favorite" finds the band trading in their normally nihilistic brand of post-punk dread for some seemingly stomping cow-punk vibes...and it totally works.  Watch the video below, and maybe a new record on the horizon.

Found Vinyl: Blood on The Saddle

Sub-genres are always an interesting beast, a fusion of different styles and sounds pulled together to make something unique.  While hipper than alt-country, cowpunk never really gets its due.  LA band Blood on The Saddle released their debut self-titled LP in 1984 on New Alliance Records, and it's a pretty awesome album.  Take a listen to "Banks of the Ohio."



An old school country music vibe, but mixed with jangly garage rock guitars.  A lot of these sounds would be found later on albums by an array of artists from Butthole Surfers to Southern Culture on the Skids to Hank Williams III.  Listen to the raucous "Blood on the Saddle."



Lastly, here's some footage of the band playing "Do You Wanna Dance?"  The sound's a little rough, but this song displays more of singer Annette Zilinskas' vocals, and that guitar tone just slams through as well.


Now, let's get that cowpunk revival moving.
